VM 92 (4/2001): Good bright red-ruby color. Knockout nose combines cherry, raspberry, redcurrant, underbrush, licorice, flowers and earth. Penetrating and quite fine; offers a three-dimensional texture but is not really showing its underlying fat today. Intriguing note of cinnamon in the mouth. Finishes very long and complex, with dusty tannins and compelling sweetness. This should be superb with eight to ten years of bottle aging. BH 91 (4/2007): Exquisite fruit that, in contrast to certain recent vintages here, positively shouts grand cru caliber fruit. The flavor profile is one of a certain classy, middleweight fighter's grace and athleticism rather than a heavyweight's power. There are plenty of ripe, mouth coating tannins lurking beneath the pinot baby fat. Much like the 99 in that it's not especially big and certainly not highly extracted but it is very persistent on the finish with elegance and class to burn. An unqualified success. Try from 2010+. WA 82 (10/2000): Crisp and fresh, with citrus, lemon and cassis bush character, and a hint of herbs. But the aromas are full of pretty red berries, and the wine is pure and clean. Medium-bodied. Give it some time. Best from 2001 through 2005. 2,165 cases made. |

| BH 93 (3/2004): Still incredibly fresh and backward but otherwise the note from 750 ml is accurate: Reserved black cherry notes and pinot fruit followed by medium weight flavors of bacon, smoke and sappy pinot extract all highlighted by an intense minerality and fine length. This has added a good deal of weight and seems more powerful than before yet it remains very stylish and classy with excellent potential. |

BH 94 (1/2008): A much more deeply pitched nose of dark berry fruit, spice, earth, a hint of animale and an overlay of obvious minerality complements perfectly the rich, full and sweet broad-scaled yet elegant flavors that are solidly structured and firm on the detailed and wonderfully intense finish. This powerful, long and serious vintage of Clos des Lambrays is built for the medium plus term, which is to say out to 20 years of improvement followed by another 20 of plateau. Drink: 2017+ VM 93+ (4/2008): Medium red. Riper, darker nose features blueberry, spices and a sexy earthy perfume. Supple and juicy, with excellent spicy lift to the blackberry, blueberry, game and mineral flavors. Sweeter and denser than the village example but more noteworthy for its insinuating soil tones than for sheer size-or is this simply in a shell today? The long, resounding, dry finish features very fine-grained tannins and lovely lift. This, too, seems to be shutting down in the bottle. But it should be long-lived. WA 91-93 (4/2007): The 2005 Clos de Lambrays leads with hints of cedar and spruce resin (or is that actually ripe Pinot stems?), bitter-sweet florality, pungent spices, black tea, salt spray, iodine and Cote-Rotie-like smoked meats. Plum and cherry - with a strong dose of skins and pits -- almost come as an aromatic afterthought. A subtly bitter, tart edge follows the flowers, meat and minerals onto the palate and helps lend profile and pungent energy to the wine, which sticks tenaciously to the palate as if it were exactly the sort of resin suggested in its aroma. This is serious in a rather somber way, and the abundance of tannin and sheer density of this wine suggest one wait 6-8 years before peeking beneath another cork. But I strongly suggest it will make excellent old bones, so my score could easily mislead. (I find the peppery, spicy, highly satisfying 2004 very nearly as good today, not to mention more charming and a better bet for the short run.) The average age of vines is quite old, incidentally, but Brouin refuses to print “vieilles vignes" on the label because he insists (rightly) that these two unregulated words are grossly abused. |

| BH 93 (1/2012): (produced from two large parcels of differing vine age - one that is approximately two-thirds of the blend and is now 45 years of age and a second, smaller group of vines that is approximately 20+ years of age; vinified with 100% whole clusters.) An intensely floral and spicy nose that is wonderfully elegant and admirably pure speaks of red currant, blue berry, game, smoke and warm earth. The silky-textured, precise and mineral-inflected medium-bodied flavors possess copious extract that does a fine job of buffering the very firm tannins and allowing for perfect balance on the mouth coating and impressively persistent finish. A seductive and relatively accessible Clos des Lambrays that should be approachable with only a decade of cellar time yet last for 25 to 40 years. Drink 2021+. |

BH 94 (1/2013): (produced from two large parcels of differing vine age - one that is approximately two-thirds of the blend and is now 45 years of age and a second, smaller group of vines that is approximately 20+ years of age; vinified with 100% whole clusters.) A highly expressive and very broad nose of superb aromatic complexity that includes earth, game, spice, red currant, plum, violets and a hint of the sauvage. The round and supple flavors possess outstanding detail and while the complexity doesn't quite match that of the exquisite nose, it's not far behind and this culminates in a beautifully balanced and harmonious finish that delivers striking persistence. I also had a chance to retaste the 2009 and it is bigger, richer and more powerful while the 2010 is much more of a wine of finesse and refinement. In a word, beautiful. Drink 2022+. VM 93+ (3/2013): Good bright, deep red. Very closed but pure and stylish nose hints at cherry liqueur and spices, with elements of mulch and pepper emerging with air. Dense, tactile and large-boned, but with its flesh somewhat suppressed today. Finishes saline, concentrated and thick, with substantial granular tannins. This needs at least six to eight more years in bottle to expand, and may well deserve an even higher score by 2020. Stephen Tanzer. |

Classic Clos des Lambrays in its combination of red and black fruits, dried flowers, minerals, spices, licorice and earth and its pungent inner-mouth energy. This wine actually reminded me of a 1978! Finishes with firm, noble tannins and terrific piquant length. This is actually easier to taste today than the village wine but should evolve very slowly. Stephen Tanzer. WA 93 (9/2016): Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru is a divisive wine, not one for those seeking layer upon layer of fruit. It is more mature in appearance than its peers, perhaps missing the fruit intensity one would anticipate from a grand cru of this stature. There is something a little "dusty attic" here although that ebbs away with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly leafy entry, gentle and elegant, full of personality. It is missing the weight and volume that a more benevolent vintage would have lent and it does not quite possess the structure or substance to suggest long-term. Yet, it remains a well-crafted and to put it prosaically, is absolutely delicious. BH 92-94 (1/2015): (produced from two large parcels of differing vine age - one that is approximately two-thirds of the blend and is now 50+ years of age and a second, smaller group of vines that is approximately 25+ years of age.) Here too there is gentle wood setting off a similar if more complex nose that displays more prominent floral and spice scents. There is very good volume to the utterly delicious medium weight and wonderfully vibrant flavors that possess really fine delineation before culminating in a mineral-inflected, saline and focused finish. I very much admire the sleek mouth feel as well as the impeccable balance. Lovely juice that is moderately structured and a bit less youthfully austere than usual. Drink 2025+. |

As usual, there is something very natural, unimposing and refined on the nose: blackberry and briary, a hint of graphite, a subtle leafiness maybe, and yet delineated and very pure. The palate is lively and energetic with crisp tannin, black rather than red fruit, linear and very classic in style with what you might call a "cool" marine-influenced finish that has fine salinity. What a great Clos des Lambrays that will put a smile on the face of those that adore refined Burgundy. VM 92-94 (1/2016): (Taupenot makes less than a barrel of wine annually from a tiny parcel planted in 1975 at the bottom of the Clos des Lambrays): Slightly hazy medium red. A deep earthy perfume complements aromas of raspberry, spices and dried flowers. A bit imploded but surprisingly fresh and vibrant on the palate, with flavors of raspberry and flowers tweaked by a pungent blood orange note. The very long, slowly mounting finish features slightly tight tannins, a subtle saline quality and considerable finesse."This is never a powerful style, but more about length and charm," noted Taupenot. Still, this beauty will need at least seven or eight years of bottle aging. WA 93-95 (12/2017): The 2016 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru includes 85% whole-bunch fruit and is matured in 50% new oak. It was picked around 24 to 29 September. It has a fresh and discrete bouquet at first, the whole bunch influencing the red fruit, infusing scents of autumn leaves and Earl Grey into the mix. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, good grip in the mouth, building with time to a very composed, classically styled, quite persistent and lightly spiced finish whereby the whole bunch is completely subsumed by the fruit. Wonderful. VM 92-94 (1/2018): (38 hectoliters per hectare produced; vinified with 85% whole clusters, down from a normal 100%; aging in 50% new oak, vs. 33% for the premier cru and village wine): Healthy dark red. Captivating perfume of red berries, spices and flowers lifted by a sexy herbal element from the stems. Silky, dense and concentrated, showing terrific precision and a sappy personality to its complex flavors of red berries, brown spices, underbrush and dried flowers. Lovely fruit intensity here. Very firm and built to age but even today there is nothing hard about this grand cru. Finishes very long and sweet, with refined tannins. I'm not sure that this wine will ever go through an extended sullen phase in bottle. Stephen Tanzer. There is first-rate punch to the bigger and richer yet still well-defined medium weight plus flavors that possess very good if not exceptional length on the nicely complex finish. This is certainly pretty but it doesn't appear, at least at this early juncture, to have the class and sheer substance of either the 2014 or the 2015. Time will of course tell but for the moment, I would describe the 2016 Clos des Lambrays as very good rather than excellent. Drink 2028+. |

BH 92-95 (1/2023): An intensely floral also freely reveals aromas of rose petal, violet, lavender, spiced plum and a whiff of newly turned earth. The sleek and precise middleweight flavors also possess a caressing yet quite punchy palate feel while displaying outstanding length on the focused, moderately austere and built-to-age finale. This is also really very good and a wine that should easily repay 12 to 15 years of keeping. VM 96-98 (1/2023): The 2021 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru is tasted from separate cuvées and as a final blend. Containing around 80% whole bunches and 60% new oak, it has a beautifully-defined bouquet with dark berry fruit, bay leaf and a touch of white pepper that unfurls in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins, raspberry and red plum, sage and white pepper, leading to a very harmonious finish with a hint of underlying citrus fruit. Heavenly. Neal Martin. |

VM 90+ (1/2018): Moderately saturated medium red. Very ripe but not roasted on the nose, with its raspberry fruit complicated by spices and sexy earth tones, plus a slightly metallic whiff of cassis bud reduction. Juicy, spicy and savory but still a bit youthfully imploded for village wine. At once less sweet and less floral than the 2016 version, but if that wine is more fun, this one is deeper. Finishes with a firm tannic spine. (Drink between 2022-2029). Stephen Tanzer. BH 90 (1/2018): A notably ripe yet agreeably fresh nose offers up notes of various dark berries, spice, floral elements and discreet earth nuances. The notably rich medium-bodied flavors possess a lovely mouthfeel thanks to the solid mid-palate concentration, all wrapped in a velvety yet punchy and refreshing finale that is sufficiently firm to warrant holding this for at least a few years first. BH 90-92 (1/2023): An overtly floral-suffused nose speaks of red cherry, raspberry and a hint of herbal tea. The supple, caressing and succulent medium-bodied flavors possess a lovely sense of underlying tension on the lightly stony, focused and lingering finale. VM 91-93 (1/2023): The 2021 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Loups 1er Cru contains half Premier Crus (La Riotte and Clos Sorbé) and the other half from younger vines in Clos des Lambrays planted in 2000 that is likely to enter the Grant Vin next year. Including 50% whole bunches, it has an attractive dark berry fruit and subtle briny scents on the nose. Good intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins, a mixture of red and black fruit with a very precise finish enhanced by the stem addition. This is a much more serious wine than the Village Cru. | BH 92-95 (6/2022): The more elegant nose is both cooler and more classic in style with its overtly floral-suffused aromas of apple, pear, spice and just sliced citrus. There is excellent energy and delineation to the more mineral-driven middle weight flavors that stain the palate on the impressively long and notably more complex finale. This is excellent and a wine that should repay out to a decade of keeping. Drink 2028+. |
