WA 91-92 (6/2010): Blueberry fruit and citrus oils inform a surprisingly creamy yet also vivacious palate on Ponsot’s 2008 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes, which displays a textural and tannic refinement; near creaminess; as well as bright length reminiscent of - yet going beyond - those exhibited by the corresponding village cuvee. Saliva-inducing salinity and suggestions of chalk add enticing and intriguing mineral dimensions, while star anise, black tea, and peat add a metaphorically dark aspect. This long-lined, energetic, exuberantly-finishing exemplar of its great site ought to be worth following for at least a dozen years. BH 90-92 (1/2010): This is a very ripe yet wonderfully elegant '08 with an expressive and densely fruited nose of cassis and black cherry that introduces rich, full and equally serious flavors that are not as firmly structured as the Alouettes but more seductive and almost as long. This too is a fine effort and despite the high level of ripeness, it loses none of it Chambolle character. Drink 2016+. Outstanding! |

BH 91-93 (1/2011): A wonderfully elegant nose of notably ripe red cherry liqueur cut with wet stone and warm earth notes that can also be found on the utterly delicious, concentrated and sappy middle weight flavors that possess excellent depth on the balanced and strikingly persistent finish. Like the Cuvee des Alouettes, I can't ever remember seeing a better vintage for this wine at this early stage. Drink 2017+. Outstanding! WA 90-92 (5/2011): The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes is an immediate wine. The aromatics alone are beautifully open and expressive. The fruit shows terrific delineation, depth and nuance with notable silkiness and elegance. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029. |

BH 90-92 (4/2012): Strong reduction prevents an evaluation of the nose though there is excellent richness and concentration to the delicious and sappy flavors that possess ripe supporting tannins and plenty of buffering midpalate sap, all wrapped in a balanced, spicy, complex and built-to-age finish. Worth considering. Drink 2020+. |

BH 91 (1/2005): This is really quite pretty too but it can't match the depth and explosive quality of the Griotte. Still, there is good complexity on the high-toned red fruit nose cut with an almost pungently earthy character followed by a very fresh, intense and precise palate impression and fine length. In short, this is an exceptionally refined wine that will also require plenty of time. |

BH 93-95 (1/2011): Somewhat surprisingly, here the nose is even more elegant than that of the Griotte with its cool, airy and pure red cherry-liqueur, spice and essence of liquid minerality suffused nose that leads to dense, intense and equally mineral-driven big-bodied but refined flavors, all wrapped in a beautifully detailed, explosively long and youthfully austere finish. This is a serious and quite restrained effort that will require the better part of two decades to reach its full apogee. Drink 2026+. |

BH 92-95 (1/2019): (from a .60 ha parcel in En Gemeaux.) An elegant, pure and ultra-fresh nose displays riper aromas of various red berries with plenty of spice, earth and lavender/lilac nuances. There is both excellent volume and mid-palate sappiness to the delicious and vibrant medium weight flavors that culminate in a youthfully austere, highly complex and impressively long finish. This is terrific but note well that it's going to require the better part of 20 years to reach its full maturity. Drink 2035+. Don't miss! VM 90-92 (1/2019): The 2017 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru was harvested from September 18 and underwent a long, two-and-a-half week maceration at a lower temperature than usual. It has a very confit-like bouquet of sweet crème de cassis and pressed violet aromas and a slightly meaty/dried blood note tucked in underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, gentle grip and good weight, though it needs more complexity to come through on the sweet, candied finish. Neal Martin. |

BH 92 (7/2004): Forward, nicely intense, earthy black fruit nose followed by delicious, ripe, moderately structured, relatively dense, nicely elegant flavors and a long, beautifully delineated finish. This has already begun to lose a bit of the incredibly seductive baby fat that made this so alluring young but that said, it is still altogether lovely and an exceptionally fine effort for the vintage. Drink 2007+. |

BH 92 (1/2004): Classic ruby. Highly complex and nuanced black cherry fruit aromas and fresh, damp earth notes lead to medium weight, sappy, refined flavors that display Outstanding precision and superb length. This is ripe, pure and finishes with a very appealing stony quality to complement the Outstanding persistence. There is solid structure and the finish is quite firm and this will require at least a decade to be at its best. Drink 2011-2021. VM 88+ (5/2007): Medium red. Musky redcurrant and dried cherry on the nose, with suggestions of porcini, tobacco and underbrush. A firmly tannic, medium-bodied wine with deep cherry and cherry pit flavors. Is this simply youthful or over-structured? Or both? Finishes a bit dry and dusty, with clenched bitter cherry and dark chocolate tones. |

BH 93 (1/2005): (the aggregate size of this holding is a whopping 3.4 ha.) There is even more aromatic complexity with similar and brilliant red and black fruit notes though not the spice with superbly sappy, concentrated and very pure flavors that display flat out incredible length and impeccable balance. This will join the ranks of some of the best vintages of Ponsot's Clos de la Roche, which is saying something. It is however built for the very patient. Drink 2017+. |

VM 93 (4/2007): Good deep red. Superripe, slightly decadent aromas of red cherry, leather and underbrush. Plush, fat and large-scaled; a full-blown expression of soil, with notes of smoke and game. This boasts extraordinary sweetness for the vintage, remaining just this side of over the top. Just a hint of nut skin on the finish. Very sexy wine. BH 92 (1/2007): (the aggregate size of this holding is a whopping 3.4 ha and Ponsot is easily the largest holder in Clos de la Roche). A stunningly complex mixture of earthy and animale red and black pinot fruit aromas lead to brooding, intense and jaw droppingly powerful and concentrated, chewy and complex flavors that possess a seriously long finish. There isn't quite the raw depth of the Clos St. Denis at this point but it's a very high quality '04. Drink 2015+. |

BH 94 (1/2010): (the aggregate size of this holding is a whopping 3.4 ha and Ponsot is easily the largest holder in Clos de la Roche.) A magnificently complex nose offers up a mix of both high and medium-toned aromas of mostly red berries but with a panoply of background nuances including leather, tea, underbrush, spice hints, jerky and smoke, most of which transfer to the textured, intense and precise full-bodied flavors that are, somewhat surprisingly, not quite as dense as those of the Clos St. Denis but actually finer (normally it's the reverse), all wrapped in a hugely long and explosive finish that completely coats the palate with extract, indeed so much of it that this does not seem all that structured yet it will clearly need at least 15 years to be at its best. Note that there was a hair of backend dryness in evidence that I am attributing to the recent bottling. Drink 2022+. |

VM 96 (5/2011): The 2008 Clos de la Roche Cuvee Vieilles Vignes is a silky, elegant wine. Freshly cut roses, dark red fruit and minerals sit on a core of utterly refined tannins. This shows stunning balance in a weightless style that gains energy on the clean, focused finish. This is a fabulous effort from Ponsot. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2033. Antonio Galloni. BH 91 (4/2016): There is a subtle but certainly not invisible touch of brett to the otherwise cool, ripe and complex aromas of plum, red and dark berries, earth and plenty of spice nuances. There is both good volume and energy to the well-detailed broad-shouldered flavors that culminate in an edgy and mildly drying finale. It's hard to know how much of the problem with the finish is attributable to the brett as often there is gas when there is brett which causes the supporting tannins to seem more prominent. My score is a compromise as this is not a bad wine but it's obviously not technically perfect. Moreover it's entirely possible that other bottles would show quite differently if there was no brett. I will have to try another bottle to see if the problem is limited to just this bottle or whether it's systemic. Try from 2023+. |

BH 96-98 (1/2011): (the aggregate size of this holding is a whopping 3.4 ha and Ponsot is easily the largest holder in Clos de la Roche). This, along with the Clos St. Denis, is the most complete wine in the range with mild reduction that isn't strong enough to completely block the spice, earth and game infused nose that introduces strikingly rich, naturally sweet and mouth coating flavors that explode on the formidably long finish. This is a classy wine with absolutely superb complexity, impeccable balance and almost uncanny presence, all delivered with grace and power. Be prepared to be patient however as this will need plenty of time. A 'wow' wine. Drink 2029+. WA 94-97 (5/2011): The 2009 Clos de la Roche Cuvee Vieilles Vignes is round, sweet and totally enveloping. It is a huge, towering Burgundy that impresses for its gorgeous inner perfume and juicy, exuberant fruit. This shows tons of richness without being heavy or overripe in any way. BH 95-97 (4/2012): (the aggregate size of this holding is a whopping 3.4 ha and Ponsot is easily the largest holder in Clos de la Roche). In stark contrast to the expressiveness of the Clos St. Denis, this is almost mute and even aggressive swirling liberates only the briefest glimpses of wild red berries and earth notes. There is superb size and weight to the imposing and overtly muscular flavors that also enjoy an incredible amount of dry extract that confers a supple and seductively textured mouth feel to the highly concentrated mid-palate. The presently buried tannins are intense and markedly firm though not hard on the explosively long finish that seems to go on and on. This should be something very special if given sufficient time to reach its apogee. Drink 2032+. |

WA 95 (11/2014): Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. Laurent Ponsot’s Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes '11 is reticent at first and demands coaxing, although it repays the patient imbiber with lively floral scents that are entwined with strawberry pastilles and cranberry. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy and almost corpulent entry, at least for a 2011 Côte de Nuits. There is admirable depth here with fleshy strawberry and red cherry notes infused with fennel and sage. It lingers for a very long time, which is quite unusual for this vintage. While it needs another few years to completely coalesce, it will be worth the wait. |

BH 94-97 (1/2015): This is also absolutely stunning in every respect and displays a kaleidoscopic combination that is not quite as spicy as the Clos St. Denis though it is earthier and almost as complex. It is immediately clear that this is a bigger and more powerful wine that possesses Outstanding mid-palate density and a huge reserve of dry extract that imparts a seductive mouth feel and mostly buffers the exceptionally firm tannic spine on the massively long finish. This is an imposing effort that is even more imposingly structured and there is no point in buying this if you're not prepared to forget it in the back of your cellar for at least a decade, and two to three would be preferable. This is a stunner of a Clos de la Roche and it will be interesting to see which of the two Ponsot big boys is ultimately the better wine. WA 95-97 (12/2014): The 2013 Clos de la Roche Cuvee Vieilles Vignes, from vines planted in 1905, has an inviting, delineated bouquet with vibrant wild strawberry, raspberry preserve and mineral notes. The palate has great tension – so suave and poised with superb symmetry and an effortless finish that I don’t think the Clos Saint Denis has at the moment. Laurent Ponsot did not disguise his enthusiasm for this Grand Cru and I could understand why. |

VM 95+ (1/2018): Full medium red. Multidimensional nose combines black cherry, dark raspberry, mocha, brown spices, crushed rock and mellow soil tones. Wonderfully concentrated and elegant, and more expressive in the early going if a bit less sappy than the Chapelle-Chambertin. Offers a mix of red and black fruits (the Chapelle is more black in character) as well as a medicinal menthol quality that suggests the wine will evolve slowly. This plush, broad, mouthfilling wine finishes very long, with suave, refined tannins and captivating minerality and savory soil tones. In a dozen years, my score may look low. (Drink between 2026-2042). Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 93-96 (1/2019): (the aggregate size of this holding is a whopping 3.4 ha and Ponsot is by far the largest holder in Clos de la Roche.) A spicy, cool and gorgeously complex nose reflects notes of both red and dark currant, earth and a whiff of leather. There is excellent richness to the concentrated and beautifully textured broad-shouldered flavors that possess focused power and a subtle minerality that really comes up on the youthfully austere and strikingly long finish. As good as the Chapelle is, there is just another dimension present here. Drink 2037+. Don't miss! VM 90-92 (1/2019): The 2017 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru comes from two climats (2.8 hectares in Clos de la Roche and 0.70 hectares at the bottom of Montluisants) that are each fermented and aged separately. My sample is a blend of the two. It was picked on September 19–20. Like some of Ponsot’s other cuvees, it has a high-toned bouquet of cassis and violets, developing a hint of licorice with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and more tension than the other Grand Crus from the domaine. A sprinkle of white pepper and sage appears toward the finish. This should age well, though I would like more backbone and grip on the finish. Neal Martin. |

BH 93-96 (1/2017): A kaleidoscopically spicy and subtly floral nose is even more discreet if patently classier with its lovely aromas of red and dark cherry liqueur, lilac, tea and softly anise-tinged aromas. The sweet, pure and understated flavors are underpinned by firm and dense but quite fine tannins that support the mouth coating, indeed palate staining finish that is impeccably well-balanced and sneaky long. There is ample sap to buffer the structure and unlike many of these grands crus, this should actually be approachable young. In sum, this is a magnificent CSD. (Drink starting 2033). |

BH 92-94 (1/2011): Heavy reduction. By contrast, there is excellent punch and underlying tension to the detailed yet fleshy mineral-inflected flavors that possess plenty of tannin-buffering dry extract as well as excellent size and weight on the powerful and beautifully well balanced and very firm finish. Despite the overt muscularity, this remains a wine of elegance and refinement. Drink 2024+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

BH 88-91 (1/2011): (from a parcel of vines in Les Epointures, a lieu-dit near Chapelle-Chambertin). Here the nose is very fresh and very Gevrey with cool and pungently earthy aromas of mineral-inflected dark berry fruit that lead to rich, round and supple middle weight flavors that possess good mid-palate fat and lovely complexity on the ever-so-mildly rustic but long finish. This is a fine villages and worth a look.Drink 2016+. WA 90-93 (5/2011): The 2009 Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvee de l’Abeille is striking for the purity of its fruit and its freshness. This is a totally refined wine graced with exquisite nuance, depth and definition. The Cuvee de l’Abeille is a hugely promising wine. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029. |

BH 92-95 (4/2012): (from a .90 ha parcel). An ultra-elegant and exceptionally pure nose of wild raspberries and both red and black currants introduces seductively textured and silky middle weight flavors that are utterly delicious. As appealing as this appears at present there is a very firm lashing of supporting tannins that provide shape and detail to the gorgeously persistent finish. This should be great in time as it has everything that it needs. Drink 2025+. |

BH 92-95 (1/2015): (from a .90 ha parcel.) This is notably more aromatically elegant with its pretty nose of extract of red cherry, raspberry, pomegranate and plum where added breadth is present in the form of spice, tea, earth and sandalwood hints. There is that lovely sense of underlying tension present on the medium weight plus flavors that display both stone and soil undertones that continue onto the balanced, classy and stylish finish. This is terrific though despite the refined mouth feel there is a very firm tannic spine that will require plenty of time to fully resolve. Patience required. Drink 2028+. WA 91-93 (12/2014): The 2013 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru has a tightly wound bouquet with blackberry, touches of mulberry and briary. It is a relatively "conservative" Griotte compared to others tasted from barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip in the mouth. A little fuller than the Charmes-Chambertin '13 with fine backbone, this feels chewier, but with plenty of substance on the finish. This is a gutsy Griotte, but it will mellow by the time it is bottled. |

BH 91-93 (1/2010): (from Monts Luisants) A ripe but brooding and very primary nose of plum, earth and a sauvage hint that can also be found on the extremely rich and full bodied flavors that are supported by very firm tannins and an impeccably balanced finish of stunning length. In the last few years, this has consistently delivered Outstanding quality and is well worth considering. Drink 2018+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

BH 90-93 (4/2012): : (from Monts Luisants; an alouette is a lark). Strong reduction again precludes a satisfactory examination of the aromas. By contrast to the funky nose there is excellent verve and freshness to the concentrated, detailed and quite impressively pure and transparent flavors that terminate in a mouth coating and persistent finish. Interestingly the tannins here are almost as fine-grained as those of the Chambolle Charmes. Drink 2022+. |

VM 88-91 (1/2019): The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Cuvee Allouette is the twin of the Montluisants Blanc from the bottom part of that vineyard. There are plenty of red cherries and cassis scents on the nose, which just needs a little more terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and slightly chalky. On the final third of this wine, the terroir belatedly comes through with clarity. Fine. Neal Martin. BH 88-90 (1/2019): (from the 1er portion of Monts Luisants; an alouette is a lark.) A cooler and more restrained nose evidences notes of red currant, spice, floral and plenty of earth influence. The supple, round and reasonably precise middle weight flavors exude a hint of minerality that also adds a touch of lift to the dusty if slightly drying finish. There is more density and power but it's not immediately clear if the finish will harmonize. Drink 2025+. |

VM 90-92 (1/2019): The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis Village Cuvee des Grives comes from just below the woods above the village. It has a clean, precise bouquet of pastille-like blackberry and bilberry fruit, tightly wound at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, quite focused and very well balanced. This is an unassuming but effective Morey Village with a wonderful saline finish. Superb. Neal Martin. BH 88-91 (1/2019): (from vines replanted in 2005 in the villages portion of Monts Luisants.) An equally fresh is somewhat more deeply pitched aromas consist of dark cherry, raspberry and whispers of violet and newly turned earth. The attractively vibrant medium weight flavors possess an almost creamy mid-palate along with a hint of minerality that adds a bit of lift to the delicious, balanced and refreshing finale. Drink 2023+. |

BH 91-94 (6/2017): A distinctly ripe yet still attractively fresh nose is composed by notes of pear, acacia blossom, citrus and brioche hints. There is both excellent volume and power to the subtly stony big-bodied flavors that brim with dry extract while delivering outstanding length on the reasonably well-balanced finish where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This is extremely primary and is going to require at least some cellaring. (Drink starting 2023) |
