IWC 90 (6/2011): (13.9% alcohol): Good deep, full gold. Candied aromas of quince, orange and honey. Honey and butterscotch flavors suggest a bit of botrytis, but a firm spine of acidity keeps the wine from cloying. This rounded out nicely with time in the glass. In fact, says winemaker/proprietor Thomas Brown, the pH of 3.35 is on the high side for this wine, which is made with natural yeasts and no lees stirring.

WA 91 (4/2013): Black cherries, plums, spices and new leather all come to life in the 2011 Pinot Noir Occidental Ridge Vineyard. Fresh, vibrant and beautifully delineated, the 2011 impresses for its nuance. The 2011 is a bit lighter than most recent vintages, but at the same time, the wine retains a buoyancy and vibrancy that is hugely appealing. Saline notes support the bright finish. This is a gorgeous showing. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2021.

WA 93 (12/2011): The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Roberto Corona Vineyard, from a site on the Oakville bench, is the richest of these 2009 Cabernets from Rivers-Marie. It bursts from the glass with jammy, opulent fruit and a big, full-bodied personality. Blue and black fruit, mint, licorice and sweet spices wrap around the finish. The 100% new oak comes through here. I am not sure this wine needs all the oak and makeup. There is plenty of pedigree already. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2021.

IWC 91+ (6/2011): (from vines planted in 1977): Deep red. Pungent, complex aromas of cherry, crushed raspberry, black tea and orange zest. Dense and sappy, with old-viney creaminess of texture leavened by edgy acidity. The lively red fruit, floral and spice flavors are further lifted by a repeating note of orange zest on the back end. Offers very good cut but will need bottle aging to unwind. Winemaker Thomas Brown told me that light precipitation at the beginning of October perked up the fruit in this dry-farmed vineyard, but that he brought in the grapes on October 11, just before the heavier rains. This might have been even better for a few more days of hang time, but I would not be at all surprised if it merited a higher score several years from now.

92 (2/2012): The 2010 Pinot Noir Summa Vineyard is the first wine Brown made with whole clusters, 10% in this vintage. Plums, cherries, mint, tobacco and incense waft from the glass from this attractive, mid-weight Pinot. A finessed, supple finish leaves a lasting impression. It will be interesting to watch this wine evolve, and specifically to see if the use of whole clusters is an experiment or if it becomes a staple of the approach here. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2020.
