BH 93 (10/2005): Big, strapping, explosive aromas of black fruit, earth and notes of blueberries all trimmed in a touch of wood toast lead to sappy, full-bodied, rich, wonderfully intense, powerfully structured flavors that go on and on. Exceptionally dense for the vintage with dusty structure and superb balance which should permit it to age for years. Consistent notes. Drink 2010+. VM 93 (4/2004): Saturated ruby-tinged red. Complex aromas of black fruits, mocha and underbrush. Sweet, dense and sappy, with a deep core of spicy fruit. Seems less closed today than most of Roumier's other 2001s owing to its absence of hard edges. But this very serious, thick wine really needs five or six years of bottle aging and should last well. Finishes with terrific persistence. WS 92 (5/2004): Wonderful, both structured and rich, with wild berries, raspberries and black cherries. Full-bodied and tannic, but approachable, as the tannins are well-integrated. Wet earth and mineral complexity on the lingering finish. Best from 2006 through 2012. 500 cases made. WA 89-91 (6/2003): The medium-bodied, medium to dark ruby-colored 2001 Bonnes Mares is an Outstanding wine. It explodes from the glass with candied black fruit aromas and slathers the palate with its deep, suave, violet-laced jammy blackberries. Armed with first-rate depth of fruit, this friendly, silky-textured offering displays a long finish packed with ripe tannin enveloped in black cherries. Projected maturity: now-2010. |

VM 96 (9/2018): The 2002 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is a wine that I have met for five years. Examining my previous note, this seems to have meliorated in recent years, displaying outstanding transparency on the nose, more mineralite than the 2002 Les Cras poured alongside (also blind). Perhaps there is a little more black fruit here than I was expecting. The palate is medium-bodied with wonderful structure: filigree tannin, pitch-perfect acidity and superb tension from start to finish. There is a hint of balsamic towards the finish that I remarked upon a few years ago, but overall this is a wonderful Bonnes-Mares that unfurls with each passing moment in the glass. Tasted at the Roumier vertical in Hong Kong. Neal Martin. BH 95 (4/2007): The nose hasn't budged an inch since my original review in-bottle review and rests entirely in the red fruit spectrum and rather than spice, there is an intense floral and violet quality followed by detailed, ultra pure and tautly muscular flavors that deliver real punch and a lovely minerality on the incredibly long backend. A complete and seamless wine of enormous complexity and considerable underlying reserve plus enough structure for at least three plus decades of life. A great effort that is even better than I originally thought it could be from cask and because it appears to be evolving at a snail's pace, I have extended my initial suggested drinking window accordingly. WS 97 (6/2005): A beautiful red, dense and broad, with concentrated black cherry, plum and mineral flavors. Shows an old-vine richness and is backed by a firm structure, with ripe, fine-grained tannins. Fine length. Best from 2012 through 2025. 500 cases made. |

VM 84 (6/2020): The 2004 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru offers light, smudged mulberry and decayed leaf scents on a nose that pales against Christophe Roumier’s other vintages. There is something quite Oriental about the aromas, (hoisin emerges with time) but also the greenness that I remember when I first tasted it from barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannins. Quite a hollow Bonnes-Mares, to be frank, ending in a severely attenuated and raw finish. Tasted at Sarah Marsh’s 2003/2004 tasting in London. Neal Martin. BH 90 (4/2007): A discreet hint of wood spice frames a potent mix of violet, red and black fruits, earth, herb aromas and hints of game that give way to textured, sappy, firm and intense flavors that are both serious and firmly structured. This will require time to come around though there is reasonably good phenolic ripeness and, in the context of the vintage, solid finishing power and pop. Drink 2012+. |

VM 93+ (4/2009): Medium red. Knockout nose combines pungent raspberry, peony and minerals. Enters the mouth silky, then explodes on the back half with raspberry, minerals, black pepper and spices. Classic chewy Bonnes-Mares with Outstanding clarity of flavor, powerful tannic spine and impressive length. This is tough going today but should be superb in about ten years-and, like the Amoureuses, it may eventually merit an even higher rating. BH 93 (1/2009): A broad-based nose combines both upper and lower register fruit aromas, particularly blue berry as well as notes of crushed herb, violet, wet stone, anise, clove, earth and underbrush, most of which can also be found on the rich, full and very serious big-bodied and tautly muscular flavors supported by plenty of dry extract and superb length. As it usually is, this is a notably powerful wine and while it's bigger and weightier than the Amoureuses, it's naturally less fine and elegant. These two wines are qualitative equals in 2006 but their respective personalities are radically different. Drink 2016+. |

WA 98+ (4/2012): Roumier’s 2009 Bonnes-Mares is without question one of the wines of the vintage. Firm yet beautifully integrated tannins provide the backdrop for the highly nuanced, expressive aromas and flavors that emerge from the glass. All the elements are in the right place in this extraordinary, moving wine. At times the Bonnes-Mares comes across as very powerful, at other times it is quite sensual. In other words, it is pure magic in the glass. Burgundy fans will flock to the Musigny because of its rarity but there is a very real possibility that the Bonnes-Mares will outshine it over time. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039. WS 98 (6/2012): Complex, fragrant aromas of sandalwood, jasmine and black cherry, with flavors to match, converge in this tightly grained, muscular red. Detailed and pure, showing balance and energy. The lingering finish promises the full potential, leading to a long sweet fruit and mineral aftertaste. Best from 2016 through 2036. 0105 cases imported. BH 96 (1/2012): This is also remarkably fresh with very ripe but not over ripe aromas of cassis, spice, stone and raspberry liqueur. There is a palpable sense of energy running through the rich, powerful and brooding broad-shouldered flavors that benefit from a huge dollop of dry extract that pushes the very firm tannic spine to the background on the explosive and youthfully austere finish that possesses genuinely Outstanding length. I very much like the balance here and this should age effortlessly for decades. Drink: 2027+ VM 95+ (4/2012): Bright medium red. Distinctly blacker on the nose than the Amoureuses, offering scents of blackberry, blueberry and peony. Wonderfully sweet and energetic on the palate, showing terrific stuffing but coming across as tightly coiled today. At once creamy and structured for long aging. Most impressive today on the firmly tannic, palate-staining finish. Roumier compared this to the 1990 version but says this one has firmer tannins. A great and long-lived wine in the making. |

BH 95 (1/2014): ( from a 1.5 ha parcel that is roughly divided in .90 ha of terres rouges and .60 ha of terres blanches, the latter of which has the slightly older vines; in 2011 the blend is 55% terres blanches and 45% terres rouges.) This is also brilliantly perfumed if not quite as elegant as the Amoureuses with its broad ranging nose of earth, red currant, plum liqueur and lovely floral notes. There is a firm minerality to the remarkably rich, powerful and concentrated big-bodied flavors that possess both excellent volume and first-rate punch on the hugely long and youthfully austere finish. This is a stunner of a wine that will need pretty much all of 15 years, and perhaps even 20, to arrive at its full majority. Drink 2028+. WS 95 (8/2014): This seductive red offers black cherry, sandalwood and floral aromas and flavors balanced on a rich texture. Dense, featuring lively acidity, with well-integrated tannins providing support on the long and concentrated finish. Best from 2017 through 2030. 70 cases imported. VM 94+ (3/2014): Good dark red. Musky, lively aromas of raspberry, cherry liqueur and bitter chocolate. Silky red berry, red cherry and brown spice flavors are leavened by penetrating acidity, with a hint of woodsmoke adding complexity. Very sappy grand cru with good medicinal reserve; a bit compact today. This is darker in its fruit quality than the foregoing samples and the solid tannins are nobler. Very long on the aftertaste. WA 90 (11/2014): Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. Christophe Roumier’s 2011 Bonnes-Mares comes across a little lean on the nose, although there is fine delineation – distinct marine scents emerging with time while there is just a touch of reduction. The palate is medium-bodied and quite masculine for a Bonnes-Mares. There is more reserve compared to its peers, but it is undeniably succinctly focused with an abiding sense of symmetry on the finish. Excellent, but at the moment it feels rugged for a Bonnes-Mares. I suspect that it will improve with 3-4 years in bottle. |

BH 95 (1/2016): (from several parcels totaling 1.5 ha that are roughly divided between .90 ha of terres rouges and .60 ha of terres blanches, the latter of which has the slightly older vines; in 2013 the final blend is approximately 55% terres blanches and 45% terres rouges.) This is quite floral with plenty of earth and assorted spice elements adding interest to the very fresh mix of green tea and red and dark berry fruit scents. There is outstanding power and concentration to the broad-shouldered flavors that possess a robust mouth feel and ample minerality, all wrapped in a moderately austere and hugely long finish. This is a big, indeed even opulent but balanced wine that is clearly built for longer-term cellaring. Drink 2030+. WS 95 (5/2016): This is all about finesse, with the racy profile and silky texture setting the stage for cherry, bilberry and mineral flavors. Sleek and well-integrated at this stage, yet with dense, ripe tannins that need to be absorbed. Builds to a long, ethereal aftertaste. Best from 2019 through 2035. 65 cases imported. VM 94+ (3/2016): Bright medium red. Knockout high-pitched aromas of red berries, peony and orange peel. Boasts compelling subtle density and sharp definition to its taut flavors of blackberry, violet, licorice, spices and minerals. In its juicy sappiness, this is like chewing on a ripe cherry. A classic Bonnes-Mares, offering superb volume without any undue weight. And an outstanding example of what phenolically ripe fruit could make in this cool vintage. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 96 (1/2018): (from several parcels totaling 1.5 ha that are roughly divided between .90 ha of terres rouges and .60 ha of terres blanches, though these totals changed as of 2016.) An overtly spicy and floral-scented nose reveals additional notes of plum, cassis, orange pekoe tea and plenty of earth. The rich, bold, powerful and firmly muscular large-scaled flavors possess superb mid-palate concentration where the abundant dry extract also buffers the presently unyielding tannic backbone on the massively long finish. This is, simply put, spectacular and about the only nit is a discreet touch of backend warmth. Drink 2035+. |

BH 96 (1/2019): (from several parcels now totaling 1.89 ha that are divided between 40% terres rouges and 60% terres blanches.) This is unusually high-toned with its pure essence of red berry fruit, especially pomegranate, earth and discreet spice nuances. There is a wonderfully refined texture to the stony, chiseled and focused broad-shouldered flavors that possess a taut muscularity that really comes up on the intensely saline and youthfully austere finish that is sneaky long. The addition of .5 ha of terres blanches is understandably going to change the nature of this wine to one that is somewhat more elegant if less powerful. I like the change but long-time fans should be aware that going forward, the Roumier BM has changed and arguably for the better. In a word, superb. Drink 2036+. |

VM 95 (1/2024): The 2018 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru from Roumier offers copious amounts of black cherries and blueberry fruit. It is still a "baby", though that doesn't make it unenjoyable, even if you cannot help thinking that it needs at least another decade. The palate is framed by those succulent tannins, one of the tropes of the growing season. There's a little more glycerine than I remember, with a powerful and still almost overwhelming finish that prompts me to be just a little more cautious with my score. Tasted at Le Benaton in Beaune. Neal Martin. BH 95 (1/2021): A very spicy and overtly floral nose consists of liqueur-like aromas of various red berries trimmed in hints of wood and menthol. There is a lovely sense of energy and delineation to the broad-shouldered yet relatively fine flavors that terminate in a beautifully textured, powerful and firm finish that possesses its usual level of youthful austerity. This very serious Bonnes Mares will also require extended keeping as it's every bit as structured as the Ruchottes. WA 95 (1/2021): Opening in the glass with aromas of ripe red fruits, rose petals, peonies, orange rind and exotic spices, Roumier's 2018 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is full-bodied, multidimensional and concentrated, with a rich and layered mid-palate, a muscular chassis of powdery tannin and a bright, mineral finish. This is very much built for the long haul, but it has taken the warm vintage in its stride. |

BH 87-89 (1/2020): An attractively fresh and ripe nose displays layered aromas of plum, black cherry and a whiff of earth. VM 89-91 (2/2012): Medium red. Highly aromatic nose combines pure red fruits, spices and flowers. Juicy, lively and dense, with a strong spice character to the precise, slightly lean, mineral-driven flavors. Finishes with very good floral persistence. BH 88-91 (1/2012): (contains some premier cru juice from Fuees). This is also exceptionally pretty and not surprisingly more elegant as well as the nose features a slightly more deeply pitched combination of floral notes, red pinot and cassis aromas. There is a lovely mineral component to the satin-textured medium-bodied flavors where the supporting tannins are ultra-refined, all wrapped in a lacy and persistent finish. A classic Chambolle of finesse. Drink 2016+. WA 88-90 (2/2012): The 2010 Chambolle-Musigny shows terrific energy and class. There is lovely freshness and vibrancy in the aromas and flavors, with an underpinning of minerality that gives the wine its focus and sense of direction. Bright floral notes add lift on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022. |

WS 90 (8/2014): The plush texture envelops the black cherry, black currant and violet flavors in this juicy red. The tannins leave a light coating inside the lips. Fine length. Best from 2015 through 2024. 168 cases imported. BH 89 (1/2014): (contains some premier cru juice from Fuees.) A wonderfully expressive and highly perfumed nose of red and blue berry fruit aromas leads to attractively textured, precise and detailed middle weight flavors that possess plenty of energy and a lovely hint of finishing minerality. Recommended. Drink 2017+. Outstanding! WA 88 (2/2014): The 2011 Chambolle-Musigny Village has a lifted bouquet with scents of strawberry shortcake intermingling with autumn leaves. Strong field mushroom scents enter the fray with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, gentle leafy red-berry fruit with a light, agreeable finish. Drink this over the next decade. Drink now-2020. VM 88 (3/2014): Bright red-ruby. Smoky red fruit aromas come across as a bit roasted following Roumier's 2012s. Fat, sweet and very ripe, with a liqueur-like quality to the raspberry, smoke, chocolate and earth flavors. Plenty of substance here but also a touch of greenness. Larger-scaled than the 2012 but hints at an overripe/underripe character. |

BH 92 (1/2008): (From a 1.75 ha parcel of vines averaging 35 to 40 years of age.) A somewhat riper and highly expressive nose that is even more elegant puts on a display of complex aromas of red and black pinot fruit nuanced by distinct floral notes, especially violets, that precede the rich and intensely mineral-inflected medium full flavors carrying a wonderful sense of underlying tension that focuses the precise and explosive finish. A terrific wine that will age for years and highly recommended. Drink 2013+. Outstanding! |

BH 92 (1/2012): (from a 1.75 ha parcel of vines averaging 35 to 40 years of age) This is also ripe but definitely fresher with lovely purity to the enveloping red pinot liqueur-like aromas that are trimmed in both spice and mineral nuances. The detailed, intense and stylish medium-bodied flavors brim with plenty of dry extract, all wrapped in an explosive, focused and lingering finish. A ripe but still classic Les Cras that is really quite classy. Drink 2017+. Outstanding! |

WA 92 (2/2014): The 2011 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras has blacker and earthier fruit compared to the village cru, but here there is more volume and intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, slightly grainy tannins. There is lovely balance here: a little more forward than I was expecting, but generous with impressive complexity on the finish. This forms a fine introduction to the delights of Christophe’s wines. Drink 2016-2030. VM 92 (4/2014): Good bright red. Exotic red berry liqueur, flowers, passion fruit and peach on the nose. Fat and sweet for this cru; softer and less refined than the 2012 version. Still, this shows better inner-mouth tension than the Combottes and finishes firmer, with chewy tannins. WS 91 (8/2014): A broad, rich style, sporting violet, black currant, black cherry and spice flavors. The structure is both vibrant and firm, showing fine balance and grip on the finish. Best from 2016 through 2030. 35 cases imported. BH 91 (1/2014): (From a 1.75 ha parcel of vines averaging 35 to 40 years of age). A gorgeously perfumed and intensely floral-suffused nose evidences hints of stone, red berries, anise and a bit of earth. There is really lovely detail and intensity to the precise, dusty and tension-filled medium-bodied flavors that exude a fine minerality on the mouth coating, linear, mildly austere and highly persistent finish where a saline nuance appears. This is quite good. Drink 2021+. Outstanding! |

BH 91-93 (1/2016): (from a 1.75 ha parcel of vines averaging 35 to 40 years of age.) Firm reduction pushes the underlying fruit to the background though it does seem ripe. There is more volume and certainly more punch to the overtly stony medium weight flavors that possess outstanding delineation before terminating in a youthfully austere, saline, focused and relatively power finish that offers impressive persistence. Textbook Les Cras. Drink 2024+. Outstanding! |

BH 93 (1/2019): (From a 1.75 ha parcel of vines averaging 35 to 40 years of age.) Here too there is a background hint of wood framing the super-fresh if cool and restrained aromas of liqueur-like red cherry, rose petal and subtle spice whiffs. There is excellent concentration to the succulent yet well-detailed and intensely mineral-inflected flavors that are blessed with plenty of sappy dry extract that also serves to buffer the moderately firm core of tannins shaping the beautifully persistent finish that also flashes a suggestion of warmth. This is terrific and should age gracefully yet the copious level of sap should permit it to drink reasonably well young too. Drink 2028+. Outstanding! |

WS 95 (5/2020): A well-defined red, with great focus and precision to the black cherry, black currant, violet and stony, mineral flavors. Ends with a chalky sensation, lending gravitas to the finish and overall impression. Best from 2023 through 2045. VM 94 (2/2021): The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru has a dreamy bouquet that gushes with brambly red berry fruit, redcurrant, cranberry and, to be exact, Tiptree “Little Scarlet” strawberry jam, all beautifully defined. The palate is plush, velvety smooth, very refined with pitch perfect acidity. This Les Cras displays admirable depth, moving into more red Morello cherry and light allspice notes towards the delicate and yet persistent finish. Iron fist/velvety glove and all that... This is a brilliant Chambolle-Musigny from Christophe Roumier and it soared even higher the following day, gaining more nuance and filling out further on the finish. Neal Martin. |

WA 91 (10/2005): Earthy, relatively elegant nose of dark fruits and a touch of underbrush merges with medium weight, nicely precise, punchy flavors of good depth and extract if not necessarily great density or power. This is a relatively elegant wine of obvious class and only a touch of the youthful aggressiveness and austerity of young Clos Vougeot. I would suggest holding this for another 3 to 5 years and drinking up over the next 10. |

BH 92 (1/2013): I have never been a huge fan of this wine as I often find it to be somewhat coarse, and while always very good, I am rarely moved by it. However, in 2010, as was the case in 2009, this is much better than it usually is with a relatively perfumed nose that includes notes of earth along with the natural sauvage character of the vineyard. In fact there is even a certain elegance to the attractively layered airy and cool red berry liqueur aromas. There is good richness and fine volume to the moderately robust and muscular flavors that culminate in a balanced and linear finish that evidences mild austerity. I quite like this as the tannins are finer than usual and there is a real sense of harmony and completeness. Drink 2020+. Outstanding! WS 92 (6/2013): Starts out tight, with currant, kirsch, spice and earth flavors. Rounds out with a few hours of aeration, offering black cherry and tobacco notes. Balanced, displaying a firm finish for now. Best from 2016 through 2028. 170 cases imported. VM 91+ (4/2013): Good bright, deep red. Briary dark berries, black cherry, menthol and a smoky nuance on the nose. Rich and quite ripe, with deep dark berry and smoke flavors perked up by mint and minerals. At once dense and agreeable for this cuvee. WA 90-92 (2/2012): The 2010 Morey St. Denis Clos de la Bussiere is an explosive wine. Dark red cherries, freshly cut flowers, graphite and mint all take shape in the glass. The Clos de la Bussiere stands out for its energy, focus and length. Persistent saline notes add freshness. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2035. |

BH 91 (1/2014): (a monopole of the domaine) A high-toned and attractively layered nose mixes notes of red and black cherry with earth and humus nuances. There is excellent detail and punch to the equally mineral-tinged medium-bodied flavors that possess relatively refined tannins that are notably finer than usual, all wrapped in a harmonious and solidly persistent finish. I like the fruit/acid balance and this should age well over the medium-term. Drink 2019+. Outstanding! |

BH 91 (1/2015): (a monopole of the domaine.) A brooding but well-layered nose combines notes of both red and dark currants, earth, floral tones and a hint of the sauvage. The rich and unusually supple medium-bodied flavors possess fine mid-palate concentration before culminating in a more refined finish than usual that delivers excellent length and only a trace of rusticity. I have said this several times recently but since 2009 this wine has become noticeably more interesting. Drink 2022+. |

WA 89-91 (12/2014): The 2013 Morey-Saint-Denis Clos de la Bussiere has a taut, well-defined bouquet with light oyster-shell scents emerging in the glass. The palate is crisp and fresh with a chalky, almost brittle texture, noticeable acidity and a tart and pointed finish. This seems just a little disjointed at the moment, so hopefully it will meld together during the remainder of its maturation period. VM 89-91 (1/2015): (racked five days prior to my visit): Expressive nose offers scents of raspberry, cranberry, clove and mocha. Supple and nicely ripe, with a lovely restrained sweetness to the flavors of strawberry, coffee and underbrush. Lower-toned than the village Chambolle but larger-scaled, finishing with solid tannic support. In comparison to the Chambolle, this wine hints at a sunny, even slightly roasted character. |

BH 91 (1/2017): (a monopole of the domaine.) This trades a bit of elegance in favor of more aromatic complexity on the cool and pure mix of red currant, earth and game that exhibits discreet floral top notes that are trimmed in discreet wood nuances. There is both fine volume and intensity to the punchy flavors that are more refined than usual thanks to the fine grain of the supporting tannins on the attractively well-balanced and persistent finish. This is sufficiently tight that it's going to require at least 5 to 7 years of bottle age first. Drink 2024+. Outstanding! |

BH 91 (1/2018): A more deeply pitched nose combines notes of dark currant, earth, underbrush and discreet humus nuances. There is fine richness and plenty of punch to the more voluminous and once again solidly concentrated flavors that are shaped by surprisingly sleek tannins on the firm, highly complex, lengthy and impeccably well-balanced finish save for a trace of warmth. This firm and dusty effort will need all of a decade to shed its core of tannins and become more user friendly. Drink 2025+. Outstanding! |

VM 94 (10/2019): The 2016 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Clos de la Bussière is tightly-wound on the nose with blackberry, raspberry, hints of singed leather and spice. I appreciate the delineation here. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin, a fine bead of acidity, chalky in texture with a grip and certainly impressive focus on the finish. This is an excellent Morey-Saint-Denis. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. Neal Martin. |
