| VM 89 (6/2008): Good full medium ruby. Dark plum, flint, mocha and smoke on the nose. Less fleshy than the zinfandel, with juicy acidity giving shape to the flavors of plum liqueur, chocolate and earth; a saline quality contributes to the impression of restrained sweetness. Finishes with substantial, slightly drying tannins. Stephen Tanzer. |

| WA 92 (12/2008): The 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain avoids the hard tannin and monolithic character that can be found in some 2006 Cabernets. Pure black raspberry, black currant, graphite, and subtle spicy oak dominate the aromatics. Full body, an admirable texture, a layered mouthfeel, and a long finish suggest this 2006 can be drunk now or cellared for a decade or more. |

WA 95+ (12/2009): The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon is their finest regular offering to date. This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon possesses a dense, full-bodied personality, an inky/purple color, plenty of graphite, subtle toast, blueberry and blackberry fruit, striking minerality, a layered texture (something Thomas Brown seems to get in all of his wines), and a long finish. It is the kind of Cabernet Sauvignon that seems to pass the torch of quality and greatness from the old boys who started here, but have now been dramatically surpassed in quality by newcomers such as Outpost and nearby neighbor O’Shaughnessy, to name a few. VM 91+ (5/2010): Good medium ruby. Dark berries, minerals and licorice on the nose. Sweet and creamy in the mouth, with noteworthy intensity to the cassis and black cherry fruit. Tannins are powerful but round and sweet. |

WA 93 (12/2011): The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon is a very typical wine from this appellation. Spices, grilled herbs and new leather add considerable complexity to the dark fruit. I especially admire the finesse and fabulous overall sense of harmony here. This is a highly representative Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. VM 90-93 (6/2011): Good ruby-red. Subdued but pure aromas of dark berries, violet and licorice; smells serious! Then dense, thick, rich and deep in the mouth, with dark flavors of cassis, blackberry, licorice and menthol. Boasts a large structure, with the rather powerful tongue-dusting tannins arriving early. This youthfully medicinal, classic Howell Mountain cabernet will need at least five years of cellaring upon its release. |

| WA 95 (10/2013): The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon (100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 20 months in 75% new French oak) reveals attractive scents of blackberries, black currants, charcoal and graphite, full-bodied flavors with impressive richness, a long, opulent mouthfeel and a heady finish. |

WA 96 (10/2014): The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon is a 650-case, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 20 months in 75% new French oak and 25% in older oak. True to the vintage, it is dramatic, ostentatious, savory and opulent. Its dense purple color is accompanied by sweet blackberry and blackcurrant fruit intermixed with notions of graphite, chocolate and vanillin. Lush, pure and voluptuously textured, it is an irresistible Cabernet to drink over the next 12-15+ years. VM 93 (12/2014): A dark, sumptuous beauty, the 2012 is primary and quite seamless for a Howell Mountain wine. Dark blue and black fruit, grilled herbs, menthol, sweet tobacco and licorice are all layered into the gracious finish. There is a lot to like in 2012, especially its fleshiness and early accessibility. This mid-weight Cabernet Sauvignon should drink well for the next 10-15 years or so. VM 92-94 (5/2014): (just blended the day before my visit): Saturated ruby-red. Very pure but reticent aromas of dark berries, black plum and minerals. Plush, silky and ripe, with terrific thickness supported by ripe acids and tannins. In a very warm style, but has the depth and stuffing for balance. Very long on the aftertaste. Outstanding potential. |

| VM 91+ (6/2008): (blended with 5% cabernet franc) Deep, saturated ruby. Highly aromatic nose combines red fruits, lilac and crushed rocks. Juicy and bright in the mouth, with a distinctly rocky minerality and bright acidity giving terrific lift and verve to the flavors of red fruits, flowers and spices. The tannins are serious but arrive late. A strongly mineral-driven, highly aromatic wine, the first commercial release under this label. |

| WA 94 (12/2008): From a 9-acre parcel, the full-bodied 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon True Vineyard includes some Cabernet Franc and Merlot in the blend. It reveals a floral cocktail-like bouquet intermixed with lead pencil shavings, blue and black fruits, good freshness, and laser-like focus. A powerful, rich, layered effort, it ranks a few notches above their regular offering. It should evolve for two decades. |

WA 98 (12/2009): From a single 9-acre parcel, the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon True Vineyard exhibits extraordinary aromas of acacia flowers and violets along with an irrefutable minerality, an abundance of blueberry and blackberry fruit, Outstanding texture, full-bodied richness, great depth, and ripe tannin. This Cabernet will benefit from 4-6 years of cellaring, and should evolve for 40 years. VM 93+ (6/2010): Full ruby. Precise aromas of dark berries, crushed rock, licorice and violet, plus a whiff of white flowers. Sweet, intensely flavored and deep, with a slightly exotic cast to its ripe fruit flavors. A serious wine from a relative cool site, unusually voluptuous in 2007 but with a strong underlying tannic spine calling for considerable patience. From vines planted on bedrock. |

WA 95 (12/2011): The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon True Vineyard is a much more opulent wine that in many ways is less typical of Howell Mountain. It is an especially seamless Cabernet Sauvignon loaded with dark fruit, flowers and mint, all of which are supported by insistent veins of minerality. All of the flavors build effortlessly to the muscular, inviting finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2021. VM 93-95 (6/2011): Good ruby-red. Complex, musky aromas of plum, redcurrant, smoked meat, mint, chocolate, dried flowers and wild herbs; conveys a strong rocky quality. Then rich, fat, sweet and seamless, with the impression of wildness carrying through on the palate. The big, building tannins reach the incisors, but here they are suaver and finer-grained than those of the basic Outpost cabernet. Finishes very long, with a savory minerality and a lovely light touch. Offers terrific potential. |

| WA 96 (10/2013): Even better is the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon True Vineyard, one of the candidates for wine of the vintage. It, too, is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and is given the same basic elevage as the other wines except the percentage of new French oak increases to 90%. There are 375 cases of this beauty, which may be the greatest Cabernet Sauvignon Outpost has made to date. Abundant notes of creme de cassis, blueberry, acacia flowers (or is it violets?), licorice and wet stones are followed by a full-bodied, superbly concentrated, multidimensional, endearingly textured wine with low acidity and ripe tannin. Drink it over the next 15-20 years. |

WA 96+ (10/2014): There are 375 cases of the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon True Vineyard, which is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 90% new French oak. This cuvee ratchets up the levels of structure and tannin, but shares similar notes of blackberries, blueberries, floral, forest floor and spice. It is a broad-flavored, multidimensional wine built like a skyscraper. However, unlike the regular Cabernet Sauvignon, this offering requires patience because of some significant tannin. Forget it for 4-5 years and drink it over the next two decades. VM 94+ (12/2014): The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon True Vineyard has closed down quite a bit since I last tasted it this past spring, which is probably a good thing for its long-term aging. Some of the typical 2012 vintage silkiness and polish is present, but the wine need at least a few years to become fully expressive. Hints of lavender, orange peel and sweet spices add intrigue on the supple, racy finish. This is a strong showing from Outpost. |

WA 99 (10/2015): Absolutely as close to perfection as one probably can get is the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon True Vineyard. This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is a selection of their very best material. This cuvee represents 375 cases aged 20 months in 90% new French oak. Opaque purple in color and more packed and concentrated than its sibling, it is full-bodied, with blackberry and blueberry fruit, perhaps a slight suggestion of charcoal and volcanic earth and burning embers. The wine has huge structure, massive extract and is as packed and stacked as a Cabernet Sauvignon can be. Forget it for 7-10 years and drink it over the following 40-50. VM 95+ (10/2015): The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon True Vineyard is every bit as impressive as it has been on the several occasions I have tasted it from cask. An exotic concoction of smoke, graphite, black cherries and lavender makes a strong impression in a towering, distinctive Howell Mountain wine that is going to need a good few years in bottle to truly come together. This is a fabulous showing from Outpost. Antonio Galloni. |

WA 100 (7/2019): Coming from the nine-acre True Vineyard up on Howell Mountain and produced from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the deep purple-black colored 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon True Vineyard strides confidently out of the glass with incredible poise and pedigree: warm cassis, blackcurrant cordial, baker’s chocolate, licorice and truffles commingled with hints of underbrush, violets, woodsmoke and stewed plums plus a waft of fragrant earth. Full-bodied, concentrated and built like a brick house, it has wonderfully firm, ripe, grainy tannins with a fantastic line of seamless freshness and a powerful, multilayered expression of place coming through on the epically long finish. A decadent beauty right now, this is going to be even more mind-blowing in 15 to 20+ years, and it should go on for 40 or more. JD 99 (1/2019): Another heavenly wine from this estate is the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon True Vineyard, 100% varietal from three blocks in the vineyard that was aged in 80% new French oak. Possessing truly thrilling purity in its crème de cassis and blueberry fruits, white flowers, and obvious minerality, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a layered, multi-dimensional texture, and building yet fine, polished tannins. This beauty has real Howell Mountain character, a complex, nuanced, yet powerful style, and a finish that won’t quit. Get it if you can. (Drink between 2019-2044). VM 96 (12/2018): The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon True Vineyard is one of the most complete wines I have ever tasted from Outpost. Medium in body almost shockingly refined for a young Howell Mountain Cabernet, the True Vineyard has so much to offer. In the glass, the True presents a stunning combination of intense plush fruit and vertical structure. I imagine the 2016 will be even better in a few years' time, but it is super-impressive and inviting even in the early going. (Drink between 2021-2031). Antonio Galloni. |

WA 95+ (1/2021): Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon True Vineyard has a deep garnet-purple color, prancing out of the glass with flamboyant notes of stewed plums, crème de cassis and baked blackberries, plus touches of bay leaves, lavender, unsmoked cigars, pencil lead and tilled earth. Full-bodied, the palate has a rock-solid foundation of firm, grainy tannins and a lively line, finishing long and lifted. JD 95 (1/2021): A big step up, the single vineyard 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon True Vineyard has beautiful cassis and blue fruits as well as plenty of foresty notes, pine, bay leaf, chocolate, and earthy minerality. This classic Howell Mountain Cabernet is medium to full-bodied and has a focused, elegant texture, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It's going to evolve for 20-25 years. (Drink between 2021-2046). VM 94 (1/2021): The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon True Vineyard is loaded with crème de cassis, chocolate, spice, licorice and sweet French oak. Floral overtones emerge over time, adding lift and a hugely appealing upper register to this luscious, opulent Cabernet. Polished, racy and silky to the core, the True Cabernet is a winner from Outpost. (Drink between 2023-2038). Antonio Galloni. |

WA 95 (10/2014): The 2012 True Vineyard Immigrant, a blend of 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Cabernet Franc, and 28% Merlot aged 20 months in two-thirds new French oak, offers notes of forest floor, mulberries, black cherries, blackcurrants and unsmoked cigar tobacco. With sweet tannin, and a deep, broad, savory, medium to full-bodied style, this pure, sexy red can be enjoyed over the next 5-8 years. VM 94 (12/2014): The 2012 Immigrant, Outpost's Cabernet Franc/Merlot blend, is another juicy, up-front wine with tons of near and medium term potential. Ample, rich and broad, the 2012 boasts superb depth and concentration. Dark blue and black-hued fruits open up on the mid-palate and finish, while a huge, super-ripe finish rounds things out. I imagine the 2012 will provide a wide window of drinking pleasure once it softens a touch. |
