| JD 95 (8/2018): Moving to the Châteauneuf-du-Pape from bottle, the 2016 vintage was described as having the power of 2010 and similar to yet fresher than 2007. The 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape offers a great bouquet of black raspberries, tapenade, crushed violets, and spring flowers, and shares lots of similarities to the Chaupin cuvee (and it’s less expensive!). Full-bodied, incredibly elegant and seamless, it might be the finest traditional cuvee ever produced from this estate. |

WA 98-100 (10/2011): A potential candidate for perfection is the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Chaupin, which may turn out to eclipse my favorite Chaupin to date, the 2007, and closely behind it, the 2009. Dense blackish/purple, with extraordinary intensity, precision and focus, this wine is very backward due to the higher acids in this vintage, but has a layered, skyscraper-like texture and a stunning nose of kirsch, black raspberries, lavender, and spice box. Some licorice also makes an impression. Enormously concentrated yet relatively delicate and light on its feet for a wine that is probably 15%-plus in alcohol and as concentrated as this is, it should be a future legend of Chateauneuf du Pape and evolve for 20-25 years.
JD 96-98+ (9/2011): As with the estates other ’10, the 2010 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Chaupin, tasted out of foudre, shows uncommon purity and freshness. Exhibiting captivating notes of fresh underbrush, flowers, violets, spice, licorice, and wet stone-like minerality that’s supported by perfectly ripe blackberry fruit, the wine is full-bodied and elegant on the palate, possessing thrilling levels of fruit, awesome focus and freshness, and a classically styled, very long finish that highlights ripe tannin. Brilliantly done, this should be a very long lived bottle of wine with a huge drink window.
JLL ***** (12/2011): (Barrel) Dark robe. Blackberry and blueberry lead fruit air with sensible filling in the bouquet - this can become varied and stylish. The second fruit air is prune - ie ripeness. Enclosed, compact black fruit on the palate runs clearly, has cut. It persists well. It is reserved in all its youth. The fruit also runs across the palate, is juicy without undue flamboyance. It ends nice and coolly, and is balanced. From late 2014.
VM 94-96 (2/2012): (100% grenache): Inky ruby. Explosive, kaleidoscopic bouquet evokes red and dark berry preserves, potpourri, star anise and minerals. Sappy, palate-staining raspberry and blackberry flavors show superb depth and clarity, with exotic floral pastille and fruitcake nuances gaining strength on the back end. Silky tannins appear late on the finish, which lingers with Outstanding persistence and clarity. This was one of the best 2010s that I tasted in November. |

WA 96 (10/2017): The 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin is all Grenache, 40% whole cluster, aged in two-thirds foudre and one-third demi-muids and drawn exclusively from sandy sites. It showcases incredibly lush, silky fruit. Raspberries and cherries of incredible purity add hints of chocolate on the long finish but never seem heavy or warm.
JD 95 (10/2017): The 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Chaupin is another elegant, seamless example of this cuvee that shines for its complexity and length. Black raspberries, black cherries, dried flowers, incense, and spice note all emerge from this incredibly pretty, nuanced and silky beauty. With polished tannin and solid length, it's going to keep for 10-15 years. It lacks the depth of a truly great year but is a fabulous wine that just sings of Grenache.
VM 93-95 (3/2017): (40 percent whole clusters; raised in foudres and demi-muids) Lurid violet. Heady aromas of candied red fruits, spicecake and minerals take on suave floral and garrigue qualities in the glass. Juicy and precise on the palate, offering sappy raspberry, cherry liqueur and spicecake flavors and hints of lavender pastille and blood orange. Silky tannins add shape to the extremely long, juicy finish, which leaves an intensely perfumed floral note behind. Many of these vines were planted in 1912. Josh Raynolds.
JS 93 (8/2017): 100% grenache from vines planted in 1912, this has a spiced blue plum and cassis-scented nose leading into a palate that has smooth, deep and velvety layers of blueberry and plum flavor. Drink now.
JLL **** (9/2016): Dark red robe. The bouquet has a square shape, gives the image of thick skinned grapes via its slightly baked aspect, a low-key black fruit and a note of rosemary beyond that. The palate is intense, with a run of cool blue berry fruit and tannins that have edge on them for now. The finish is charged, and needs to integrate: currently it’s a dry, demanding sign-off. JD 99 (8/2018): Bottled end of February/early in March, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Chaupin is incredible stuff, and while I suspect it’s the best vintage to date, it’s going to be great comparing it to bottles of the 2005, 2007, 2010, and 2015 over the coming 15+ years. This beauty offers a thrilling blend of kirsch, blackberries, smoked earth, graphite, and licorice on the nose. It's full-bodied, deep, pure, ultra-fine, and powerful on the palate and flirts with perfection. It’s a tour de force in Grenache that readers need to snatch up!
WA 95-97 (10/2017): Tasted from a single foudre representing the La Crau Est lieu-dit, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin comes across as even richer and creamier than the 2015, yet with brighter acids and similar spice. Red fruit lingers, morphing toward chocolate as the finish goes on and on.
WS 95 (3/2018): Delightful plum, raspberry and blackberry compote flavors form the core, with racy, graphite-edged structure running underneath. Dark anise and tobacco notes check in throughout. The long finish lets the fruit linger. Best from 2020 through 2034. 500 cases imported.

Beyond an attractive theme of perfume, there is also a hint of lees from its current raising. The palate runs well with crunchy red-fruited content, the tannins have spark, and the aftertaste brings in gunflint, cut. This is punchy, no-nonsense Chateauneuf, which needs to grow into its frame. |

| JD 98+ (11/2021): I was able to taste the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvee Chaupin on two occasions, rating it one point higher on one of those as well. Incredible notes of red and black fruits, violets, scorched earth, ground pepper, and Provençal garrigue notes define the nose, and it’s a darker, richer, slightly more powerful wine than usual, while still showing the inherent elegance and finesse this cuvee always shows. Give bottles 2-3 years and enjoy over the following 15-20. Don’t miss it! |

WA 97 (8/2014): The 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is even better, with another layer of texture and depth. Chocolate-laced fruits, cured meats, spice, crushed rock and sweet spice all show from this perfumed, up-front, sweetly fruited Chateauneuf, and it still has a core of concentrated fruit and solid tannin structure. I see no reason to hold off, but it too will thrill over the coming 3-5 years.
JD 97 (11/2009): A real Wow bottle of wine, the 2000 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes is just packed with deep, rich and fresh aromas of blackberry, licorice, meat juice, smoke and graphite. I was literally swooning over the aromatics on the second day and the wine is full bodied with awesome purity, precision and balance. Still very young, this has a long life ahead of it.
VM 93 (1/2003): Dark red-ruby. Distinct surmaturite on the nose: roasted red fruits, roasted herbs, chocolate, earth and minerals. Lush, sweet and layered, with classic superripe grenache flavors of chocolate and spice cake. Very smooth wine, finishing with toothcoating tannins and the quintessential warmth of a wine from the South. "In an Outstanding vintage like 2000, I tried to preserve freshness of fruit and finesse, and thus did not try to do a big extraction," noted Sabon. Stephen Tanzer.
WS 89 (8/2002): Thick and ripe, with lovely terroir and a fat texture that makes it taste opulent and generous. Full-bodied and aromatically open, with interesting mineral, blood orange, iron and plum notes that linger on the chewy, firm finish. Needs time. Best from 2004 through 2010. 830 cases made. |

WA 97+ (2/2006): One of the vintage’s most compelling wines, the huge, dense purple-colored 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes offers aromas of creme de cassis, creosote, and flowers along with immense concentration, body, and tannin. The finish is reminiscent of a first-growth Bordeaux, meaning it is well-delineated and tannic. Cellar it for 4-5 years and consume it over the following two decades.
JD 96 (4/2008): The 2003 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes is just packed with raspberry liqueur, plums, graphite and licorice notes and with air, subtle spice and garrigue aromas start to show up. Full bodied with fantastic levels of fruit, this is impeccably balanced, seamless and long with gobs of underlying structure and fine grained, ripe tannins on the monster finish. Damn thing is drinking so well, this is my second bottle inside of a month... here's to hoping I can keep my hands off my sole remaining bottle for a least a year or two.
WS 96 (10/2005): Gorgeous raspberry ganache and spice aromas give way to richly layered but silky smooth notes of boysenberry, blackberry, mocha, mineral and tar. Long, pure beam of fruit resonates through the finish. Fantastic purity and finesse for the vintage. Best from 2007 through 2025. 1,200 cases made.
VM 95 (2/2006): Saturated dark red. Explosively aromatic, highly complex nose offers kirsch, raspberry liqueur, blueberry, tarragon, baking spices, smoked meat, espresso and hot asphalt. Lush and hefty but suave, with rich flavors of sweet dark berries, framboise, candied chocolate and licorice that build and deepen with aeration. A brisk mineral note keeps the fruit in check and adds focus and lift to the knockout, silky finish.
JLL **** (7/2005): Very round, suave, unctuous wine. Great charm on bouquet, floral elements, with also a meaty, brooding side. Has a rich, southern feel, very good density. Length sound. Round, sustained and persistent wine, aftertaste is herbal, then tannins, white pepper effect arrives. |

WA 100 (10/2009): The perfect 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes (tasted on four separate occasions) is composed of 85% Grenache, 10% Syrah, and the rest Mourvedre and other authorized varietals from 60- to 100+-year-old vines. The wine is aged in both tank (75%) and small oak barrels (25%). Its inky/purple color is followed by a phenomenal nose of spring flowers, creme de cassis, blackberries, boysenberries, licorice, truffles, and spice. Displaying massive body, incredible freshness, laser-like focus from the excellent acids, and a finish that goes on well past a minute, this prodigious Chateauneuf du Pape is the most extraordinary wine yet made at this estate. While accessible (as most 2007s are), ideally it needs 4-5 years of cellaring, and should keep for three decades.
WS 96 (11/2009): This is awash in fruit—plum, boysenberry, fig and blackberry—all seamlessly intertwined, while hints of graphite, melted licorice, black tea and violet fill the available space. The long finish has great latent grip. Best from 2010 through 2030. 1,416 cases made.
VM 96 (2/2010): Inky purple. Hypnotic bouquet of dark berries, flowers and spices complicated by black olive, sandalwood and star anise. Lush, creamy and liqueur-like in its depth and sweetness, offering palate-enveloping boysenberry and blueberry flavors and exotic floral pastille and spicecake qualities. Fine-grained tannins add grip and focus to an endless sweet, floral aftertaste. |

Medium bodied and fresh on the palate, the wine displays good acidity, a straight, compact texture, ripe tannin and a classy, long finish. While this lacks the depth that this cuvee normally delivers, the elegance and class on the finish are superb. Drink over the next 10 to 12 years. |

| WA 99 (10/2011): The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is considered by many observers in Chateauneuf du Pape to be the wine of the vintage, and it can most certainly be counted among the finest. A blend of 80% Grenache and the rest Syrah and Mourvedre tipping the scales at 15.5% natural alcohol (which is slightly less than the Chaupin), the wine has an inky black/purple color as well as incredible density and richness, with notes of soy, blackberry, and blueberry liqueur, incense, acacia flowers and licorice. The layered, full-bodied mouthfeel displays no heat, but the wine has massive concentration and a silky, smooth finish. Because of the low acidity in the 2009s, and sweet tannins, this has turned out to be a glorious example of Chateauneuf du Pape to drink over the next two decades. |

WA 100 (10/2012): The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes, which achieved 16% natural alcohol, possesses an inky/purple color. It is slightly tighter and more restrained than the 2010 Chaupin, but it has enormous volume as well as incredible glycerin, richness and fat. A huge bouquet of pure blackberry and black currant fruit intermixed with charcoal, incense, truffles and spring flowers is followed by a prodigious, full-bodied wine that is capable of 20+ years of evolution. I hope Chateauneuf du Pape enthusiasts can find some of this amazing wine!
JD 99 (9/2012): More rich and voluptuous, yet with a similar level of purity and precision, the 2010 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes offers up loads of creamy blackberry, raspberry liqueur, melted licorice, wild flowers, and toasted spice nuances on the nose. Every bit as good on the palate, with a thrilling texture, full-bodied power, and gorgeous underlying structure and tannin, this knockout Châteauneuf-du-Pape stays light and elegant, with nothing out of place or over the top. As with the Chaupin, it is no doubt a brilliant drink now, yet it deserves 7-8 years of bottle age, and will shine for two decades or more!
VM 96 (1/2013): Opaque purple. Fresh blueberry, cassis, incense, licorice and orange zest on the explosively perfumed nose. Broad and sweet, with potent black and blue fruit and floral pastille flavors accompanied by notes of licorice and lavender pastille. WS 95 (7/2013): Dark and rich, with lush, fleshy layers of warm fig paste, blueberry coulis, bittersweet ganache and licorice root. A dark undertow of Turkish coffee rumbles through the finish. Shows plenty of muscular grip, and will need considerable cellaring to settle in fully. Best from 2017 through 2030.
JLL ****[*] (12/2011): Dark colour. The nose is open, blackberry and violet offer very primary appeal. No extras as yet except for a note of damp soil adding depth. The palate sets off on a blackberry coulis flavour, has smoky tannin inset. It is in the state of a wine hardly showing any raising, with shiny fruit. There is lacing in the texture from pebbly, licorice effects late on. Good, Regular Guy sort of wine, though can offer a few wisecracks if given time. |

WA 96 (10/2014): Up in the top handful of wines in the vintage (which should come as no surprise to anyone who follows this estate), the 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is a full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, rich and layered Châteauneuf that doesn’t put a foot wrong. Made from 85% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre and the rest Syrah, it offers blockbuster notes of blackberry, liquid-violets, spice and serious minerality to go with awesome mid-palate depth and layers of sweet tannin. Like the Cuvee Chaupin, it will be better in another handful of years and thrill through 2027.
WS 96 (10/2014): Tightly coiled for now, this features an intense, vivid core of anise, blackberry coulis, plum paste and macerated fig fruit, with black tea, smoldering tobacco and warm ganache notes. Long and dense, but very silky, with gorgeous violet and pastis details lingering in the background. Should unwind with time. Best from 2017 through 2035. 390 cases imported.
VM 94 (4/2015): Inky ruby. Explosive aromas of dark berry preserves, incense and lavender, with a smoky overtone and bright minerality. Pliant and seamless in the mouth, offering intense, palate-staining cassis and blueberry flavors that are energized by juicy acidity. Shows real power and focus on the strikingly long finish, which features velvety tannins and a hint of candied flowers. There's 15% alcohol here, which is actually quite low for this bottling, and I don't detect any undue heat.
JLL **** (11/2013): Full, dark red; the bouquet is moving openly, gives a lateral air of deep set red cherry, mulberry fruit, also licorice, has an inner strength. The nose is fat, very ensemble. The palate holds agreeable, still tight red cherry liqueur fruit with clear tannins close to it, ends on more mineral features than fat ones. There is good style in its Grenache fruit, combines concentration with flow. Herbs, garrigue touches show on the second half of the palate. From late 2016. |

JD 99 (8/2018): Bottled at the same time, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes gives up more cassis, tapenade, underbrush, cured meats, and earth, and it’s a slightly more dense, backward wine compared to the Chaupin. Full-bodied and beautifully concentrated, with tons of structure, it stays fresh and elegant, has sweet tannins, and a blockbuster finish. It's an incredible, borderline perfect wine from this estate that will keep for two decades or more.
WA 97+ (8/2018): Time will tell if this wine equals the stellar 2015; it's certainly very close in quality. The 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes is a blend of approximately 75% Grenache, 12% Mourvèdre, 8% Syrah and the rest other permitted varieties. Tarry and deep on the nose, it delivers waves of blackberries and black cherries on the palate, framing those flavors with plenty of richness, layers of silky tannins and a long, elegant finish.
WS 97 (3/2018): This is packed with plum, raspberry and blackberry confiture flavors that are youthfully wound up, while warm stone, anise, bay leaf, garrigue and tar notes fill in throughout. Dense but juicy, with a long, smoldering feel on the finish. Best from 2020 through 2040. 500 cases imported.
JS 96 (8/2018): There’s a very intense core of dark fruit. A deep, ripe and quite savory palate with spices and dark herbs. Bitter chocolate, too. Real depth and power here. Super-fresh, dark spice and cola give a real spark to the finish. Thrilling. A blend of four old-vine parcels from a variety of soils. Drink in 2020.
JLL ***** (10/2017): Deep red colour. The nose is opulent thanks to a glistening aroma led by sweet blackberry coulis, cassis de Dijon, the ripeness going deep. There is an air of black olives also, and the bouquet will chip in with new contributors over time. The palate is thorough, very well filled with essence of black fruits, a deep juice backed by live, smoky tannins. This is going to be both interesting and complex. It carries character from the rugged hot lands of the Vaucluse, and hits the line running. It’s an expressive, convincing Châteauneuf.
VM 94-96 (7/2018): Bright violet. Heady aromas of mineral-tinged dark berry liqueur, incense and cola, complicated by a suave floral nuance. Smoky and seamless on the palate, offering powerful, alluringly sweet black and blue fruit, spicecake, mocha and candied licorice flavors braced by juicy acidity. Closes with outstanding clarity, smooth tannins and floral-dominated persistence, leaving sexy floral pastille and star anise notes behind. Josh Raynolds. |

JD 98 (8/2019): The 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes is another killer effort from this estate. Coming from the La Janasse and La Crau lieux-dits and brought up in foudre, its deep purple color is followed by blockbuster notes of crème de cassis, blackberries, chocolate, graphite, and earthy, rocky, mineral-like nuances. It's deep and full-bodied, with a ripe, powerful yet balanced style and a great finish. A classic example of this cuvee. it's going to benefit from short-term cellaring and keep for two decades or more.
WA 97 (8/2019): The 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes derives from parcels planted on classic clay and galets roules soils. It's 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah and 5% other varieties. Tight, intense, even clenched, it's in need of several years' cellaring before it becomes truly enjoyable to drink. For now, those gorgeous black cherries are restrained behind a firm wall of tannins. Full-bodied and rich, this is ripe, it just requires patience. |
