WA 100 (8/2007): An absolutely monumental wine is the 2005 Syrah Lorraine Vineyard. The finest Syrah John Alban has yet produced, its inky/ruby/purple hue is accompanied by gorgeously sweet aromas of flowers, blueberries, black raspberries, blackberries, and subtle hints of smoky oak, bacon fat, and licorice. In the mouth, the wine is seamlessly constructed with fabulous fruit, brilliant concentration, and virtually perfect balance. Moreover, the finish lingers on the palate for over 60 seconds. It should drink beautifully for 15 or more years. WS 96 (11/2009): Rich and full-bodied, offering a bold, ripe, complex mix of mocha, spicy berry, beef and peppery scents. For all its size and depth of flavor, this is elegant and polished, ending with supple tannins and tar and mineral notes. Smooth, long and expansive. Drink now through 2016. 630 cases made. VM 95 (12/2009): Vivid purple. Extremely complex aromas of black raspberry, cassis, smoky minerals and dried flowers, with a building note of cured meat. Broad, sappy and gently sweet, offering succulent dark berry flavors and a kick of bracing minerality. The smoky note comes on strong on the extremely long, spicy, sweet finish. This wine was bottled after 42 months in barrel. |

JD 98 (9/2021): Reminding me of a great vintage of Guigal's Côte Rôtie La Mouline, the 2017 Syrah Lorraine is brilliant stuff that ranks with the finest Syrahs in the vintage. Dense purple-hued, with a kaleidoscope-like nose of red and black fruits, spring flowers, camphor, spice, and ground pepper, this beauty hits the palate with a full-bodied, multi-dimensional texture, a stacked mid-palate, ripe tannins, and a thrilling finish that keeps you (me, anyway) coming back to the glass. From a more challenging vintage for the Central Coast and all of California, this is a testament to the talent and genius of John Alban. Drink this spectacular Syrah any time over the coming 25-30 years. |

JD 99 (8/2020): All Grenache, the 2016 Pandora is another stunning wine that will probably merit a triple-digit rating in 3 to 5 years. Its deep purple/plum color is followed by a gorgeous perfume of black raspberries, licorice, ground pepper, spring flowers, and smoked earth. Showing more spice with time in the glass, it delivers full-bodied richness and the magical sense of elegance paired with power that only Grenache can do. Give bottles a few years in the cellar and enjoy over the following 15-20 years. |

WA 96 (8/2007): The intense, inky/ruby/purple-tinged 2005 Syrah Reva Vineyard boasts gorgeous notes of graphite, smoke, roasted meat, herbs, and oodles of blackberries and creme de cassis. This full-bodied, fabulously rich Syrah is a superb success for the vintage. The good news is, there are 2,500 six-packs. WS 94 (11/2007): Rich and beefy, with plush smoke, blueberry, blackberry and spicy, leathery scents. Fans out and gains depth and complexity, picking up exotic spice notes. Best from 2008 through 2014. 2,500 cases made. VM 94 (12/2007): Glass-staining purple. Explosively perfumed bouquet of spicy red and dark berries, olive, tobacco, iodine and charred meat; I could smell this for hours. Spicy blackberry, cassis and bitter cherries are complicated by violet pastille and suave vanilla and cinnamon. Gains weight but retains clarity on the long, juicy finish. The tannins make a late appearance but are quickly buried under the sheer volume of fruit. |
