1993 Concha y Toro Don Melchor Private Reserve - Don Melchor Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon [Rating: WS 90 / WA 89] - $50.00

WS 90 (3/2001): Emits a pronounced minty aroma, with fleshy currant, coffee and chocolate flavors. Dense, but stays stylish, with bright, ripe acidity carrying the finish.--Don Melchor vertical. Drink now through 2002. 10,000 cases made. WA 89 (4/2002): The dark ruby-colored 1993 displays a lovely nose of Moroccan spices, mostly cumin and cinnamon. On the palate, it is broad, expansive, and extravagant, and then tightens in its firm finish. Layers of dark fruits are intermingled with fresh herbs in this delightful wine's opening and mid-palate. If its finish softens with age, it will most certainly merit an outstanding score.

1994 Concha y Toro Don Melchor Private Reserve - Don Melchor Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon [Rating: WS 90 / WA 89] - $59.00

WS 90 (3/2001): Gorgeous. Mixes mint, smoke, black cherry and sanguine notes up front, then picks up additional mineral and clay flavors on the firm, muscular finish. Delicious, and just about to hit its peak.--Don Melchor vertical. Drink now through 2004. 4,000 cases imported.WA 89 (4/2002): The dark ruby-colored 1994 exhibits blackberry, cassis, pit fruits, and spices in its aromatics. This extremely youthful wine has outstanding depth to its dark, fruit-laden character. It is medium to full-bodied and concentrated, revealing copious quantities of tannin (yet they are ripe) in its firm finish. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2013.

1996 Concha y Toro Don Melchor Private Reserve - Don Melchor Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon [Rating: WA 89 / WS 89 / IWC 89] - $65.00

WA 89 (4/2002): The 1996 is medium to dark ruby-colored and has a red fruit (mostly cherries and raspberries) filled nose. It is medium-bodied and firm, with juicy cherries and blackberries as well as zesty hints of currants in its foursquare personality. Analytically, this wine has a high pH, but the acidity that it does have is tartaric (not lactic) and, therefore, it is tightly wound and firmer than wines that possess high percentages of lactic acid. Drink it over the next 8 years.WS 89 (3/2001): Concentrated and fleshy, but doesn't show the vivacity of the other recent vintages. Still, there's enough currant and black cherry here to give it the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps a little dumb right now.--Don Melchor vertical. Best from 2002 through 2004. 3,250 cases imported.IWC 89 (4/2000): Saturated ruby-red. Pungently herbal yet compelling aromas of basil and rosemary, along with a resiny nuance and a floral note of rose petal. Supple and fairly intensely flavored, though not particularly fleshy; flavors of cassis, cranberry and pomegranate complicated by eucalyptus and mint. The strong bitter red berry quality carries through to the firmly tannic finish. A still-young wine that's long on personality.

1998 Chateau La Joya Gran Reserva - Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon [Rating: WS 81] - $10.00

WS 81 (3/2001): Has some dried currant and plum, with a rustic feel, and a moderate finish. Drink now. 25,000 cases made.

1997 Vina Quebrada de Macul Domus Aurea - Domus Aurea [Rating: WS 91] - $49.00

WS 91 (2/2001): Expressive mint, smoke, vanilla, clay and iron notes add interest and dimension to the superripe currant and plum. Dense and extracted, with serious structure embedded in its polished finish. Should develop nicely with cellaring. A distinctive and impressive example of Maipo terroir. Best from 2002 through 2005. 2,400 cases made.

1997 Santa Rita Casa Real - Casa Real Cabernet Sauvignon [Rating: WS 90 / IWC 88] - $35.00

WS 90 (3/2000): Dark, with a brooding nose that offers glimpses of cedar, coffee and smoke. The dense chocolate- and cassis-laden palate is harnessed by ripe, round tannins and snappy acidity. Winey and extracted, this should develop finesse with short-term cellaring. Best from 2001 through 2003. 645 cases imported.IWC 88 (4/2000): Deep ruby-red. Smoky, sweet aromas of black raspberry, cassis, iron, graphite and spicy oak. Round and supple, but given cut and clarity by ripe acids. Blackcurrant and mineral flavors offer very good intensity. Finishes with ripe tannins and good length. I might have scored this even higher but for a faint dry spot in the middle. Still, it offers a lot of character.
