1989 Aldo Conterno Barolo - Barolo Cicala [Rating: WA 95] - $159.00

WA 95 (4/2007): After tasting the 1989 Bussia earlier this year, I was curious to check in on the Cicala. The Cicala is Aldo Conterno’s most masculine Barolo, as the soils here are extremely poor, and thus yield wines of great structure. The wine is dark ruby in color, with no signs whatsoever of age. The wine is rich and decadent, with generous flavors of dark cherries, spices, tar, and plenty of tannins. The Cicala appears to still very young and in need of further cellaring. This wine was tasted in casual occasions with friends. It was not tasted blind, nor was it tasted in peer-group settings, so my comments should not be interpreted as a formal tasting note, rather as a general impression.

1989 Aldo Conterno Barolo - Barolo Colonnello [Rating: WA 93 / WS 89] - $169.00

WA 93 (4/1993): Of Aldo Conterno's 1989 Barolos, the Vigna Cicala is the one to drink first. Although the 1989 Barolo-Vigna Colonello is deeply colored, tannic, and backward, it displays tremendous potential for future evolution. The wine has an herb and tobacco character, huge body and extract, and considerable glycerin, tannin, and alcohol in the finish. It will not be at its best until the late nineties, but it should evolve gracefully through the first two decades of the next century.WS 89 (10/1993): Crisp and focused, with layers of mineral, earth and tar streaking through the firm black cherry and slightly tart flavors. A steely, firm wine that needs a long time to come around. Best from 1997 through 2008. 434 cases made.

1985 Castello di Neive Barbaresco - Barbaresco Santo Stefano Riserva - $59.00

2004 Riecine La Gioia (12X750ML) - La Gioia - $519.00

2004 Riecine La Gioia (6X750ML) - La Gioia - $274.00
