Loire wines in the Flickinger Fine Wines inventory http://www.flickingerwines.com/wineregions/loire.asp WA 91 (8/2010): Hints of smoked meat, snuffed candle wick, iris, black tea, quinine, and white truffle join fresh quince and apple in the nose of Baumard’s 2007 Savennieres Clos du Papillon as well as on a satin-textured palate which - like that of the corresponding "regular" bottling - retains a satisfying sense of juicy freshness. The fascinating array of bitter and smoky elements promised in the nose is delivered without exaggeration - accompanied by a wet stone undertone and persistently wafting bittersweet florality - and without arresting the flow of fresh fruit in the finish. Hints of white pepper and toasted nuts add an additional element of piquancy. There is a welcome sense of transparency and buoyancy here too often missing from this appellation, including Baumard’s renditions. Intensely perfumed bouquet of lime zest, Anjou pear, talc, white pepper and anise. Sweet orchard fruit and melon flavors are braced by zesty citrus fruits and dusty minerals, with a touch of bitter quinine emerging on the back half. Dry, focused, pure Sancerre, finishing with impressive clarity and mineral drive.WA 88 (8/2010): Francois Cotat’s 2008 Sancerre Les Caillottes (from recently acquired and young vines) smells of gooseberry and chalk dust; comes to the palate tart and bright with fresh lime and gooseberry pungency; and finishes with lip smacking, invigorating citricity, salinity, chalkiness, and a hint of iodine. Smokier and more powerful than the Caillottes on the nose, showing ripe pear and yellow plum. Rich, palate-coating pear and pit fruit flavors are firmed by a bitter lemon zest quality and pack a real punch. The finish repeats the citrussy note and lingers with excellent persistence.WA 90 (8/2010): Musky scents of narcissus emerge from the glass of Francois Cotat 2008 Sancerre Les Monts Damnes, along with mint and Persian melon, setting the stage for a surprisingly soft and rounded palate presentation, at once soothing and refreshing, with subtle interplay of herbal, fungal, and fruit notes in the finish.
