WA 90 (12/1997): I had a chance to do a mini-vertical of the Etude Cabernet Sauvignons, and all of them performed extremely well. Most of them appeared to need additional cellaring, and each of them suggested to me that they have another two decades of life. I rated the 1990, 90 (outstanding, but dwarfed by more recent efforts). As insiders know, these wines are the handcrafted products of one of California's most influential and successful winemakers/consultants, Tony Soter. Soter has a superb list of clients, including Araujo Estate, Dalla Valle, and Viader. His own wines are also brilliant, and in 1997, his portfolio will include a Pinot Noir produced from his first vineyard - in Oregon's Willamette Valley. |

WS 94 (12/2002): Enormously complex, deep, dark, rich and polished, with layers of concentrated black cherry, blackberry, currant and anise. Framed by pretty toasty oak, the fruit holds a firm upper hand, turning richly tannic on the finish. Best from 2004 through 2015. 1,700 cases made. IWC 93 (6/2002): (bottled in January of this year) Good full ruby. Superripe aromas of currant, mocha, brown spices and smoky oak. Lush and sweet, but almost magically light on its feet. Lively and intense, with rich flavors of currant and minerals. Finishes very long, with wonderfully fine tannins. This is more refined than 99% of California's cabernets, without any loss of flavor intensity or personality. WA 93 (12/2003): From a tannic vintage for Napa Cabernet, Etude’s 1999 is a stunning success. A dense ruby/purple color is followed by a restrained but noble bouquet of creme de cassis, vanilla, and lead pencil. This medium to full-bodied effort is elegant and concentrated with well-balanced tannin as well as extract. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2015. |

IWC 92+ (6/2003): bottled a week prior to my visit) Good saturated ruby-red. Crystallized berries, black cherry, chocolate and minerals on the nose. Sweet on entry, then surprisingly open in the middle considering the recent bottling, with notes of raspberry, currant, chocolate and mocha, all lifted by new oak. Chewy, ripe and strong; this builds and broadens from entry to back end. Tannins are strong but smooth. A superb effort for the year. According to Soter, this wine has an impressive 32 grams per liter of dry extract, which would go a long way toward explaining its density of texture. WS 91 (11/2003): Elegant yet richly flavored, built around a core of tasty plum and black cherry that fills out nicely on the palate, offering depth, richness, focus and length. Drink now through 2010. 2,500 cases made. |

IWC 92 (6/2006): (this was recently released after having been held at the winery in bottle for a year) Full deep red. Complex, smoky aromas of brambly raspberry and mocha. Tangy, minerally and light on its feet, with ripe acids contributing to the impression of inner-mouth perfume. A slightly carnal quality adds complexity to the red fruit flavors. Finishes with very good length. Offers a compelling combination of sweet fruit and spine. I slightly underestimated this wine when I tasted it last March just prior to bottling. BH 90 (10/2006): A high-toned and very pinot nose offers spice and red fruit aromas that combine with round, forward and supple middle weight flavors that are textured, stylish and dusty, all wrapped in a tangy and youthfully punchy finish. This is built to age and has the balance to do it and the only nit is a touch of finishing warmth. Drink 2009+. Outstanding! WS 82 (10/2006): Dry and devoid of ripe fruit, it crosses the line from earthiness into barnyard. This was the better of two bottles. Drink now through 2010. 924 cases made. |

| BH 89 (10/2009): A very ripe nose features notes of spiced plum, violets and black raspberry that are in keeping with the extremely rich, plump and rounded medium-full flavors that possess plenty of extract on the sappy and reasonably long finish. This is a big and concentrated wine and while it's by no means heavy, I wouldn't describe it as an elegant example either, which is to say that it will most please those who enjoy a full-on but not overly alcoholic style. Drink 2013+. |

WS 92 (5/2006): Supple and harmonious, with richness joined by a classy elegance, offering a range of understated currant, black cherry and plummy Cabernet fruit. The tannins are soft and fleshy, with a nice push of fruit complexity on the finish. Drink now through 2012. 285 cases made. WA 90 + (12/2005): The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford possesses a structured, dusty earthiness along with black currants, a hint of raspberry and sweet cherry, attractive, spicy wood, and moderate tannin. It seems much less evolved than the St. Helena cuvee. |
