Au Paradis Cabernet Sauvignon |
$159 |

VM 96 (7/2018): One of the many highlights in this range, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Au Paradis is simply fabulous. Mocha, smoke, espresso, chocolate and racy new oak wrap around a plush core of dark fruit in a Cabernet of arresting beauty and total allure. The 2014 has an explosive energy that balances some of its more flamboyant leanings to great effect. This is a stellar showing from Peter Michael. |

WA 94+ (10/2017): Composed of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Cabernet Franc, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Au Paradis has a deep garnet-purple color and nose of crushed blackcurrants, blackberries and mulberries with hints of menthol, violets, bay leaves and cloves, plus a waft of pencil shavings. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is energetic and yet tautly structured with firm, grainy tannins and a lively backbone framing the muscular fruit, finishing long and earthy. Give it 2-3 years in bottle and drink it over the next 25+. 1,620 cases were made. |

Clos Du Ciel Pinot Noir |

|
WA 94 (12/2013): Another gorgeous, perfectly balanced wine, although not quite as rich as the 2010, is the 2011 Pinot Noir Clos de Ciel. Lots of forest floor, underbrush, cola and red and black currant characteristics are present in this more evolved yet surprisingly powerful and dense 2011. Production was 530 cases, which is significantly more than in either 2009 or 2010. It should drink well for 6-7 years. VM 93 (6/2013): Vivid ruby. A heady, exotic perfume presents of candied red berries, cola, lavender and woodsmoke, with a spicy topnote. Fresh and focused but densely packed, offering sweet raspberry and cherry-cola flavors that pick up a deeper cherry pit quality with air. A powerful finish emphatically repeats the red berry note. WS 92 (9/2013): An elegant, graceful style, this is youthful, with vibrant, snappy blueberry, wild berry and anise flavors, enlivened by zesty acidity and ending with a long, persistent finish. Drink now through 2024. 530 cases made. VM 90 (2/2014): A supple, pretty wine, the 2011 Pinot Noir Clos du Ciel is laced with plum, black cherry, cola, menthol, hard candy and sweet spices. Layers of dark, racy fruit build to the textured, voluptuous finish. The Clos du Ciel is the most open and accessible of the 2011 Pinots, and should be drunk sooner rather than later. This is one of the more overt 2011 Pinots from the Fort Ross-Seaview AVA readers are likely to come across. Clos du Ciel emerges from the warmest of the three estate Pinot vineyards Peter Michael owns. The 2011 was much more impressive from barrel than in bottle. |

Clos Du Ciel Pinot Noir |

WA 98 (12/2014): The amazing 2012 Pinot Noir Clos de Ciel (575 cases) boasts a deep ruby color as well as a sweet perfume of black cherries, damp earth, forest floor, new saddle leather, and raspberries. Rich and medium to full-bodied with a floral component in addition to some tannins in the finish, the result is a slight compression and edginess to the wine as it finishes. This 2012 appears to need more time. I suspect it will hit its apogee in 7-8 years and last 25 or more. |

L’Esprit des Pavots Proprietary Blend |
$99 |

|
WA 89 (12/2003): A second wine produced from juice culled from Les Pavots lots is called L’Esprit des Pavots. There are 875 cases of the 2001, a blend of 47% Cabernet Franc, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 8% Merlot. It is no wimpish wine at 15.6% alcohol, but that is not even noticeable in this dark ruby/purple-colored offering. A big bouquet of cocoa, espresso roast, vanilla, chocolate, and ripe black currants as well as cherries is followed by a medium-bodied, supple-textured red that is best consumed over the next 7-8 years. |

WA 90 (12/2016): The second wine, culled from barrels not considered at the level required of Les Pavots, is the 2014 Proprietary Red L’Esprit des Pavots, which is a relatively large cuvee of 2,120 cases. A blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, this wine is silky, lush and approachable, with low acidity and notes of black olive tapenade intermixed with graphite, blackberry, cassis and smoke. It is full-bodied, plush and best drunk over the next 10-15 years. |

JD 94 (6/2018): From younger vines and what could be considered the entry-level Bordeaux blend of the estate, the 2015 L'Esprit des Pavots is still a gorgeous, gorgeous wine. Blackcurrants, black cherries, tobacco leaf, and cedar wood characteristics, full-bodied richness, seamless, elegant, silky tannin, no hard edges, and a blockbuster finish make for a wine that's better than most top wines. Located north of Napa Valley, in the Knights Valley AVA of Sonoma, Peter Michael utilizes the incredible talent of Frenchman Nicolas Morlet (whose brother Luc runs Morlet Estate in Napa, and was previously the winemaker at Peter Michael). These classic, traditionally made wines certainly have an old world feel/style, yet never lose their California soul. They produce two brilliant Bordeaux Blanc look-alikes, a bevy of Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs, and three Bordeaux blends. It can be a complex lineup to wrap your head around, but the cuvees show singular characters and the quality is off the charts. |

JD 94 (6/2019): Leading off the Bordeaux Blends, the 2016 L'Esprit des Pavots offers impressive amounts of black fruits, tobacco, cedarwood, coffee bean, and leafy herb-like aromas and flavors. It’s full-bodied, has a deep, layered texture, ripe tannins, and plenty of upfront, sexy fruit. It’s also incredibly complex as well as a brilliant wine. VM 92 (5/2019): The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon L'Esprit des Pavots is a dense, rich second wine that takes fruit from both Les Pavots and Au Paradis, Peter Michael's estate vineyard in Oakville. Dark cherry, plum, chocolate, new leather, licorice and spice are pushed forward in a succulent, racy wine that will drink well right out of the gate. This is the first vintage in which Les Pavots is a blend of fruit from both estate vineyards. The blend is 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Franc and 9% Petit Verdot. Antonio Galloni. WA 90 (10/2018): The 2016 L'Esprit des Pavots is a blend of 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Franc and 9% Petit Verdot. Very deep garnet-purple colored, it's scented of black cherries, warm blackberries and plums with nuances of spice box and cigar box plus a hint of potpourri. The palate is medium to full-bodied, soft, plush and juicy in the mouth, with loads of earthy sparks on the long, fruity finish. |

2009 |
Le Caprice Pinot Noir |
$129 |

|
|
WA 94 (12/2013): The 2009 Pinot Noir La Caprice is a 464-case cuvee made from field selections from Vosne-Romanee and grafted onto the low producing and yielding root stock called Riparia Gloire. Its deep ruby color is followed by a layered, rich wine that still reveals some tannin as well as loads of raspberry and black cherry fruit intermixed with hints of spring flowers and forest floor. Yields were less than one ton of fruit per acre. This impressive 2009 can be drunk now or cellared for another 10-15 years. WS 94 (7/2011): Well-structured, with a core of pure, ripe plum and blackberry fruit that's fleshy, supple and medium- to full-bodied. This is deeply concentrated and firms up nicely on the finish, where a touch of fresh earth folds in. Drink now through 2017. 510 cases made. VM 93 (6/2011): Bright ruby. Higher in pitch than the Moulin Rouge, displaying wild strawberry and raspberry along with a sexy floral nuance and an exotic note of nectarine. Shows darker berry fruit and cherry in the mouth, picking up notes of licorice and candied flowers with air. Deeply fruity but energetic pinot with excellent finishing clarity and persistent spiciness. |

Le Caprice Pinot Noir |
$119 |

|
|
WA 98 (12/2013): A spectacular effort, the 2010 Pinot Noir La Caprice is one of the most complex Pinots I have ever smelled. Resembling a great grand cru from the Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, it offers up aromas of rose petals, wild strawberries, black raspberries, forest floor and Chinese black tea. This full-bodied, rich Pinot has an undeniable Cote de Nuits personality as well as an amazing finish. Production of this profound Pinot was 730 cases. It should drink well for 10+ years. WS 95 (8/2012): Ripe and generous, with plush, rich blackberry and wild berry fruit that's pure and focused, gaining depth and nuance and ending with a long, persistent finish, where this picks up a touch of smoky oak. Drink now through 2022. 730 cases made. VM 91 (5/2012): Bright ruby-red. Fresh raspberry and cherry aromas are complicated by star anise, cinnamon and rose oil. Fleshy and smooth on entry, then tighter in the mid-palate, offering tangy red fruit flavors and a hint of bitter chocolate. Shows a suave floral quality on the finish, which clings with impressive tenacity. |

2009 |
Ma Danseuse Pinot Noir |
$99 |

|
|
WA 95 (12/2013): From a north-facing parcel, the young 2009 Pinot Noir Ma Danseuse is less evolved than either the 2010 or 2011, but that has more to do with the vintage style than anything else. It displays abundant fruit, sassafras, raspberry, black currant and meaty aromas intermixed with a notion of bouquet garni. Dense, medium to full-bodied, youthful and vibrant, it will benefit from another 1-2 years of bottle age, and keep for a decade. WS 95 (7/2011): Fragrant wilted rose and black cherry scents are complex, vibrant, elegant and deeply perfumed in this medium-bodied red, with touches of rich wild berry and raspberry. Ends with a delicate, minerally aftertaste that lingers with snappy berry notes. Drink now through 2017. 530 cases made. VM 94+ (2/2012): The 2009 Pinot Noir Ma Danseuse PMW Estate bursts from the glass with heady scents of dark cherries, baking spices and flowers. This is a more immediate, open style than the Caprice. Layers of expressive, perfumed fruit caress the palate in this flashy, totally gorgeous Pinot. The clones originate from two of the most famous vineyards in the Cote de Nuits. VM 94 (6/2011): Glass-staining ruby. A complex, fragrant bouquet evokes red berries, gingerbread and potpourri. Fine-grained and very precise on the palate, offering subtly sweet strawberry and raspberry flavors and slow-building spice and rose pastille qualities. Zesty minerality adds cut and focus to the very long, juicy, floral-dominated finish. This carries 15.1% alcohol but there's no way I'd have guessed that. |

WA 100 (12/2013): Ruby-red. Explosively perfumed aromas of red and dark berries, potpourri and musky underbrush. Penetrating and bright on the palate, offering sweet but sharply focused raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and an exotic floral pastille quality. A suave, silky midweight that shows Outstanding sweetness and precision on the long finish. Morlet describes this wine as "more intellectual than the Le Caprice." WS 93 (8/2012): Stylish and elegant, with a sophisticated mix of plum, raspberry, spice and savory herb flavors. Very complete, delicate and balanced, with a long, soothing finish. Drink now through 2022. 940 cases made. VM 92 (5/2012): Ruby-red. Morlet describes this wine as "more intellectual than the Le Caprice." |

$229 |

|
WA 100 (12/2014): The compelling 2012 Pinot Noir Ma Danseuse (1,480 cases) is even better than the 2013. Notes of lead pencil shavings, DRC-like forest floor, black raspberry, blackcurrant, Asian plum sauce, rose petal and sweet cherry characteristics are found in this spectacular, multidimensional, prodigious Pinot Noir that should drink well for 10-15+ years. The clonal material probably came from one of the DRC vineyards, so it is not surprising that. in this cool climate, with the great fruit purity California can achieve, there is a DRC-like resemblance. JS 94 (3/2015): Love the blueberries, raspberries and lemons on the nose, with hints of mussel shell. Full body with a solid core of fruit and a long, beautiful finish. A tangy, terracotta character. It goes and goes. Drink or hold. VM 93 (5/2014): Bright ruby. Intensely perfumed aromas of raspberry liqueur, Asian spices and rose pastille, with a zesty mineral topnote. Pure and silky in texture, offering sweet red fruit and spicecake flavors that put on weight with air. Smoothly integrated acidity provides focus and lift to the finish, which is firmed by smooth tannins that fade quickly into the fruit. WS 91 (9/2014): Intense and direct, with a tight, firm mix of red and dark berry, red and black licorice and hints of violet and boysenberry on the finish. Drink now through 2022. 1,490 cases made. |

|
JD 96 (6/2018): From vines planted in 1990, the 2016 Chardonnay Belle- Côte is a field selection that includes six different clones (all imported from Burgundy). It has a very classic, Burgundian style in its caramelized citrus, toasted bread, marzipan, and spice-driven aromas and flavors. This beauty offers more and more clean minerality and oyster shell characteristics with time in the glass, is incredibly pure and finesse-oriented, and has beautiful depth and richness. It’s a stunner. |

L’Apres Midi Sauvignon Blanc |

|
WA 94 (10/2016): Two terrific whites that Peter Michael should get more recognition for are the Sauvignon Blanc L’Après-Midi and the equal-parts Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon called Coeur à Coeur. The 2015 Sauvignon Blanc L’Apres-Midi, which is 88% Sauvignon Blanc and 12% Semillon is certainly one of California’s most exciting Sauvignons, with a texture of Chardonnay and exotic mango, honeysuckle, ripe melon and wet-rock scented fragrance, medium to full body, and striking precision and vibrancy. This is a terrific wine, as it has been in almost every vintage they have produced. Drink: now-2020. |

|
|
JD 93 (6/2018): Bottled and released last year, the 2016 L'Apres-Midi is 86% Sauvignon Blanc and the rest Semillon vinified and aged in almost all neutral barrels. Juicy citrus, white flowers, lemon, honey, and some underbrush, earthy notes all flow to a fresh, lively, yet textured Sauvignon that has beautiful balance and purity. Classic, elegant, and lengthy, it’s going to keep like a great white from the Graves region of Bordeaux. |

VM 92 (5/2013): Pale yellow. Deeply pitched aromas of pear, white flowers, anise and smoky minerals. Penetrating and pure, with intense orchard and citrus fruit flavors nicely framed by bright acidity. Nervy and tight in the middle, with a honeyed nuance coming up with air. Shows very good clarity and power on the long, mineral-drenched finish. This chardonnay is carrying 15.2% alcohol but it doesn't show. Stephen Tanzer. |

Ma Belle-Fille Chardonnay |
$85 |

|
|
WA 97 (2/2023): Matured for 12 months in about 40% new French oak, the 2020 Chardonnay Ma Belle Fille gains aromatic intensity as it spends time in the glass, segueing from matchstick, nutmeg and panna cotta to wafts of honey, apricot, lilac and lemon peel. Medium-bodied and ultra silky, it expands in the mouth from bright citrus to more savory, honeyed fruits. It offers generous, juicy acidity and a very long, ethereal finish. Still flaunting a touch of new-oak character, it will benefit from a couple years in bottle or some time in the decanter. JD 97 (8/2022): The nose of the 2020 Chardonnay Ma Belle-Fille is layered with fresh and citrus tones, with lime blossom, white flowers, and lemon pith. The mouthfeel is stony and has more tension while still having a classic viscous feel. VM 88 (1/2022): The 2020 Chardonnay Ma Belle Fille is marked by bright acids and a lack of overall depth. The signatures of Ma Belle Fille just aren't developed, and that leaves the wine feeling quite aggressive. In 2020, Ma Belle Fille includes lots that would have typically been used for the Point Rouge. Antonio Galloni. |
