WS 95 (7/1997): This Turley Zin is characteristically intense and deeply concentrated, showing off complex cherry, berry and plum flavors, with distinct pepperlike and herbaceous accents, and a long, lingering aftertaste. Bravo. 700 cases made.
WA 94 (6/1997): The 1995 Zinfandel Black-Sears Vineyard, which has a northeasterly orientation on Howell Mountain, weighs in at 16.1% alcohol. Harvested on November 15 (because of the vineyard's cool climate elevation of 2400 feet), this is a fabulously rich, full-bodied, powerful Zinfandel. The deep saturated purple color and gorgeous, fragrant nose of black-raspberries, pepper, and spice are suggestive of a top vintage of Pomerol from Bordeaux's right bank. This wine is enormously rich, full-bodied, super-concentrated, with a creamy texture, and layers of glycerin-imbued, rich fruit. Its seductive power makes it one of the most hedonistic, dry, full-bodied Zinfandels I have ever drunk. It should continue to drink well for at least a decade, but who has the discipline to squirrel away a few bottles for that long? The 1995 Zinfandels are the products of extraordinary vineyards and genius winemaking - no doubt about it. |

| WA 90-92 (6/1999): The 1997 Zinfandel Duarte Vineyard (from 102-year old vines; 15.4% alcohol) is the finest wine I have tasted from this source. Duarte is one of the few remaining California vineyards where the vines are planted on their own roots, rather than being grafted, as the region's sandy soils have proved to be resistant to the phylloxera disease. This wine always seems to have a dusty, balsam wood, Provencal herb, peppery note, but the 1997 reveals more cherry liqueur and black raspberries. Additionally, the color is a saturated dark ruby/purple. Full-bodied and concentrated, with deep layers of flavor that inundate the palate, it should drink well for 5-7 years. |

WA 90-92 (12/1997): The 1996 Zinfandel Grist Vineyard, which emerges from Dry Creek, tips the scales at a blockbuster 16.3% alcohol. This wine offers lusty levels of lavishly jammy black cherry fruit intermixed with raspberries, pepper, earth, and spice. Wow, what an astonishing level of pleasure this huge, massive Zin provides! It is a wine to drink over the next 5-8 years.
IWC 90 (6/1998): Medium-dark red. Superripe-verging-on-raisiny on the nose, with a note of black pepper. Supersweet and lush; hits all those hard-to-reach areas of the mouth. Long, soft aftertaste. Should be a crowdpleaser.
WS 89 (7/1998): Ripe, almost raisiny, with dry, earthy sage, wild berry and black cherry flavors. A mouthful of Zin. Finishes with firm tannins. Drink now through 2002. |

| WA 90 (6/2000): It is hard to believe, but the 1998 Zinfandel Grist Vineyard (16.4% alcohol) possesses an undeniable sense of elegance and symmetry. In a blind tasting, it could be mistaken for a premier cru from Volnay by some of those silly terroirists who always like to do a lot more postulating than tasting. This medium-bodied Zinfandel reveals a flamboyant side to its elegance, and somehow manages to hide its alcohol. This Zinfandel exhibits delicious berry and cherry fruit with a strawberry liqueur-like after-finish. Drink it over the next 5-6 years. |

WA 90-92 (1/2000): The 1998 Charbono Tofanelli Vineyard continues the great success they have had with this lowly esteemed varietal. Dark ruby/purple-colored, with an earthy, spicy, gorgeously pure nose, this wine offers blueberry and blackberry flavors as well as copious quantities of earthy richness, and a spicy, long, full-bodied, powerful finish. It should drink well for 10-15 years.
IWC 89 (6/2000): Bright dark ruby. Cassis, blueberry, dark chocolate, shoe polish and a floral note on the nose. Supple entry, then comes across as quite dry and less viscous than the last few zins, and distinctly fresher than the '97 bottling. Tannins are substantial but not hard—very much like the tannins of petite sirah. |

| WA 90 (8/2002): The medium-bodied 2000 Charbono Tofanelli Vineyard (sadly, only 250 cases produced) reveals a meaty, earthy, damp forest, and black cherry-scented perfume. As the wine sits in the glass, a floral (acacia?) note emerges. It should drink well for 10-15 years. It is a curiosity, although a wonderful one. |

| WA 91-93 (6/1999): The 1997 Zinfandel Tofanelli Vineyard (from 65-year old vines; 15.8% alcohol) is a broodingly backward, expansive yet undeniably hedonistically oriented wine. The dark ruby/purple color is accompanied by notes of blackberries, jus de viande, pepper, roasted herbs, and truffles. Full-bodied, with dazzling fruit extract, a voluptuous texture, and a spectacular finish, this is a superb Zinfandel to enjoy over the next 5-7 years. |

WA 91 (6/2000): Readers looking for a Zinfandel with a Rhone-like personality should check out the 1998 Zinfandel Vineyard 101. Offering an explosive nose of dried herbs, ground pepper, new saddle leather, rose petals, black raspberries, and cherries, this fat, dense, full-bodied, luscious wine possesses low acidity, but gobs of fruit. Drink it over the next 4-5 years.
IWC 89 (6/2000): Good medium ruby. Blackberry, espresso and pepper on the nose, along with a suggestion of stewed fruit. Sweet and nicely concentrated, with hints of blackberry, orange peel and spice. Very good but not outstanding depth of flavor. Still quite tightly wrapped; may show more nuance with a couple years of bottle aging. |
