Spain!
Today we would like to highlight our superb inventory of Spanish wine with you. No country marries the traditional and modern quite like Spain does - grape growing and wine making pre-date the Romans, but it was not until the 1990's that modern techniques and a (re)investment in many regions throughout the country took hold. Vega Sicilia perfectly embodies this duality; long considered one of the world's greatest producers since the turn of the last century, their legendary Único is the essential classic Spanish wine while their more recent expansion throughout Spain including Alión in Ribera del Duero are beautiful examples of what modern Spanish winemaking can achieve. Our inventory is ripe with classics like Único, Lopez de Heredia and La Rioja Alta, and also includes modern greats like Numanthia and Pinea. Browse this great list and add some Spanish gems to your cellar today!

WA 93 (10/1998): The 100% Tempranillo 1996 Cuvee Campanario represents a blend of the finest parcels of Tempranillo. The wine was aged in 100% new French Limousin oak for 16 months, then bottled without filtration. It reveals a saturated purple color, and is more backward both aromatically and on the palate, as well as more impressive. The wine's bouquet falls in the black fruit spectrum of aromas - blackberries, black raspberries, and overripe cherries. Full-bodied and tightly-knit, with intriguing mineral notes, this powerful, rich, layered wine could easily pass for a top-class Bordeaux in a blind tasting. The result of 28 days of maceration, the high tannin is sweet and well-integrated in the wine's framework. However, I would not recommend drinking this offering for 2-3 more years. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2020. |

VM 91 (10/2008): (100% tempranillo) Bright ruby-red. Redcurrant and cherry aromas are complicated by black pepper and zesty minerals. Juicy and focused, with fresh red berry flavors and an exotic candied floral quality. Becomes sweeter and creamier on the broad, long finish. This is already attractive and complex enough to drink but is built to reward cellaring. |

VM 93 (10/2004): Bright medium ruby. Roasted plum, meat and nutty oak on the nose. Very sweet, deep flavors of cassis, chocolate and licorice, given shape and clarity by sappy, harmonious acids. Broad, lush and full but also boasts terrific vinosity. Finishes long, smooth and sweet, with chewy, ripe, toothcoating tannins. Impressive. |

VM 88 (11/2001): Red-ruby. Crushed currant and raspberry and tarry oak on the nose, along with an herbal nuance. Then rich, sweet and expansive in the mouth, despite a hint of greenness. Finishes ripely tannic and long, with a note of green olive. This is essentially Mauro's crianza, which in '99 was bottled with the slightly adjusted appellation Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y Leon. VM 93 (9/2006): Inky ruby. Exotic aromas of blackberry, boysenberry, roasted coffee, dark chocolate and cured tobacco. Lush, sweet and smoky, with a supple texture to the deep dark berry liqueur flavors. No edges here, just luscious dark fruits and a wild smoky quality that carries into the finish. Impressively powerful and rich on the back end, with a lingering blackberry quality that won't quit. Josh Raynolds. |

VM 91+ (12/2001): Bright deep ruby. Superripe aromas of cassis, black raspberry, bitter chocolate and smoky, spicy oak. Liqueur-like yet brisk and penetrating in the mouth, with a real burst of dark berry, bitter chocolate and licorice flavors. If this were overoaked, it could not possibly be this aromatic in the mouth. Finishes firmly tannic and long. There's a lot going on here, as well as a strong sensation of soil character._x000D__x000D_ WA 91 (8/2001): My favorite offering from Finca Allende is the 1999 Calvario, a single vineyard Rioja produced from vines planted in 1945. Aged completely in new French oak, this wine is layered, rich, and concentrated, with soft tannin, good balance, and up-front appeal. A blend of 90% Tempranillo, 8% Grenache, and 2% Graciano, it is made from small yields of 1.8 tons of fruit per acre. Deep, layered, and impressive, it should drink well for 10-15 years. There is little value to be found from Allende, but the quality of the wine is impressive. _x000D__x000D_ WS 90 (6/2002): This voluptuous red shows international style, with exuberant flavors of blackberry jam, toast and chocolate, a velvety texture and firm underlying tannins. It's nothing like traditional Rioja, but impressive nonetheless. Drink now through 2010. 125 cases imported. |

JS 96 (10/2020): Lovely dried red fruit, such as plums with just a hint of prunes. Cedar, walnut and leather undertones. Full-bodied with lots of fruit, considering its age, as well as hints of smoke, tobacco, bark and black tea. Some balsamic at the finish. Traditionally styled with lovely results. Drink or hold. VM 94 (9/2020): The 2011 Rioja Gran Reserva 904 has been one of my go-to cuvées since my earliest days as a wine lover. This latest release is a blend of 60-year-old Tempranillo from Briñas, Rodenzo and Villalba (89%) and the remainder Graciano from the Montecillo vineyard. Fully de-stemmed and aged for 54 months in American oak, it was bottled in November 2016. This is more reticent and less forthcoming on the nose compared to the Viña Ardanza, gradually unfolding to reveal enticing scents of raspberry, crushed strawberry, warm leather, terra cotta and a touch of meat juice. This needed more decanting than the Ardanza. The palate is beautifully balanced with fine-grained tannins, and ultra-smooth in terms of texture. Layers of red fruit laced with clove, sprigs of fresh mint and blood orange dovetail into a soy-tinged finish that you expect to fan out, though it declines; it needs maybe another 12–18 months to really show what it is capable of. Magnificent. Neal Martin. WA 94 (10/2020): I usually prefer the 904 to the 890, but there will be no Gran Reserva 890 until the 2010 vintage (from the last vintage I tasted, 2005). So, the only one of the extended-aging Haro-style reds I tasted this time was the 2011 Gran Reserva 904, which had a hard act to follow after the 2010 vintage. It's a blend of 89% Tempranillo and 11% Graciano matured in American oak barrels for four years, and it was racked eight times from barrel to barrel during its élevage, which sounds a bit harsh for a vintage like 2011 when the wines were not as complete and robust as in 2010. It has the classic profile, aromas and flavors (decayed leaves, tobacco, sweet spices, a meaty touch and some black fruit), but the oak seems to take a more leading role and the palate feels less juicy. It finishes dry. The final blend was bottled in November 2016, filling 150,000 bottles. |

JS 94 (1/2018): Super deep and concentrated, this has menacingly deep black plum and cherry fruits. There are iodine and coal smoky notes, yet the fruit is all powerful. There's an extra dimension on the palate with a silky glycerol layer. Drink now but best from 2025. WS 91 (6/2018): Cherry, cranberry and red plum flavors show a tart, crunchy character in this red, while firm tannins and citrusy acidity keep this solid and structured. Offers power and energy. Drink now through 2025. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 600 cases made. |

JS 93 (8/2018): As dense and dark as a young vintage port, but much less alcoholic, this is a concentrated and elegant Ribera del Duero that has a long, polished finish. Drink or hold. JG 92+ (6/2018): This is the flagship wine from this new project in Ribera del Duero, founded by partners Vincente Pilego and Hugo Del Pozzo. They have hired the very talented Isaac Fernandez as their winemaker for the project. The 2014 vintage is the first release from the estate, with the wine composed entirely of tempranillo from thirty year-old vines and the elevage done for thirty months in all new French oak. The 2014 Pinea comes in at 14.5 percent octane and really blossoms nicely with some extended breathing. The bouquet eventually offers up a fine blend of black cherries, plums, Cuban cigar wrapper, a fine base of soil, dark chocolate and smoky new oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and quite elegant in profile, with a plush core of fruit, very good focus and grip, ripe, well-integrated tannins and a long, ripe and well-balanced finish. This carries its 14.5 percent octane quite well and should drink very nicely with a few more years’ worth of bottle age. This is a very impressive first release of the flagship wine here, WA 91 (8/2018): The ambitious (look at the price tag and the size of the bottle) 2014 Pinea is a little predictable—a generously oaked, ripe and concentrated Tempranillo selected from their oldest vineyards. The hand-sorted and destemmed grapes fermented in 400-liter French oak barrels and matured in new French oak barrels for some 30 months. It's full-bodied, dense and concentrated, with plenty of oak flavors and a slight bitterness on the finish, possibly from the oak. It should develop for some time in bottle. For fans of oaky Tempranillo. Leave it for a little more time in bottle and drink with powerful food. 13,000 bottles were filled in April 2017. |

JS 97 (6/2018): Maybe the idea of a Gran Reserva rosé seems crazy, but this great wine happens to be a rosé. The whole range of dried fruit, plus a lemon-zest freshness which lights up the full and complex body. Take your time to unravel this wine’s mystery, if you can find one of the rare bottles. Drink or hold. WA 94 (2/2018): The only Gran Reserva rosé of the Rioja appellation (they were waiting for the appellation's back labels, as they have to print them especially for López de Heredia) makes a glorious comeback with the 2008 Viña Tondonia Rosado Gran Reserva, which follows the previous 2000. This has a completely different profile from the rest of the rosé wines produced in Rioja—and the whole world (I think, as I have not tasted them all!). It really is a "clarete," not a rosé, as it's produced with a mixture of red and white grapes (60% Garnacha, 30% Tempranillo and 10% Viura) fermented and macerated together. It's a matured and developed rosé aged in used American oak barrels for four years and kept in vat and bottle to be released at age ten. VM 93 (6/2018): Pale copper-tinged orange. A powerfully scented bouquet evokes orange zest, red currant, rose oil, cinnamon and smoky minerals. Juicy and precise on the palate, offering intense red berry and citrus fruit flavors along with hints of honey, vanilla and candied flowers. Deftly blends power and finesse and shows no rough edges. The mineral and floral notes carry strongly through an impressively long finish that displays outstanding clarity and spicy cut. Josh Raynolds. WS 91 (6/2018): This rosé shows a distinctive character, with an orange color, a firm texture and flavors of dried orange, kumquat, cocoa and tea. Balanced and harmonious, and a good match with food. Drink now through 2020. 2,083 cases made, 250 cases imported. |

VM 94 (8/2019): Light bright amber-hued orange. Mineral- and spice-accented red currant and cherry scents, joined by building herb and floral nuances. Shows noteworthy depth as well as energy to the bitter cherry, succulent herb, spicecake and blood orange flavors, which turn sweeter as the wine stretches out. Finishes extremely long and chewy, with resonating floral and red fruit character and a lingering suggestion of fennel. Aged for four years in neutral American oak barrels and racked twice a year. Josh Raynolds. |

WA 97 (8/2012): Pablo Alvarez described 2004 as a textbook vintage with perfect temperatures and rain just when it was needed. The 2004 has a haunting bouquet of dark brambly black fruit, cassis, honey, a tang of marmalade and bacon fat. It already boasts an intense, burly bouquet that will require years to soften. The palate is full-bodied with succulent, ripe, intense black cherries, white pepper, minerals and liquorice and it fans out beautifully towards the finish with tar-tinged black fruit interlaced with black pepper. This is a multi-dimensional Unico, more masculine and grander than the 2005, perhaps the sibling of the 1994? VM 96 (9/2014): (roughly 85% tempranillo and 15% cabernet sauvignon; aged for a total of seven years in large oak vats, new small barrels, used small barrels and large oak vats to rest before bottling, in that order): Inky ruby: doesn't look like a ten-year old wine. A heady, intensely perfumed bouquet evokes ripe red and dark berries, vanilla, pipe tobacco, new leather and potpourri, with a subtle mineral flourish. Spicy, sweet and expansive, offering palate-staining cherry compote and cassis flavors with exotic violet and chewing tobacco qualities. Deepens and gains spiciness on the smooth, gently tannic finish, which lingers with superb focus and tenacity. WS 94 (10/2014): This expressive red shows lacy notes of floral, cedar, tobacco, spice and orange peel that mingle in a lean, firm texture and linger on the long, spicy finish. Delivers backbone and grace, in a traditional style. Drink now through 2024. 7,000 cases made. |

WA 98 (1/2019): I tasted a bottle of the 2009 Único blind and was taken by the freshness, the red fruit notes and the Burgundian-like characteristics of this vintage, which on paper was quite warm and dry. I also tasted the 2009 Valbuena, which is always more approachable, and was blown away by its aromatics. With time in the glass the Único opened up and got closer to the character of Valbuena but with more depth and clout, while showing extremely elegant. I tasted it again in the context of all the wines from the group, and it delivered all that I saw when I tasted it blind. It takes some time to unfurl its aromatic palette, and it feels young and somewhat undeveloped, younger than it is. It has a touch that made me think of the old vintages of Único on the nose but with very polished tannins and a soft mouthfeel that provides elegance. This is a wine that ages for no less than ten years before it's released. 2009 seems like a great vintage for Vega Sicilia, much better than what I anticipated. It should develop nicely in bottle. 74,274 bottles, 3,390 magnums, 209 double magnums and 22 imperials were produced. It has been in bottle since June 2015. JS 98 (12/2018): The elevage is complex, building from smaller barrels to larger barrels over a period of six years, finishing in larger vats. Then four years in bottle. Non-sequential releasing with the 2005 and 2006 being released after the 2007 and 2008. This 2009 has good ripeness and deep fruit-presence on the nose with rich red and dark plums, subtly earthy spice, cedar and fresh tobacco. There’s terrific concentration on the palate and very ripe dark-plum, blueberry and cherry flavors. The tannins are fresh, very long and carry flavors deep. Natural freshness and effortless power, too — a hallmark of Unico! Very open-knit and approachable now, this will age for two decades easily, and then some more. |

JS 99 (6/2019): This is still very tight and closed with so much depth and beauty. The linear line to this is very vertical and draws you down. It shows intense blackberry, dark-chocolate, hazelnut and walnut character. Full body. Chewy yet extremely polished. Precise. Shows decadence. So drinkable already, but better in 2022. WA 97 (12/2019): I was surprised by the aromatics of the 2010 Único, cropped from a powerful and concentrated year that delivered this blend of 94% Tinto Fino (aka Tempranillo) and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, with 14.5% alcohol and a highish pH of 3.87. It fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in a combination of French and American oak barrels and 20,000-liter oak vats and aged for almost six years. It feels quite ripe and somehow old style, dominated by ripe black fruit, with a rustic and earthy touch. It has an ample palate, concentrated and powerful, with some earthy tannins. 85,185 bottles, 3,362 magnums, 228 double magnums and 36 Imperials were produced. It was bottled in June 2016. |

WA 92 (8/2006): The deep purple-colored 2004 Cenit offers more nuances, complexity, and aromatic intensity (graphite, blackberries, blueberries, and spice box) than the 2003 along with great elegance allied with fabulous richness and full body. It should drink well for a decade. Think of it as a more delineated, complex version of the 2003. |

VM 93 (9/2008): Inky ruby color. Hugely aromatic, alluring bouquet of blackberry and cherry compote, with suave oak spices and cured tobacco adding complexity. Lush and creamy on the palate, with slow-building acidity contributing energy and cut to the sweet dark berry and candied cherry flavors. Tannins build on the finish, which strongly echoes the sweet dark berry qualities. This is already really seductive. Josh Raynolds. |
