Special Offer on 2020 Bordeaux Futures

Inventory updated: Fri, Jun 18, 2021 04:02 PM cst

The time for the latest Bordeaux futures campaign is upon us, and on offer is the exciting 2020 vintage. As usual we will be offering all the usual suspects, and I would urge you to get your wish lists early, as it is looking increasingly likely that smaller quantities will be available in this campaign than were on offer last year.

Unfortunately, due to Covid we were not able to travel to Bordeaux to taste the wines again this year, though we have had some samples sent through to us again by some of the more industrious chateaux.

The weather:

As normal, the weather set the tone for the season, and the style of the 2020s perfectly reflect the vintage. There was a substantial amount of rain over the preceding winter, which turned out to be a blessing later in the season, and relatively warm temperatures over the winter and into early spring led to a very early bud break. However, humidity and rainfall levels were quite high in the spring which caused some rather intense disease pressure in the form of mildew, and this led to further issues when the mercury dropped to below freezing as the frost threat was magnified. Fortunately, damage from these twin threats wasn’t too severe (though it did vary from chateau to chateau and even parcel to parcel), and by the time flowering occurred, 15 days ahead of a normal schedule, conditions were warmer, drier and much more even – and this set the tone for the rest of the summer.

...

From mid-June onwards there was very little rain, and drought conditions quickly set in – in fact, July and August were among the driest summer months on record, with roughly 60% less rain than an average year. There were a couple of minor heat spikes, though nothing unmanageable, but the biggest issue was the lack of rain. Those vines that were older and with deeper roots, or those that were growing in more clay or limestone-heavy soils, were the fortunate ones as they suffered less hydric stress than younger vines or those on better-draining, gravel soils. Thankfully, there was some respite at the end of August when some rains came to relieve the stressed vines, and this enabled the ripening process to continue in a more normal fashion.

Further heat into September, combined with windy conditions, caused the grapes to shrink quite a bit and for malic acid levels to begin to drop off, and chateaux had to move fast to pick at optimum ripeness before acidity levels dropped too much, and before the weather cooled and more significant rain arrived (which it did at the end of September). Harvests, as a result, started very early for all varietals and were done quickly and efficiently.

The wines:

All grapes in 2020 were smaller than normal due to the dry conditions, and subsequently the juice is very concentrated and the ratio of skins to juice is very high. Vinification had to be very gentle so as not to over-extract and produce jammy, excessively concentrated wines and to avoid producing wines that were too harshly tannic – though winemakers are becoming used to this practice. The reds tend towards the muscular side of the spectrum with amazing intensity, deep tannic structures, very good freshness and wildly pungent aromatics. The dry whites are deeply intense and have very good freshness due to the very early harvest that began around August 25th. Wines of both colors appear to have exceptional balance, and therefore should age very successfully for the long-haul. Sauternes and Barsac did struggle for a long time as the humidity levels were not sufficiently high in the fall for botrytis to form as it normally does, though it eventually did arrive but only once the grapes had shrunk considerably due to the heat and dryness. The resulting sweet wines are very concentrated, and care will have to be taken to select those wines with enough acidity to age well.

One of the real skills that winemakers in Bordeaux (and in other regions) have learned over the past ten years or so is how to manage the quality of the tannins in their reds. Often this is a result of them seeing warm, dry vintages that produce these smaller berries with thicker skins, but it is also a response to a change in attitude from the consumer towards wines that can be drunk at an earlier stage – though they still need to make wines that can age for just as long as the best have always been able to. This means being able to ensure that the tannin levels in the reds remain the same (or are even higher than they used to be) but that they re much better integrated into the juice and appear smooth, ripe and supple without assaulting your mouth when you taste. I feel like the 2018 vintage was a real turning point for the Bordelais from this perspective, and I am sure that with each passing vintage they become more adept at managing the tannins and producing wines that are pleasing to more of their target audience and for a longer period of time. I, for one, applaud these advances.

To summarize:

2020 is a very successful vintage for many producers, though this is not the case for everyone throughout the region (as it was in 2019) – and of course it is the superior terroirs that fared the best. It would appear to be one where some chateaux suffered more than others form the drought conditions, but all the noises coming out of Bordeaux from producers to negociants to consultant winemakers is that it is, overall, one that will stand the test of time – we finally have a trio of superb vintages together, the first time we’ve had this since 1988, 1989 and 1990.

The style of the wines from 2020 is characterized by the weather, as it often is. A wet winter and spring loaded the soils with moisture, though high humidity during the spring caused disease pressure which without doubt affected yields. A hot, dry period from mid-June through mid-August then followed, which concentrated (shrunk) the grapes and again reduced yields – though the vines were saved, particularly in water-retaining clay or limestone-based soils, by the rains that fell earlier in the season. Welcome rain towards the end of August refreshed the vines, though further hot conditions in September meant that winemakers had to be careful not to pick too late and venture into overripeness. The final wines have wonderful aromatics and fruit concentration, along with well-rounded tannic structures and very good balancing acidity, and added to this are relatively low alcohol levels – quite an achievement in this warm vintage. For us, a truly incredible vintage is one where great wines are made at all levels and amazing quality can be found at lesser chateaux; this would appear not necessarily to be the case in 2020, though I don’t think there is any doubt that the top chateaux made some simply remarkable bottlings that will find their place among the pantheon of their greatest-ever.
