WA 90 (6/1995): With a finished PH of 3.41 (still too low for any top-notch Cabernet Sauvignon), this wine's rich fruit is able to fight its way through the wall of tartness. The healthy, medium to dark ruby/purple color is followed by an elegant yet restrained nose of spice, tobacco, and red currants. The wine is medium to full-bodied, with excellent richness, good spice, and a clean, compact, long, rich finish. At its finest, this is an elegant, classic, sculptured Cabernet Sauvignon that can be drunk now or over the next 10-15 years. WS 87 (12/2005): Darkly colored, with complex cedar, currant, tar and sage scents, this wine is aging very well, offering a mix of still youthful Cabernet flavors with hints of maturity and secondary flavors of sour cherry and dill. Supple; the tannins are well-integrated and the finish holds a tight focus.--1985 California Cabernet retrospective. Drink now through 2009. 1,800 cases made. |

WA 94 (6/1995): Note: This wine will be released in Fall, 1995 This knock-out Cabernet Sauvignon boasts a youthful purple color, a sweet, blackcurrant, vanilla, and earthy-scented nose, great ripeness and sweetness of fruit, high flavor extraction, well-integrated acidity and tannin, and a layered, multi-dimensional, complete feel in the mouth with no hard edges or toughness. There is splendid balance and concentration. The 3.63 PH gives the wine a juicy, succulent, up-front feel, and a chewy, expansive, layered texture. This wine requires 4-5 years of cellaring, with the potential of 30+ years of aging. A terrific 1991! WS 93 (12/2002): Rich and plush, deeply concentrated, with complex currant, coffee and cedar, and a twinge of stalky bell pepper and green bean. Finishes with tobacco notes and firm tannins. Turns herbal, but has a long way to go.--'81/?91 California Cabernet retrospective. Drink now through 2007. |

| WA 95 (12/1996): At the top of this estate's qualitative hierarchy are their Cabernet Sauvignons. I extolled the virtues of the 1992 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select prior to its release, and now that it is in the marketplace, it is as fabulous as I had hoped. It possesses an opaque dark purple color, and a profoundly complex nose of minerals, ripe cassis fruit, cedar, chocolate, and subtle herbs. Full-bodied yet silky, with layers of concentrated, highly extracted fruit, this wine is exceptionally well-balanced, beautifully pure, and already delicious. It is still an infant in terms of development, but I would not fault anybody for wanting to drink it. Anticipated maturity: now-2012. |

| WA 94 (12/1996): At the top of this estate's qualitative hierarchy are their Cabernet Sauvignons. The 1993 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select is an outstanding wine that is close in quality to the 1992 and 1991. The 1993 boasts an opaque purple color, as well as a sweet, smoky nose of licorice, blackcurrants, minerals, and vanillin. Huge, rich, and full-bodied, with fabulous concentration and extract, but harder tannin than the 1992 or 1994, this is a large-scaled, well-balanced, powerful Cabernet Sauvignon to drink between 2000-2020. Readers may remember my previous lavish reviews of the Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignons. These wines have always been high class, but the quality level since 1991 has pushed Shafer's Hillside Select into an elite grouping of two dozen or so California Cabernet producers. There are 2,000-2,400 cases made of these rich, ageworthy Cabernets. |

| WA 99 (1/2000): The 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select possesses lots of fatness in the mid-palate. There is plenty of tannin in this full-bodied, rich effort. It is remarkable how the finest California Cabernets combine extraordinary power and richness with balance and elegance. A stupendous wine, it is worth a special effort to obtain. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2030. |

| WA 98 (12/2000): Since 1991, Shafer's Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon has unquestionably been one of the top dozen or so California Cabernets. Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and aged 32 months in 100% French oak casks (the majority Taransaud), it possesses the elegance and finesse one would expect from the Stag's Leap area, but also monumental power, richness, and intensity. |

| WA 94 (12/2012): Mocha, tar, spices and tobacco all flow from the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five. A rich, intense wine, the 2010 impresses for its depth and sheer power. This is far from an easygoing Cabernet. I imagine the 2010 might still be going strong at age 20. The cold, late season yielded an utterly magnificent Cabernet that will challenge the top labels of many other properties. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025. |
