IWC 90 (6/2013): Inky ruby. Ripe cherry and dark berries on the perfumed nose and in the mouth. Plush and open-knit, with very good back-end power and sneaky smoke and tobacco nuances. Closes sweet and long, with smooth tannins making a late appearance. WA 89 (12/2011): The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon emerges from the glass with expressive dark fruit, mint, flowers and tobacco. It shows good balance in a style meant to be enjoyed on the young side. The fleshiness of the fruit flows effortless toward the long, creamy finish. In 2009 the blend includes 4% Merlot. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016. WS 88 (12/2012): An extracted tannic style with chewy berry, cedar and mineral notes, this is distinctive and pleasurable, more complex and interesting on the finish. Quite tannic finish. Best from 2013 through 2022. 800 cases made. |

WA 89 (8/2002): The 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Cornerstone Vineyard is interesting and complete, with excellent fruit, depth, and texture. Aromas of cedar wood, spice box, leather, and black currants are offered in a medium-bodied, nicely concentrated, rich, heady style. This fine effort has good purity as well as some moderate tannin to shed. Anticipated maturity: now-2012. WS 87 (4/2003): An herbal style, with sage, and earthy flavors commingling with cedary currant and tobacco flavors. Fans of Bordeaux-style blends will find this more appealing than those seeking richer Cabernet fruit. Drink now through 2007. 995 cases made. |

Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon |

WA 91 (12/2011): The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain reveals a dark flavor profile and quite a bit more muscle than the straight Napa Valley bottling. Smoke, tar, menthol, new leather and black fruit are some of the many nuances that emerge from this beautiful, powerful mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. The inclusion of 5% Merlot in the blend works quite nicely. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019. IWC 91 (6/2013): (includes 5% merlot): Glass-staining ruby. Sexy oak-spiced aromas of dark berry compote, sassafras and vanilla, with a smoky overtone. Stains the palate with sweet black and blue fruit flavors that pick up an exotic floral pastille quality on the back half. Finishes sweet, smoky and long, with slow-building tannins and a kick of peppery spices and minerals. WS 83 (12/2012): This dense, chewy style is a bit muddled, with loamy earth, dried berry, leather and stale tobacco flavors. Lacks the freshness and vibrance a young wine should offer. Drink now through 2020. 400 cases made. |
