BH 92-94 (1/2012): (from .48 ha parcel of 65+ year old vines). This chameleonesque terroir can be either mostly Nuits or mostly Vosne but in 2010, it really does seem to be a beautiful hybrid of the two as the spicy and ripe dark berry fruit aromas also display a hint of the sauvage along with noticeably earth nuances. The flavors however are much more Nuits in character as they are rich, powerful, dense and concentrated with excellent phenolic maturity to the structural elements. This broad-shouldered effort possesses fine balance and I very much like the overall sense of harmony plus it should reward 12 to 15 years of cellar time. Drink 2022+. Sweet Spot Outstanding!
VM 91-93 (2/2012): (from 68-year-old vines featuring a high percentage of tiny millerande grapes): Good dark red with ruby tones. Black fruits, violet and strong oak notes of bitter chocolate and coffee. Fat, thick and powerful, with terrific depth of material and enough acid/tannin structure to give shape and freshness to the creamy middle. The blackberry and licorice flavors carry through on the long, rising finish. |

| BH 93-96 (1/2015): Like the Malconsorts this is a seriously complex wine with brilliantly layered aromas of spice, exotic tea, dark berries and dried floral hints. The texture of the medium-bodied flavors is ultra-fine yet there is plenty of power and verve to the lightly mineral-inflected and remarkably persistent finish. The Malconsorts is a stunner but there is quite simply another dimension of depth and length present here. Note that also like the Malconsorts this will need plenty of cellar time. Drink 2028+. |

| BH 94-97 (1/2017): An overtly floral, elegant and airy nose displays a huge array of spice elements on the red currant, cherry, tea, hoisin and lavender scents. The super-refined middle weight flavors possess a gorgeously sophisticated mouth feel that is at once silky yet packing plenty of punch that continues onto the harmonious finish where the persistence lasts for several minutes. I was knocked out by the palate impression because when RSV is "on", the finesse is unmatched by any of the other grands crus in Burgundy. This is quite simply a 'wow' wine. Drink 2030+. |

| BH 97 (1/2020): There are three barrels of the 2018 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru this year, two of them new and the third four years old. This was displaying some reduction at the time of my visit, although underneath there is intense black and red fruit plus a subtle marine influence of oyster shell and seaweed. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent red cherries and raspberry laced with blood orange. It feels very tight, a little muscular in style, a Grand Cru that is built for the long term. But will it surpass the spellbinding Malconsorts? Drink 2025-2050. |

VM 90 (3/2013): Medium red. Musky red berries, minerals, coffee and smoky oak on the complex, soil-driven nose. At once seamless and energetic, with a light touch to the sweet redcurrant and spice flavors. Brisk acidity gives this a penetrating character. Impressively long, structured village wine. BH 89 (5/2017): A very pretty and still relatively primary nose features ample spice nuances along with a pretty mix of both red and dark pinot fruit and whiffs of oak and violet. There is a lovely sense of verve and delineation to the delicious middle weight flavors that terminate in an ever-so-mildly austere but impressively persistent finish. This has arrived at a stage where it could be enjoyed now but I would be inclined to allow it another 2 to 4 years of bottle age first as the wine is still on the way up. Drink 2020+. |

WA 87-89 (1/2023): The 2021 Vosne-Romanée is more reserved than the open-knit Gevrey, exhibiting aromas of sweet plums, orange zest, petals and spices. Medium-bodied, lively and compact, with powdery tannins and bright acids, it will require more patience.
BH 89-91 (1/2023): A discreet dollop of wood sets off the spicy aromas of plum and purple fruit along with a floral hint. The delicious and vibrant flavors possess a velvety mid-palate yet manage to retain good delineation on the moderately austere and sneaky long finale. This lovely effort will need a few years.
VM 90-92 (1/2023): The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Village was showing a bit of reduction on the nose that made it difficult to read. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, gentle grip, quite tensile with an insistent grip. I appreciate the balance and poise here. A countervailing bitter note lends tension from start to finish. Very fine. Neal Martin. |

BH 90-93 (1/2005): (from a .74 ha parcel of 35 year old vines) Stylistically, this is quite similar to the Suchots but the flavor profile delivers more size, weight, punch, power and structure with wonderfully deep, muscular and sappy flavors plus there is real lift on the notably long finish. This is reference standard stuff, particularly so for the vintage as no one makes better Malconsorts. Drink 2013+. Outstanding!
VM 89+ (3/2006): Medium red. Aromas of blackberry, minerals, licorice and fresh herbs; showed a torrefaction quality as it opened in the glass. Broad, rich and chocolatey but not overly sweet, with flavors of cherry pit, cola and minerals. Conveys an impression of solid extract but comes across as rather backward and tight today, owing to its mineral component and its firm acids and tannins. |

| BH 93 (1/2008): A subtle trace of background wood frames black and blue fruit plus rose petal and violet-infused floral aromas that are extremely primary, indeed to the point of being borderline backward that introduce wonderfully fresh, vibrant and powerful flavors that are big, robust and well-muscled though not rustic with just superb dry extract on the palate saturating finish that goes on and on. Wow and this has so much potential that it could actually surprise to the upside, just be aware that this is a wine for the patient. Drink 2017+ Outstanding! |

BH 94 (1/2016): ( from a .74 ha parcel of 35+ year old vines; Cathiard noted that in 2013 he used a 30 day cuvaison.) A brooding and ultra-fresh nose exhibits notably ripe and strikingly complex aromas of dark cherry and raspberry along with violet, lilac and a gorgeous range of spice elements. This is a big and robust effort with excellent volume and mid-palate concentration that delivers plenty of punch and power on the overtly mineral-driven and hugely long finish. While this will be approachable after only 7 to 8 years it will need fully 15 to reach its full potential. Textbook Malconsorts though I stress that there is no point in buying this if you're not prepared to cellar it for at least 8 to 10 years. Drink 2025+. Outstanding!
VM 92+ (3/2016): Bright, saturated medium red. Captivating nose combines deep smoky minerality and sexy soil tones. Round on entry, then quite backward in the middle and much less showy than the Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Murgers. Today the wine's strong saline, smoky minerality is keeping the fruit in the background. Most impressive on the ripely tannic, very long finish. This will need considerable cellaring. BH 91-93 (1/2007): A positively gorgeous mix of exuberantly spicy red and black pinot fruit aromas that offer genuinely striking purity and transparency can also be found on the rich, textured and ultra refined middle weight flavors that are balanced and possess terrific mid-palate fat that completely buffers the rather firm tannic spine. But it's the sheer complexity that really drives this to the next level and it knocks on the door of grand cru quality. In sum, this transcends its usual quality level by a fair margin and should reward up to a decade of cellar time. Outstanding! Drink 2013+.
VM 90+ (4/2008): Good deep red. Smoky, ripe nose shows an almost liqueur-like quality. Fat, sweet and creamy, with superripe black cherry, raspberry and smoke flavors complicated by musky smoke and earth. Today this very rich wine comes off as chunkier than the village offering, with a bit less cut and lift. Finishes with chewy tannins and very good length.
WA 89-90+ (6/2007): From 60-year-old vines high up above Echezeaux, the Cathiard 2005 Vosne-Romanee En Orveaux is the most austere wine on this occasion, with a chalky mineral character and bright but slightly tart red fruit marked by candied and caramelized inflections and a considerable evidence of new wood. Smoked meat character emerges beneath the alternating bright and caramelized black fruits in the finish. Not that this wine is entirely unimpressive - far from it - but could it just be having a bad day, I wonder? Also recommended: 2005 Bourgogne. |

VM 91 (4/2007): Palish bright red. Pungent aromas of raspberry, minerals and orange peel; this is more like it. Sweet and silky in the mouth, with explosive flavors of raspberry, spices and minerals, and a hint of chocolatey torrefaction. Ripe acids prolong the tangy, spicy finish. Very sexy wine, showing much better today than the Orveaux.
BH 90-92 (1/2006): Exuberantly spicy and transparent red and black pinot fruit aromas combine with silky, broad and sweet middle weight flavors that in contrast to the expressiveness of the nose are on the reserved and tight side. There is excellent depth of material with palate staining sap and Outstanding length. This should age and improve for up to a decade but drink well for another one. Outstanding! Drink 2012+. |
