VM 90 (6/1998): Deep red-ruby color. Aromas of raspberry, cassis, cigar tobacco, maple syrup, tar, pepper and smoky oak. Juicy and youthful in the mouth, with moderate flesh but insinuating, sweet flavor. Finishes with slightly dusty tannins and intriguing Indian spices. A serious, rather backward wine that requires at least five or six years of bottle aging. WA 89 (2/1998): The 1995 Latour a Pomerol should develop into an Outstanding wine, but it was revealing considerable grip and structure following bottling. It possesses a dark ruby/purple color, as well as a distinctive nose of smoked herbs, black fruits, iron, mulberries, and spice. The wine is generous, ripe, and mouthfilling, with medium to full body, and excellent richness and purity, but the wine's tannic clout and slight bitterness kept it from receiving an Outstanding score. Several years in the bottle could result in an excellent, perhaps Outstanding Latour a Pomerol. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2020. |

VM 90-92 (6/2000): Medium red-ruby. Superripe, almost surmuri aromas of cherry, raspberry, minerals and meat. Big, very rich and expansive; lovely firm-edged acids give the wine surprising vinosity and insinuating flavor. Impeccably balanced. The tannins are thoroughly buffered on the long finish. As superripe as this is, it still finishes with verve and grip. WA 90 (4/2001): A beautiful effort, the 1998 is one of the finest wines produced at this estate in the last thirty years. Revealing characteristics of vanillin, leather, highly-extracted black cherry fruit, and caramel, this deep, rich, full-bodied, powerful, layered, sweetly tannic 1998 is not as profound as I originally thought, but it is still an Outstanding wine. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2020. |

WA 91 (4/2003): An Outstanding, medium to full-bodied effort, the 2000 Latour a Pomerol exhibits a plum/purple color, admirable texture, medium to full body, and notes of caramels, truffles, sweet earth, and cola interwoven with black cherry liqueur and plums. Pure, deep, and classic, with moderately high tannin in the finish, patience is essential. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020. VM 90+ (6/2003): Good red-ruby. Very ripe nose of bitter cherry, raspberry, mocha and tobacco leaf. Concentrated and sweet, with excellent texture and volume and a gamey hint of leesy reduction. In an awkward stage today, showing a light leafy quality. Best on the very sweet, lingering finish, where the substantial tannins are nicely supported by the wine's flesh. |

VM 94+ (1/2019): The 2016 Latour à Pomerol is a very beautiful wine. It is also quite a bit more reticent than most Pomerols in this vintage. Savory herb, leather, rose petal, blood orange, cedar, tobacco, menthol and dried cherry lift from the glass. En primeur, the 2016 was quite sensual, whereas today is decidedly powerful and structured. It will be interesting to see where things go in the coming years. One thing is for sure. I would not dream of opening a bottle anytime soon. (Drink between 2026-2046). Antonio Galloni. WA 94 (11/2018): Blended of 96% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc, the medium garnet-purple colored 2016 Latour à Pomerol is a little reticent to begin, unfolding slowly to give glimpses of warm redcurrants, fresh plums and kirsch scents plus wafts of tar, garrigue and forest floor. Medium-bodied, the palate is tightly wound, offering great freshness and a firm frame of grainy tannins, finishing long and earthy. JD 93 (2/2019): The 2016 Château Latour a Pomerol (96% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc) is a beautiful, classic, downright sexy Pomerol. Plenty of black cherries, currants, chocolate, and earthy tobacco notes all emerge from this medium-bodied, plump, rounded beauty that has impeccable balance, ripe, present tannins, loads of sweet fruit, and a great finish. It's a beauty. (Drink between 2021-2041). |
