VM 91-93 (1/2017): Healthy full red. Cherry and boysenberry fruit aromas are lifted by rose petal and violet, with a gamey nuance adding complexity. Silky on entry, with its cherry and raspberry flavors enlivened by pungent minerality. In a distinctly rocky yet smooth style, like a baby Griottes. Stephen Tanzer.
BH 90-93 (1/2017): (from a .21 ha parcel planted in 1919.) This is also strikingly fresh and bright with an aromatic profile that runs towards the red side of the fruit spectrum along with more evident earth and game nuances. There is a bit more volume and power to the equally mineral-inflected flavors that trade size and weight for slightly less precision on the equally long but less refined finale. This is more obviously Gevrey in character. Drink 2025+. Outstanding! |

| BH 90-93 (1/2019): Once again there is a lovely coolness and restraint to the quite pure aromas of gently earthy red and dark currant scents. The vibrant and beautifully textured medium-bodied flavors possess a caressing and rich mouthfeel though the solidly long and complex finish progressively tightens up as it sits on the palate. This should be approachable young but amply reward mid-term cellaring. |

WA 94-95 (4/2007): Fourrier’s 2005 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St.-Jacques reveals a gorgeous aroma of black fruits, rose, truffle, tea and musk, a marrowy, creamy richness of texture, and a riveting finishing complexity of fruit, meat, flowers, pungent spices and minerals. If this is not a case of progression into the territory of grand cru quality, I don’t know what is. I would plan to start following this from ten years out and anticipate at least a second decade of improvement. (With a vintage-typical, yet in this instance, somehow not disruptive contrast of milky texture with tart fresh fruit, and displaying strikingly overt minerality, the 2004 rendition of this wine is also well worth a decade of cellaring.)
VM 94+ (4/2008): Good deep red. Knockout nose combines raspberry, mocha, roast coffee, game and minerals, accented by mint and oak spice. The palate offers a lush wall of thick fruit that saturates the entire palate without leaving any impression of weight. This densely packed beauty finishes extremely long and smooth, with utterly suave tannins and superb aromatic lift.
BH 94 (2/2013): Initially this was heavily reduced and required a full 45 minutes in a vigorously shaken decanter to really dissipate the funk. Like many '05s at this stage in their evolution this remains reserved and tight but the concentration and balance is seriously impressive. That said, the reserved nose, while offering glimpses of what is to come, it closed and the supporting tannins are still very, very firm. I remain highly optimistic that in time this is going to be a genuinely great Clos St. Jacques but for now it's basically infanticide, even with extended aeration. I would advise just letting this slumber away for the better part of another decade as it's going to need it but when it finally matures, we're in for a real treat! Try from 2020+ |

| BH 93 (1/2014): This also displays a deft touch of wood that surrounds the ultra-fresh and ultra-elegant, pure and superbly well-layered aromas that offer a broad array of both red and blue fruit, stone, exotic tea and dried floral hints. There is a striking vibrancy and intensity to the firmly mineral-driven medium weight flavors that possess simply gorgeous depth on the perfectly balanced and linear finish that delivers outstanding length. | VM 94 (3/2017): Healthy medium red. Sexy, complex aromas of strawberry, crushed stone and rose petal convey a captivating combe coolness. Wonderfully concentrated and bright, combining classic 2014 salty minerality with superb fruit intensity. Boasts the kind of restrained generosity of fruit that reminds me of the '99s in the early going. A compelling, saline vin de terroir but not a powerhouse. VM 96 (12/2023): The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru, which I never tasted from barrel, has a sublime bouquet that is the paragon of Pinot's transparency. Perfumed with joyous red fruit, crushed stone and a touch of wilted rose petal, the aromatics whisk you to the famed walled vineyard. The palate is beautifully balanced with slightly chalky tannins and a surfeit of energy and tension. It’s quite linear and strict toward the finish that just loses its initial crystalline quality. But still, this is a very great wine from Jean-Marie Fourrier. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting. Neal Martin.
JM 98 (9/2023): Solid, rich dark crimson. Dark berry fruit, again evidently quite ripe yet showing a sense of balance. This style of bouquet I find enormously pleasing. Layers of flavour on the palate, a vibrant minerality, nuanced all the way through, no excessive alcohol, though the fruit is certainly ripe, and a velvet touch to the finish that is matched by a fresher feel. Brilliant wine! |

BH 89-92 (1/2007): This relatively obscure 1er always displays an elegant and upper register nose dominated by cool red fruit aromas and obvious minerality that gives way to fresh and ultra pure middle weight flavors and a detailed, reserved and intense finish where the mineral character is almost pungent. This is a beautiful effort that defines finesse. Outstanding! Drink: 2013+
WA 89-91 (4/2007): From one of Gevrey’s highest and steepest vineyards (north of town between Champeaux and Combes au Moines) comes a 2005 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Goulots displaying aromas of cherry and plum with their pits, savory meatiness, concentrated pit fruits and slightly grainy tannins on the palate, and a gripping finish with deep meatiness, stony mineral suggestions and bitter-sweet fruit. This took a while to open up in the glass and probably hadn’t finished trying to reveal its many facets before I was forced to proceed to the next wine. One might take that as a hint to give it patience in one’s cellar as well. |

It has a clean, precise and very focused bouquet that gains intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, plenty of tart red fruit laced with cedar and graphite, leading to a pointed finish that feels persistent and classic in style. Excellent. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit. Fine acidity, just slightly confit-like towards the finish that erodes a little of the precision compared to other cuvees, though there is satisgfying length. (Drink between 2025-2040). Neal Martin.
BH 88-90 (1/2022): Ripe and nicely layered aromas are comprised by notes of poached plum, warm earth and a whisper of the sauvage. The juicy and fleshy medium weight flavors possess both good volume and verve before terminating in a mildly rustic and warm finale. (Drink starting 2027). |
