WA 94 (10/2008): The deep ruby/purple-tinged 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Barbe Rac reveals a rich, sumptuous perfume of root vegetables, blackberries, cassis, melted licorice, incense, and spice. Chapoutier’s single vineyard Chateauneuf du Papes represent two different areas of the appellation, with the Barbe Rac coming from the western corridor, not far from the Plateau of Mont-Redon. Chapoutier has adjusted the manner in which he ages these cuvees, as they are now completely aged in tank. It is incredibly full-bodied for a 2006, with superb concentration as well as excellent length and purity. Drink this beauty over the next 15+ years. Both the Barbe Rac and Croix de Bois are 100% Grenache. WS 94 (6/2009): A very beguiling, stylish, perfumy style, with incense, tea, sandalwood, red cherry and red currant fruit allied to a fine-grained texture. Supersilky and extremely long, with a lingering mineral- and shiso leaf¿tinged finish that wont quit. Drink now through 2025. 583 cases made. VM 89+ (2/2009): Bright red. Brooding, slow-to-open bouquet of cherry, dark berries and tobacco. Meaty and powerful, with chewy dark fruit flavors and dusty tannins. Far more difficult to read today than the Croix de Bois. This needs time to stretch out but there's clearly serious material here. |

WA 98 (10/2009): The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Barbe Rac, which comes from the western part of the appellation from a vineyard planted in 1901 and 1902, is, like the Croix de Bois, 100% Grenache aged totally in cement tanks. It boasts a dense purple color along with a sumptuous nose of black raspberries, black currants, incense, camphor, licorice, and garrigue. Full-bodied, voluptuously-textured, exuberant, rich, and pure with stunning depth and concentration, it can be drunk young or cellared for 15-20 years. Chapoutier’s holdings in Chateauneuf du Pape continue to grow as he purchased the Bois Dauphin estate recently. He now owns 100 acres (all planted with Grenache) in the appellation (all of them biodynamically farmed). WS 96 (5/2010): This belies the lush fruit of the vintage—for now. Supersilky and perfumy, delivering gorgeous blackberry, Lapsang souchong tea, sandalwood and shiso leaf notes that all glide along fine-grained tannins, with a core of dark plum and blackberry fruit in reserve. Seamless and pure. Should blossom in the cellar. Best from 2012 through 2025. 665 cases made. JLL ***** (11/2008): Matt hued dark red robe; yeasty, chicken stock aroma that has a sweet interior - it is unusual but rich - where does that smell of rice pudding come from?? Sealed, black fruits on the palate, with the vintage richness well present. This runs on nice and consecutively, gains a little impact as it goes. A savoury wine with lots of tasty appeal. Its tannins and some oak are curved into its last stage. Decant this. From 2011. VM 90 (1/2010): Bright ruby. Seductive bouquet of ripe red berries, roasted herbs and potpourri. Fleshy and deeply concentrated, offering slightly warm raspberry and cherry compote flavors with a hint of smoke. Creamy on the finish, delivering a serious wallop of rich red fruit and a bit of heat. Impressive for its power but this will be a tough match at the table. |

WS 93 (6/2009): Very pure and driven, with a great beam of macerated red currant fruit laced with licorice, raspberry, bittersweet cocoa and incense notes that extend through the long, mouthwatering finish. Very rich, but offers admirable precision. Drink now through 2022. 861 cases made. WA 92 (10/2008): The 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Croix de Bois reveals an intense Provencal herb character as well as peppery, roasted meat, garrigue, and kirsch liqueur notes, full body, good richness, and a long finish. Chapoutier’s single vineyard Chateauneuf du Papes represent two different areas of the appellation, with the Croix de Bois coming from the eastern sector in the Bedarrides region. Chapoutier has adjusted the manner in which he ages these cuvees, as they are now completely aged in tank. Yields for this offering (made from 100+-year-old Grenache vines in the Galets Roulets area) are typically less than .5 tons of fruit per acre. Both the Barbe Rac and Croix de Bois are 100% Grenache. VM 92 (2/2009): Bright red. Highly perfumed nose offers raspberry, lavender, pungent herbs and minerals. Enticingly fresh and sweet, with deep but lively red berry preserve flavors and tangy minerality. With its excellent finishing lift and persistence, this reminded me a lot of pinot noir. |

WA 97 (12/2014): While I loved Michel's 2012 Cote Rotie la Mordoree from barrel, it blew me away from bottle, and I think bares more than a passing resemblance to his 1991. About as elegant and seamless as they come, it exhibits incredible notes of violets, peppery spice, spring flowers, rose petal and darker berry fruit. This is followed by a full-bodied, sweetly fruited, expansive Cote Rotie that's perfectly balanced, has beautiful mid-palate density, and ultra-fine tannin that emerge on the finish. It's a blockbuster effort to drink over the coming two decades. JLL ***[*] (11/2013): (From cask) Dark colour. Dense bouquet, still under restraint, a rather muscular ensemble, with airs of nuts, black raisin, macerated black fruits - the bouquet has weight. The palate works well: it is nicely packed, also direct, takes on gummy tannins towards the finish. The shape is one of a rectangle more than a sphere, and covers the palate across and along well, sustains via an elegant juice, a coulis style fruit. Good, has lots of potential. It is a bit roasted on the aftertaste. From 2016. VM 92-94 (3/2014): Inky ruby. Sexy, intensely perfumed aromas of blackberry, cherry-cola and violet, with allspice, cola and olive nuances building with air. Sweet and penetrating in the mouth, showing a seamless texture and vibrant dark berry compote and violet pastille flavors. Finishes with excellent energy and focus, leaving cola and smoky mineral notes behind. |

VM 93 (3/2013): Inky purple. Ripe, spice-tinged black and blue fruits on the nose and palate. Picks up smokiness and sweetness with air and shows a suave blend of richness and vivacity. Tannins make a late appearance and melt quickly into the fruit. Finishes with excellent clarity and thrust, leaving allspice and candied blueberry notes behind. Josh Raynolds. |

JD 95 (12/2022): Lastly, the 2020 Crozes Ermitage Les Varonniers comes from a cooler, granite terroir just beside Hermitage. All destemmed Syrah brought up in 20% new French oak, it's slightly tight and closed aromatically yet has solid purity in its darker, cassis and currant-like fruit as well as truffly earth and gunpowder nuances. This ripe, powerful, structured Crozes has all the right stuff, yet it might take a decade to hit maturity. The alcohol here is a sound 13.5% with a pH of 3.8. It's most likely the Crozes of the vintage and is a brilliant wine readers will love to have in the cellar. |

WA 98 (9/2015): Showing similar to last year, the 2012 Ermitage le Meal is a blockbuster that's about as voluptuous and sexy as Hermitage gets. Loaded with cassis, black raspberry, leather, dried violets and wild herbs, this beauty is full-bodied, has tons of sweet tannin and brilliant purity of fruit. Given its wealth of material, low acidity and incredible texture, it should drink well all of its life. WS 96 (4/2015): A nice bass line plays here, featuring dark currant, fig and blackberry confiture notes that have melded already with a broad swath of warm charcoal and ganache. Impressive, loamy grip holds the finish, though this will needs a few years to stretch out fully. Best from 2018 through 2030. 40 cases imported. VM 95 (2/2015): Dark purple. A highly perfumed, complex bouquet evokes ripe cherry and raspberry, along with complicating notes of candied flowers, incense and Indian spices. Sappy and expressive, with intense black raspberry and floral pastille flavors underscored by juicy acidity. Shows superb focus and lift on the finish, which lingers with Outstanding tenacity; suave, supple tannins barely peak through the wine's vibrant fruit. |

JD 98+ (12/2022): Another wine that flirts with perfection, the 2020 Ermitage Le Méal comes from the steep, south-facing slope right in the heart of Hermitage hill. All destemmed and brought up in the standard 20% new barrels and demi-muids, it has a more tight, straight, almost reserved profile than usual yet doesn't lack for density, mid-palate depth, structure, and concentration. Blackberries, redcurrants, spice, dried flowers, and loamy earth all define the aromatics, and it's full-bodied, has ripe, polished tannins, and a great finish. It needs to be forgotten for at least 5-7 years but will evolve for three decades. |

WA 98+ (2/2008): The biggest production cuvee, the 2005 Ermitage Le Pavillon (1,067 cases in this vintage) has a dense purple color, the classic acacia flower, graphite-based, smoky creme de cassis nose with a tremendous intensity and a full-bodied power and richness that is awesome. These are monumental wines, and when you think that this wine, much like most of its siblings, is made from yields of 12-18 hectoliters per hectare, the explanation for its concentration and extraordinary expression of terroir is obvious. WS 96 (7/2008): Very focused, with grippy but streamlined tannins carrying dark currant, plum, coffee, mocha and mineral notes through the long, zesty finish filled with wild berry and briar patch. This should flesh out nicely in the cellar, as there's some real serious grip. Best from 2010 through 2025. 1,067 cases made. VM 93+ (2/2008): Inky ruby. Deep, brooding and initially inscrutable, with uncannily concentrated blackberry and cassis scents. Rich dark fruit preserve flavors seem almost solid, but there's wonderful vivacity too. Picks up supple tannins on the finish, which leaves a tattoo of black and blue fruits on the palate. Extremely primary right now. |

JD 100 (12/2022): The 2020 Ermitage Le Pavillon is pure gold, and Hermitage doesn't get any better. Incredible aromatics of cassis, graphite, burning embers, and crushed stone all emerge from this beauty. Stunningly proportioned and incredibly pure, it's full-bodied, concentrated, and powerful, but as with all great vintages of this cuvée, it's going to demand bottle age. While Les Greffieux and Le Méal bring much more opulence, this is the powerhouse, long-distance candidate in the lineup. It's an incredible effort. Give bottles upwards of a decade in the cellar, and it should evolve effortlessly over the following 30-40 years. WA 96-98 (1/2022): Chapoutier's 2020 Ermitage le Pavillon shows a more chiseled, defined structure than the other 2020s, suggesting greater potential longevity. This full-bodied effort is loaded with purple raspberries and cassis, but it remains tight and taut, showing fascinating tension and elegance allied to great depth and length. Impressive! |

WA 100 (8/2014): An incredible wine that tops out on my scale, the 2006 Ermitage Les Greffieux is massively concentrated and rich, with incredible aromas and flavors of black fruits, roasted herbs, tar, licorice and beef blood. Without a doubt the most concentrated, powerful wine in the lineup, it has the fruit and texture to make your eyes roll back in your head, but has the depth, concentration and structure to evolve for decades. From hot, dry year, I’ve no idea what makes this vintage so special here, but this incredible effort possesses a singular, unique profile, and is off-the-charts. Don’t miss it! VM 95 (1/2009): Opaque purple. Hugely aromatic, alluring bouquet of red berry preserves, violet, rose, smoked meat, minerals and black pepper. Saturates the palate with deep black raspberry and kirsch flavors, picking up tangy mineral and spice character with air. Utterly seamless Hermitage with outstanding finishing lift and precision. Josh Raynolds. WS 95 (6/2009): Packed, almost like a 2005, with gorgeous boysenberry and blackberry confiture notes laid over loam, pastis, violet and black licorice. The long, fleshy finish is dense but seamless. Terrific purity. Best from 2010 through 2025. 305 cases made. |

WA 97 (12/2014): A wine I've been lucky enough to have multiple times recently, the 2012 Ermitage les Greffieux is a full-bodied, deeply fruited, concentrated and blockbuster effort that's stays elegant, polished and balanced. Exhibiting incredible amounts of bloody meat, olive tapenade, campfire and sweet, expansive fruit, it needs 4-5 years in the cellar, and will drink nicely through 2034. VM 93-95 (3/2014): Dark purple. Smoky blackberry and blueberry on the highly perfumed nose, with sexy oak spice and floral notes adding complexity. Densely packed dark berry preserve flavors pick up a candied licorice quality with air, along with hints of smoky bacon and black tea. Coats the palate without coming off as heavy, finishing with firm mineral cut and slow-building tannins. JLL **** (11/2013): (From cask) Sombre, quite dark robe. Smoky, mineral-clipped, mysterious nose, with oak grilling in it. It has the spine of western zones, its depth is appealing, and nothing has been overdone. The palate is finely composed, the fruit clear and dark, spurred on by quiet acidity with a drift of late violet. It has mineral in its veins, delivers a message with a glint, iron-style cut, will take its time. Burgundy meets Hermitage here. This will gain slowly over time. From 2017. |

VM 94 (3/2016): Deep ruby. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes fresh red and dark berries, Indian spices, candied violet and incense, lifted by a bright mineral quality. Silky, sweet and energetic on the palate, offering vibrant black raspberry, floral pastille and spicecake flavors that spread out and gain weight with air. Manages to be both powerful and graceful, offering superb back-end punch and velvety tannins that shape the floral finish. Josh Raynolds. |

JD 98+ (12/2022): More game, bacon fat, truffly earth, and both red and black fruits emerge from the 2020 Ermitage Les Greffieux, another deep, rich, incredibly concentrated wine from this estate. Coming from the more sedimentary soils at the base of Hermitage, destemmed and aged in 20% new oak, this full-bodied, monster of a wine has sweet, velvety tannins, a huge mid-palate, and a gorgeous finish. This is up there with the finest vintages of this cuvée I've tasted. Give bottles 5-7 years, count yourself lucky, and enjoy over the following 20-25 years. |

WA 99+ (2/2008): Lastly, from the very dome of the granite hill of Ermitage is the 2005 Ermitage l’Ermite. An extraordinarily powerful wine that probably needs 10-15 years in the bottle (last year I thought 20 was probably conservative), this is a 100-year wine and probably best appreciated by our descendants rather than anyone currently over the age of 30. Dense purple to the rim, with notes of crushed rock, charcoal, roasted meats, and enormous quantities of blue and black fruits, this wine is almost painfully rich and thick, with mouthsearing levels of tannin and zesty acidity. Monumental! Anticipated maturity: 2020-2080. |

WA 100 (12/2015): The wine of the vintage (and I’ll include all the wines of the northern Rhône, red and white in that grouping) is the 2014 Ermitage l’Ermite Blanc. Always made from 100% Marsanne that comes from the granite soils of the l’Hermite lieu-dit, it was aged 11 months in 25% new demi-muids before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Its medium-gold color is followed by a heavenly bouquet of liquid rock, hazelnut, caramelized pineapples, stone fruits and quince. Thick, unctuous, full-bodied, thrillingly pure and laser focused with a dry, blockbuster finish that just won’t quit, it needs 2-3 years of cellaring and will drink nicely over the following three or more decades. WS 97 (5/2017): Rich but racy, with a core of melon, white peach and yellow apple fruit streaming through, carried by a mouthwatering quinine note. The finish is gilded with honeysuckle and jasmine details, giving this lift and brightness. A light salted butter accent at the end brings you back for more. Drink now through 2030. 12 cases imported. |

JD 100 (2/2022): I was blown away by the 2020 Ermitage Le Méal Blanc, which is certainly the finest vintage of this cuvée I’ve tasted. From the pure south-facing Méal lieu-dit (which is the warmest terroir on Hermitage), it was vinified and aged 70% demi-muids (10% new) and 30% in stainless steel. Straight-up heavenly notes of white currants, powdered rock, celery seed, honeysuckle, and toasted almonds all define the bouquet, and it’s full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, with that rare mix of richness and freshness. Hermitage Blanc doesn’t get any better. I love this today, yet it will certainly benefit from a year or two of bottle age, drink well for 3-5 years, at which point, it’s probably best to wait until a solid 15 years after the vintage. |
