Today at Flickinger Wines we would like to showcase a recently acquired cellar of just German Riesling from the Mosel. This collection is further focused here on just two iconic producers, Prum and Muller. Each of these wines is a true showstopper Riesling, and an excellent opportunity for those of you who are new to German wine to add some true classics. Happy Hunting!!

VM 89 (9/2014): Apricot, candied lemon and pine nuts on the nose and palate. Glossy yet light and refreshing, this Kabinett tastes almost off-dry in style. The clean, rather austere finish features lime and discreet slate. Joel B. Payne. |

VM 91 (7/2016): Stony and alkaline, informed by white currant and lime as well as white peach, this is as bright and minerally a Scharzhofberger Kabinett as I can recall. At the same time – in keeping with its having been harvested immediately after significant rainfall – there isn’t the focused sense of concentration that applies to this year’s Scharzhofberg Spätlesen or to a more typical Müller Kabinett. There is also a pronounced, slightly atypical sense of levity and delicacy that I find delightful, even though the musts here averaged a relatively high 89 degrees Oechsle. An infusion of salinity activates the salivary glands in a sustained finish. Whether or not this singular Scharzhofberger Kabinett will display the longevity usually associated with that genre, I hesitate to predict, and I suspect few Riesling lovers cellar their Müller Kabinetts more than a decade anyway. VM 94 (5/2017): This sister bottling to the auctioned A.P. #4, harvested the same mid-October day, represents a second fuder from the estate’s sole remaining stand of single-post-trained (Stockkultur) vines, planted in 1958. Müller plans to sell it directly into the trade, probably with an emphasis on restaurants. Bright lime, lusciously ripe white peach, cooling and incisive herbal inflections (mint, lovage, and cress), maritime salinity and wet stone are all announced on the nose, then reconvene on a palpably dense yet alcoholically modest palate. There is a bit more snap, pungency and mineral diversity to this wine’s mouthwatering, vibratory finish than that of the marginally richer and more texturally alluring A.P. #4. What a dream to be able to follow the fruits of these two remarkable fuders! David Schildknecht. |

VM 89 (5/2017): This bottling, as usual based in large part on Saarburg and Oberemmel fruit but also incorporating a bit from Wiltingen, delightfully illustrates the bright, animating acidity of its vintage. Fresh apple and pear are laced with zesty lemon and lime and underlain by wet stone on a firm, palpably extract-rich palate. Green herbal pungency and peat-like smokiness lend further interest to an exuberant and refreshing finish. David Schildknecht. |

VM 96 (7/2016): Whereas the corresponding Braune Kupp auction Spätlese represented a cask selection, this Scharzhofberger reflects a separate picking from the estate’s oldest vines, undertaken with the express intention of achieving auction potential. A head-turning nose and a palate luscious yet cheek-pinching in brightness and mouth-shakingly vibrant deliver white peach, grapefruit and lime wreathed in freesia and infused with Ceylon tea, moss and crushed stone. And as if my mouth wasn’t wrung out already, this beauty’s formidably penetrating, downright reverberative finish – transparent to a shimmering wealth of floral and mineral elements – exhibits tannic grip and milks the salivary glands with its salinity. I fantasized while tasting it that some of those collectors typically in a position to bid on this wine at auction might be scared off by its singular intensity! David Schildknecht. |
