2000 Vina Almaviva - Proprietary Blend [Rating: WS 91] - $75.00

WS 91 (10/2002): The currant, cedar, mineral and cocoa flavors smolder underneath the fleshy, enveloping mouthfeel, with a wall of ripe, finely grained tannins taking over on the smoky finish. Not quite as dense as top vintages, but still clearly outstanding. Cabernet Sauvignon with Carmenère. Drink now through 2007. 16,000 cases made.

2008 Cono Sur Vision - Vision Sauvignon Blanc [Rating: IWC 89] - $6.99

IWC 89 (4/2009): Pale yellow. Nervy, sharply focused aromas of lime zest, tarragon and mint, with a subtle overlay of chalk. Taut citrus and green apple flavors are refreshingly bitter and complemented by succulent herbs. The tarragon note lingers on a long, juicy finish. The energy of this wine is impressive.

2002 Casa Lapostolle - Clos Apalta [Rating: WS 93 / WA 92 / IWC 87] - $59.00

WS 93 (3/2005): Beautiful color, with vivid boysenberry and blackberry fruit flavors that easily handle the layers of vanilla-tinged toast. Roasted herb, briar and black currant notes run through the finish, which shows the firm edge of the vintage, but a superb effort nonetheless. Carmenère, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2009. 3,150 cases made.WA 92 (6/2005): The Clos Apalta luxury cuvee, primarily based on an old vine, non-irrigated Carmenere parcel, remains one of Chile’s standard-bearers. Displaying aromas of sweet, spicy cassis, the 2002 Clos Apalta is a concentrated, medium to full-bodied wine with intense black cherry, black currant liqueur, spice, and pepper flavors. This serious, focused, well-structured effort is jam-packed with fruit, and reveals a lengthy, tannin-studded finish. It should be drunk over the next 7-8 years.IWC 87 (4/2006): Deep ruby. Oak-spicy aromas of clove, nutmeg, cocoa powder, espresso and raspberry preserves. The intense spice character carries through in the mouth, where there's a sweet red berry tone and lush, silky texture. This clearly has great material and is plenty sweet but it's a shame that the wood is so dominant.

2003 Don Melchor (Concha y Toro) - Cabernet Sauvignon - $50.00

2007 Don Melchor (Concha y Toro) - Cabernet Sauvignon [Rating: WS 93 / IWC 92] - $48.95

WS 93 (11/2010): Still a touch tight, but dense, focused and layered, with well-integrated structure underneath loam, blackberry, espresso, tobacco and sage notes. The long finish has nice drive, with the loam edge stretching out. This has the poise and balance for cellaring. Drink now through 2017. 8,900 cases made. IWC 92 (6/2011): Glass-staining ruby. Sexy, highly perfumed aromas of raspberry, cherry compote and potpourri, made more complex by notes of musky herbs and tobacco. The yield in '07 was reportedly pitifully low but this wine comes off as lithe and energetic, with excellent clarity and sweet red fruit character. Finishes with noteworthy length, clarity and a juicy red fruit character, and with very soft tannins. This will drink well young or with age. I also had the chance to re-visit the 2006 Don Melchor, and it has put on weight and richness since last year, but with no loss of vivacity. I'd keep my hands off my bottles for at least another five years.
