WS 95 (6/2007): Smooth, plush and concentrated. A multidimensional expression of Cabernet, with layers of currant, blackberry, plum and spice. Supple-textured, this keeps a focus on the fruit and is supported by firm, ripe tannins. Yet fruit glides through on the finish. Best from 2008 through 2014. 737 cases made. WA 94 (12/2006): The dense purple-colored 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon’s hefty 15.1% alcohol is well-disguised by classic aromas of white chocolate, black currants, blackberries, licorice, and coffee beans. This dense, medium to full-bodied, opulent, fleshy, powerful effort boasts sweet tannin and low acidity. Drink it over the next 10-15 years. VM 91 (6/2007): (15.4% alcohol; includes 4% merlot) Bright ruby-red. Roasted dark berries, black cherry, graphite, dark chocolate and nutty oak on the nose. Smooth and sweet in the mouth, with the dark fruit flavors joined by smoke and earth notes. Substantial tannins show a slight dryness. Not the last word in complexity but there's more going on here than just fruit. |

WA 96 (12/2009): The blockbuster 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon is more primary, but it does display enormous fruit concentration, massive body, and wonderful purity, balance, and elegance. It is an extraordinarily promising 2007 with awesome fruit, depth and richness as well as a long finish. This offering will be even better with 5-7 years of bottle age, and should keep for 20+ years. VM 93+ (6/2010): (includes bits of merlot and malbec) Good full, saturated ruby. An essence of Napa cabernet on the nose, with dominant notes of cassis, dark chocolate, minerals and violet. Juicy but youthfully brooding, with a slightly medicinal quality to the intense flavors of cassis, bitter chocolate, graphite and menthol. Not a particularly fleshy style but vibrant and penetrating. This wine's firm acids and tongue-dusting tannins call for at least five or six years of patience. This wine, a blend from 10 or 12 different vineyards all over Napa Valley, was vinified by Mark Herold. Rebecca Weinberg is currently the winemaker here, with Celia Welch consulting. WS 93 (9/2010): A dark, rich, exotic style, this Cabernet is bold and intense, with kirsch, black currant, wild berry and black cherry flavors that are ripe. Full-bodied and well-structured, ending with a long, persistent finish, where red and black licorice commingle. Drink now through 2019. 1,110 cases made. |

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon |

|
WS 94 (3/1990): (WS #24 wine of 1990) Clearly the best regular Cabernet from Caymus yet. Complex, elegant and delicious already, with chocolate- and smoke-tinged plum and cherry aromas and flavors. Supple, smooth and amazingly long on the finish. Uncommonly complex and elegant; drinkable now. 4,000 cases made. |

Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon |

|
WS 96 (7/2010): This firm, ripe, muscular wine that's tight, deep, structured, intense and concentrated, serving up a mix of ripe currant, cassis, plum, black cherry and blackberry fruit that's clean, pure, complex and layered, with touches of anise, cedar and black licorice. Ends with chewy tannins. Best from 2011 through 2019. 10,000 cases made. WA 93 (12/2010): The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection (100% Cabernet Sauvignon, now bottled earlier than in the past) exhibits an inky/blue/purple color in addition to sweet aromas of cassis, graphite, licorice, tobacco leaf and toasty oak. Bold, flamboyant and opulent, it should drink well for 15+ years. |

Estate Cabernet Sauvignon |

|
WA 93 (12/2006): While the 2002, which was quite extroverted right before bottling, has shut down, the 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is still open-knit, although I suspect it will probably close down as well. It exhibits an opaque ruby/purple color along with a sweet, spicy nose of black currants, licorice, herbs, and damp earth. Rich and concentrated, it is the most accessible, and possibly the most elegant and French-oriented of the Cabernets produced between 2002 and 2004. This top-notch effort should be cellared for 2-3 years, and consumed over the following 20-25 years. VM 91 (6/2006): Bright ruby-red. Sweet aromas of black cherry, flowers, menthol and creosote. Supple, sweet and fine-grained, though not especially nuanced for this wine. Strong note of chocolate. Finishes with a fairly fine dusting of tannins and lingering notes of cherry and licorice. This seems a bit less vibrant than it was from barrel a year ago. Barrett noted that the December 2005 bottling date was quite late for this wine, and my sample had not yet recovered. WS 87 (10/2007): Firm and dry, this is marked by chewy tannins. The core currant, pencil lead and dusty berry flavors are well-focused and long on the finish. The tannic strength and dryness are my major concerns. Decant. The best of two bottles tasted. Drink now through 2013. 12,000 cases made. |

Royal City Syrah |
$129 |

|
WA 92 (12/2012): Representing the fourth installment of a wine designed to showcase what he treats as his Cinderella vineyard (though it's not actually his), with whose Syrah vines as he puts it "we hit it out of the ballpark already with the first vintage," Smith's 2009 Syrah Stoneridge Vineyard Royal City combines amazing density of sappy cassis, cherry concentrate, bitter huckleberry, licorice and road tar with vibratory impingement of brown spices, citrus rind, brined anchovy, and some je ne sais quoi that, as with numerous other Washington behemoths, it manages to pull from an environmental stock of energy. All of that said, you'll have to really like the particular flavors on exhibit here to want to imbibe them at this level of near-overwhelming concentration; overnight the only change I noted was the emergence of a faintly caramelized and rancid note from oak; and whether the strong tannins that lurk beneath this wine's sweet, viscous, tarry surface will remain well-blanketed as it evolves in bottle only time can tell. (I'll hope to taste one of the four previous vintages of Royal City next year, but even so, wine built to this scale must count as very young still at only age six or less.) Naturally it hasn't escaped me that most of my fellow critics have praised these Royal City wines as if they represented the proverbial Shining City on the Hill of Syrah, and some friends I especially respect have written eloquently of their virtues. I guess I have to part ways with them in the degree of excitement I find myself able to muster for an, as yet at least, rather amorphous syrup of Syrah, even one so startlingly shot through with virtual lightning bolts of energy. But, as already suggested, I'll hope to find out what precipitates from this big, dark vinous storm cloud over the years. |

|
VM 92 (6/2013): Bright ruby-red. Lively, floral-accented aromas of red fruit preserves, cola and Asian spices, with a strong mineral overtone. Offers sappy raspberry and cherry flavors and suave vanilla and spicecake qualities that gain strength with air. Finishes sweet and long, with lingering rose and star anise notes and silky tannins. Distinctly elegant, with the balance to age. This wine got 40% new oak and checks in at 13.5% alcohol. Josh Raynolds. |

Jack Hill Vyd. Pinot Noir |
$59 |

|
VM 92 (7/2013): The 2009 Pinot Noir Jack Hill Vineyard, from a site south of Occidental, is arguably the most immediate of the 2009 Pinots in this range. Dark red cherries, exotic spices, licorice and cloves all flesh out in a radiant, expressive Pinot that impresses for its accessibility. Even though the Jack Hill is quite open today, there is plenty of underlying structure to support years of positive development in bottle. A creamy, expressive finish rounds things out in style. The Jack Hill was made from fully de-stemmed fruit. (Drink between 2015-2025.) Antonio Galloni. |

WS 95 (10/2003): A thoroughly rich, plush and persistent wine loaded with plush currant and chocolaty flavors, with sage, earth, mocha and espresso scents adding to its complexity. Deeply concentrated, it nonetheless displays a remarkable sense of elegance and finesse and is deftly balanced. Best from 2005 through 2014. 350 cases made. WA 91 (12/2003): There are 350 cases of the 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon Herb Lamb Vineyard, which is performing better out of bottle than it did from cask. It reveals a singular, exotic bouquet of flowers (geraniums?) and a minty undertone intermixed with copious quantities of blueberries, cassis, and tar. Dense, rich, and full-bodied, it is a strong effort that should drink well for 10-12 years. VM 89 (6/2003): Medium ruby-red. Aromas of blueberry, cassis and tar, with floral and menthol nuances. Supple but rather backward, with game and mint notes and a strong element of chocolatey oak. Offers plenty of density, but shows the least complete flavor development of any of this producer's wines from the 2000, 2001 and 2002 vintages. |

JS 92 (6/2011): A full-bodied red with lots of character, from spices such as cinnamon to grilled nuts. Plus plenty of fruit. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long rich finish. Turns a little astringent. Give it three to five years of bottle age to soften. WA 89 (12/2010): Composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc, this dense ruby/purple-colored 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon possesses a slightly muted, restrained set of aromatics (cedar and black currants), but the wine kicks in on the palate. Medium to full-bodied with an elegant style, it is an attractive, stylish Cabernet Sauvignon that appears to be slightly over-priced. WS 89 (9/2011): Taut and tightly wound, with firm cedar, tobacco, cigar box and roasted herb flavors built around dried currant, mineral and spicy oak notes. Needs time. Decant for now. Best from 2012 through 2022. 10,300 cases made. VM 88 (5/2011): Bright ruby-red. Aromatic nose combines cherry, currant, chocolate, flowers and fresh herbs lifted by a note of spearmint oil. The juicy palate adds some tobacco and resiny spices to the mix, with a peppery quality contributing energy. The dusty, firm-edged tannins reminded me a bit of 2006, but this has better fruit. Stephen Tanzer. |

JD 92+ (4/2019): Deeper purple-colored, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Protagonist (95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Syrah, and 2% Cabernet Franc) offers a more straightforward, ripe bouquet of cassis, scorched earth, graphite, and spice. It's full-bodied, nicely concentrated, and powerful on the palate yet still stays balanced and lively, with nicely integrated acidity. It needs 2-3 years of bottle age to develop more complexity but is a beautiful wine from this team. |

2021 |
Cabernet Sauvignon |
$699 |

|
JD 98+ (12/2023): One of the greatest wines made in the vintage, as well as probably one of the most age-worthy, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon reveals a dense purple hue to go with quintessential Oakville notes of ripe black fruits, iron, black olive, walnuts, and darker chocolate, with an almost bloody, salty character that develops with time in the glass. It's a massive, dense, yet majestic Cabernet Sauvignon that has flawless balance, building yet perfectly ripe tannins, and the concentration and overall class to warrant 5-7 years of bottle age and evolve for 40+ years in cold cellars. Hats off to the MacDonald brothers for another incredible, magical wine. (Drink between 2030-2065) VM 96+ (12/2023): The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is dense and potent but also quite structured. Dark fruit, plum, graphite, incense, licorice and lavender are some of the many notes that grace the 2021. Silky, plush red cherry, mocha, rose petal and spice unfurl with time in the glass. This a decidedly mid-weight wine with firm, chalky tannins. Graeme MacDonald backed off extractions a bit in 2021, which suggests a drive towards greater freshness. This is also the first vintage made at the Mending Wall facility, which is quite a bit less cramped than at Kongsgaard, where all the previous wines were made. The 2021 saw 38 days on skins and 22 months in barrel. It is an absolutely gorgeous wine, but it is also more reticent than most vintages at this stage. (Drink between 2027-2039). Antonio Galloni. |

|
WA 97+ (12/2015): From Luc Morlet's own estate just north of St. Helena, the 2013 Morlet Estate comes across like a first-growth Pauillac. Again 100% Cabernet Sauvignon with creamy blackcurrants and blackberry fruit, some licorice, graphite, and background oak, the wine displays excellent minerality, superb fruit intensity, and a multi-dimensional mouthfeel. It should drink well for at least 25-30 years. |

WA 94 (12/2005): The 2003 Proprietary Red (86.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec, aged in 100% new Taransaud barrels) is a killer. Deep ruby/purple-colored, with a big, smoky, fragrant nose of creme de cassis, smoked meats, plum, and licorice, it boasts great intensity, rich, full-bodied, powerful flavors, decent acidity, moderate tannin, and tremendous persistence. It has put on weight since I tasted it last year out of barrel, and should drink well for 15 or more years. WS 92 (10/2006): Plump and generous, with fleshy currant, blackberry and black cherry fruit that's supple and focused. Ripe without going overboard. Finishes with a burst of sweet ripe currant and blackberry fruit and ripe tannins. Best from 2007 through 2012. 4,739 cases made. VM 91 (6/2006): Good full ruby. Black cherry, blackcurrant, dusty licorice and a whiff of herbs on the nose. Then sweet and supple but cooler than the 2004 in its fruit character, with some mint and herbal nuances. Finishes with broad tannins and a suggestion of bitter chocolate. Today this seems a bit less sweet than the 2003 merlot, but these tannins are finer. |

VM 90 (6/2011): (includes the young vines from Summa): Good deep red. Aromas of raspberry liqueur, spices and lively orange zest. Broad but with a firm edge of acidity accentuated by the wine's tart orange fruit note. Like the B. Thieriot chardonnay, this also expanded nicely in the glass. Plenty in reserve here: I'd wait a year or two for the wine's components to harmonize. Fresher than the 2008 bottling. BH 89 (10/2011): A perfumed and pretty nose speaks of essence of red pinot fruit and subtle spice hints that carry over to the delicious, generous and quite fleshy medium-bodied flavors that possess mouth coating extract, all wrapped in a long and balanced finish. This isn't overly complex at present but given the depth of underlying material present that additional complexity will arrive with a few years of bottle age. Drink 2014+ |

|
VM 91+ (6/2011): (from vines planted in 1977): Deep red. Pungent, complex aromas of cherry, crushed raspberry, black tea and orange zest. Dense and sappy, with old-viney creaminess of texture leavened by edgy acidity. The lively red fruit, floral and spice flavors are further lifted by a repeating note of orange zest on the back end. Offers very good cut but will need bottle aging to unwind. Winemaker Thomas Brown told me that light precipitation at the beginning of October perked up the fruit in this dry-farmed vineyard, but that he brought in the grapes on October 11, just before the heavier rains. This might have been even better for a few more days of hang time, but I would not be at all surprised if it merited a higher score several years from now. |

|
WA 94 (6/2008): The northern Rhone-like 2005 Heart Stone Vineyard is a blend of 44% Syrah, 33% Grenache, and 23% Mourvedre. A meaty nose with roasted Provencal herbs, cassis, blackberry, licorice, and smoke emerges from this Hermitage-styled effort. Structured and firm, it will benefit from 1-2 years of bottle age, and should evolve effortlessly for a decade or more. The bottled 2005s are all performing well. VM 92 (12/2007): Deep ruby. Room-filling bouquet of red and black fruits, Asian spices, fresh violet and lavender and suave vanillin oak. Vibrant, palate-staining raspberry and blackberry flavors deliver sweet depth, with zesty minerality adding energy. Silky tannins slowly build on the long, spicy finish. Seamless and elegant; this is more open than the Broken Stones today. WS 90 (3/2008): Offers subtlety and finesse. A charming style, with rich layers of dried currant, sage, fresh earth, mineral and light cedary oak. Holds its focus and ends with a complex aftertaste. Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2011. 500 cases made. |

WA 93 (8/2009): A blend of 38% Syrah, 36% Grenache, and 26% Mourvedre, the 2006 Heart Stone Vineyard offers up scents of flowers, lavender, black cherries, raspberries, blackberries, underbrush, and forest floor. Justin Smith uses a lot of whole clusters in his fermentation, which seems to give his wines structure as well as nuance. This is the most French-like of Saxum’s 2006s, and it comes across like a restrained, northern Rhone-like effort that is only hinting at its ultimate potential. It will benefit from 1-3 years of cellaring, and should evolve for 10-15 years. WS 93 (3/2009): Intense and powerful, with ripe, focused plum, blackberry and wild berry fruit that's shaded by pepper and nutmeg flavors. Full-bodied, dense and chewy, with pleasantly earthy tannins. Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2014. 390 cases made. VM 92 (12/2008): ( 38% syrah, 36% grenache and 26% mourvedre) Bright red. Sexy, strongly floral aromas of strawberry, black raspberry and candied flowers, with a suave Christmas spice quality. Sappy and sweet, with vivid red fruit and floral pastille flavors and a seductive overlay of cinnamon and mace. Bright minerals add lift and cut to the sappy finish. This was fermented with about 35% whole clusters. |

Sweet floral notes lead to a long, sensual finish underpinned by lively acidity. This feminine, totally sensual Pinot possesses striking overall balance and tons of finesse. The Occidental has the highest acidity of the 2010 Pinots, which should help it age gracefully over the coming years. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020. |
