WA 93 (12/2003): Readers seeking a liqueur of black currants in a Cabernet-based wine should check out the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Dr. Crane Vineyard (15.2% alcohol). A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Merlot, it boasts fabulous texture as well as richness. Dense and full-bodied, it will age effortlessly for 15+ years. IWC 90 (6/2004): includes 10% cabernet franc and 4% merlot) Good full ruby. Aromas of cassis, violet, lead pencil, bitter chocolate and mint. Very dense and concentrated, with superripe but fresh flavors of violet and chocolate. Finishes with full but nicely integrated tannins. This has turned out well, but the 2002 will be even stronger. |

WA 93 (12/2003): The classic 2001 Kenefick Ranch is a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, 6% Merlot, and 6% Petit Verdot. This 419-case offering will undoubtedly disappear as quickly as it is released. However, patience will be required as it needs 4-5 years of cellaring. High in tannin and dense, with oodles of sweet black currant fruit intermixed with tobacco leaf, licorice, and spice box, it is an outrageous Bordeaux on steroids that should drink well between 2008-2020. IWC 90+ (6/2004): Bright, full ruby. Crushed blueberry, blackcurrant, violet and licorice on the nose. Rich, lush and dense but dry, with strong, wound-up flavors of blackberry liqueur, licorice and tobacco. Finishes with big, youthfully clenched tannins that call for a couple years of patience. A somewhat rustic, muscular wine with a solid structure for evolution in bottle. |
