The Vine (3/1998): Good colour. Plump, slightly spicy. Not quite the brilliance of the 60 Ouvrées. Not quite the grip. But an ample wine with very good depth. Fine fruit again. Fine quality. From 2003. BH 86 (3/2003): Already showing signs of rapid maturation and while this is pretty enough, it lacks real grip and cocentration. Approachable now though it will certainly hold at this level and may soften further. Drink now. |

BH 91 (4/2007): A ripe black raspberry, cassis and floral nose, particularly violets, introduces rich, fresh and sweet flavors that possess utterly beguiling texture on the precise, pure, linear and dusty finish. I very much like the transparency and sense of overall harmony of expression here. Outstanding! Drink: 2012+. IWC 89-91 (4/2007): Red-ruby. Dark cherry, minerals and licorice on the nose, complemented by a smoky nuance. Sweet, spicy and rather primary, in the style of the year. Finishes with firm tannins and lingering spice. |

BH 90 (4/2008): A naturally spicy, fresh and elegant nose of dark pinot fruit and violets merges into exceptionally pure medium-bodied flavors that possess first rate detail on the clean and harmonious finish. This is a wine of seamless harmony, indeed this is Zen-like in its delivery. Drink: 2012+. WA 89 (12/2009): Landanger's 2006 Volnay Caillerets smells of fresh cherry, wood smoke, brown spices, lemon zest, and high-toned maraschino; comes to the palate invigoratingly tart, spicy, and chalky; and finishes with emphatic fruit and spice though also a certain severity of tannin. It should remain fresh for the better part of a decade, but whether its tannins will permit it to unbutton and seduce I am less sure. And if it's intriguing complexity one craves, far better this vintage to buy the version of Caillerets from Pousse d'Or's monopole Clos des 60 Ouvrees. IWC 88 (4/2009): Good medium red. Dark cherry and flowers on the nose, plus a loamy note. Offers more volume than the Santenay but with a weightless impression to the slightly medicinal flavors of black cherry, licorice and menthol. A round, firmly structured 2006 that finishes classically dry. |

WA 94 (5/2011): The 2009 Volnay En Caillerets bursts from the glass with a huge, explosive bouquet. Blackberries, blueberries, hard candy and spices are just a few of the notes that emerge from this layered, intense Burgundy. There is plenty of inner tension here, in fact the Caillerets appears to be holding back a lot of its potential. It is a dazzling wine though, and one built for the long haul. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2049. BH 92 (5/2011): A discreet touch of wood frames notably elegant aromas of plum, violets and stone where the latter element also suffuses the rich, fleshy and delicious middle weight flavors that possess an abundance of dry extract that buffers the moderately firm tannins on the impressively persistent finish. This should be lovely in time. Drink 2017+. Outstanding! IWC 91 (4/2012): Bright fresh ruby. Aromas of cassis, mint and game, along with a liqueur-like note of black cherry. Sweet and concentrated, round and full. Wonderfully ripe without being roasted, with an element of sweetness giving this wine considerable early appeal. Substantial sweet tannins are buried under the wine's fruit today on the long finish. |
