BH 94 (12/2012): The heavy wood spice that dominated the concentrated black fruit from cask has now largely, if not completely, been absorbed and leads to round, sexy, seductive, earthy, nicely rich and detailed flavors of excellent intensity and fine length. This is still relatively primary though the depth is slowly emerging and while it will undoubtedly be a long term cellar candidate, it should be close to its majority in another 7 to 10 years. Note that I have upgraded my view of this wine considerably as I was not at all sure that it could successfully integrate this much wood but indeed it has. Tasted several times recently with consistent results. Try from 2016+. VM 90 (4/2002): Good full red. Aromatic nose combines redcurrant, iron and minerals. The sweetest and most expansive of the trio of 1999s I sampled, with firm acids giving shape to the flavors. Here the broad tannins hit the palate rather late, and there plenty of stuffing to support them. Stephen Tanzer. |

| VM 89+ (3/2004): Medium red. Deep, ripe aromas of redcurrant, smoke and earth. Fat, sweet and sexy, with flavors of plum, earth, smoke and Oriental spices. Nicely supple, broad wine with very good persistence. Rouget says this is closing down today. I’d wait five years or so. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 88-91 (1/2020): This too has just enough reductive character to muddle the shades of fruit, earth and floral-inflected aromas. There is once again a beguiling sense of verve present on the attractively textured medium-bodied flavors that terminate in a firm but not really rustic or youthfully austere finale. This too is quite good and worth considering. VM 91-93 (1/2020): The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Village is matured in 30% new oak, although Emmanuel Rouget took this sample from a new barrel. It has a refined, pure nose, not powerful yet finely tuned, with subtle floral aromas. The well-balanced palate has a core of red fruit laced with blood orange and citrus peel notes that carry through to the lively, effervescent finish. I am deeply impressed by this Village Cru. Chapeau! Neal Martin. |

BH 87-89 (1/2022): Once again, the nose is very ripe yet manages to retain reasonable freshness on the aromas black raspberry coulis, cassis and plenty of Savigny style earth. The rich, suave and mouth coating flavors possess fine mid-palate density while delivering solid length on the rustic finale. This too is impressive in its fashion but it's certainly not typical. (Drink starting 2024). VM 86-88 (12/2021): The 2020 Savigny-lès-Beaune Village had a bit too much VA on the nose for me and rather smudged the definition, the cassis and black cherry fruit. The palate was likewise a little too candied and rich, the Les Lavières that followed showing much more precision and terroir expression. A quasi-Syrah-like finish. I admit to being flummoxed by this cuvée from barrel. Neal Martin. |

JM 95-98 (11/2019): A great vintage for these cooler sites. What an explosion of fruit! A dense full but not exaggerated purple, then the wine goes back into its shell a little, but with gorgeous harmony, a match for his neighbour’s wine. How to explain all the fruits? More on the darker side but intense pinpricks of red notes too and a most harmonious, indeed blissful, finish. VM 95-97 (1/2020): The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Cros Parantoux 1er Cru, matured in 100% new oak, has a more introverted, backward bouquet than the Beaumonts. It offers precocious blackberry and raspberry preserve scents, then crushed stone aromas. This feels mercurial as it develops floral aromas of incense and crushed violet with time in glass. The palate is well balanced, intense and supremely detailed, and there is outstanding tension and real heft on the finish. This Cros Parantoux is a paradigm of the old "iron fist in a velvet glove" cliché. Neal Martin. BH 93-96 (1/2020): Once again there is reduction present and here it's enough to mask the fruit though wisps of spice are perceptible. Otherwise there is fine richness and volume to the velvet-textured medium-bodied flavors that brim with both minerality and sappy dry extract before culminating in a very firm, youthfully austere and gorgeously persistent finish. But what impresses me the most is the strikingly fine depth and this outstanding effort should amply reward extended keeping. Drink 2033+. |
