BH 90 (4/2008): A completely different aromatic profile presents itself with a much more fruit-driven yet also more elegant nose that runs more toward cool red pinot and raspberry and while there is a touch of earth, it's subtle. The medium weight flavors are very Beaune in character with a rich, sweet and generous mouth feel and a detailed and mineral suffused finish. This delicate offering is on the linear side at present but packed with upside potential and vibrancy that should reward 6 to 8 years of cellar time. |

BH 92 (4/2008): This is riper if less elegant with serious and reserved aromas of red berry fruit, warm earth, subtle spice notes and hints of smoke that lead to rich, full, punchy and relatively powerful flavors that possess absolutely superb depth of material on the wonderfully long finish. This is built to age and will require at least a decade to arrive at its majority. This is an extremely impressive and powerful Beaune. Outstanding! Drink 2015+. VM 91 (4/2008): Good deep red. Brooding aromas of medicinal black cherry and licorice. Big, rich and chewy, combining impressive volume with sweet but vibrant flavors of black cherry and currant. The sweet, youthful finish features lovely broad tannins. This left behind a truffley nuance in the empty glass. WA 90-91+ (6/2007): The vines of Lafarge’s 2005 Beaune Greves have passed seventy years of age, and on this occasion they seem uninterested in trying to charm or cajole the taster. The pure black fruit essences on display in this formidably dense Pinot smell and taste as though they were macerated on chalk pebbles and fruit pits. High-toned notes of herbal distillates in the nose transform themselves on the palate into a bitter-sweet medicinal character. Abundant, fine-grained tannin suggests the need to hold this for 5-7 years before even attempting to revisit it. Right now, there seems to be a virtual avalanche of stones blocking the path to fruit in the finish. Still, given the concentration and ripeness of raw material and the track record of this site in the Lafarge hands, I would hesitate to bet against it in 2005 of all vintages. |

VM 92 (4/2013): Good medium red. Shy but pure aromas of cherry, menthol, licorice and stone. Offers a nice combination of sweetness and vinosity, and a lush texture to its redcurrant and spice flavors. Lovely intensity without any excess weight. Rich and taut in the style of the year, and seriously long on the aftertaste. WA 89-91 (2/2012): The 2010 Beaune Les Aigrots is subtle and introverted at first, then explodes on the mid-palate and finish. It boasts lovely inner perfume and sweetness as the aromas and flavors flesh out in the glass. This is a beautiful showing from Lafarge. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. BH 89-92 (4/2012): (from 40+ year old vines.) A very fresh and distinctly cool nose offers up notes of bright red currant and plenty of stone influence that continues onto the detailed and racy yet fleshy medium weight flavors that possess fine balance and excellent persistence on dusty and refined finish. This is an elegant Beaune with exceptionally fine tannins. Drink 2018+. |

BH 91-94 (4/2023): A more deeply pitched though still equally fresh nose more grudgingly displays its aromas of spice, violet, dark currant and newly turned earth. There is excellent vibrancy to the more concentrated and muscular larger-scaled flavors that still manage to remain relatively refined thanks to the dense but fine tannins shaping the strikingly long, balanced, compact and quite serious finale. This beauty of a Grèves is potentially outstanding and should age accordingly. |

BH 93 (4/2009): (from 45+ year old vines that sit just above Champans). Here the aromas are equally ripe with an earthier and more deeply pitched aromatic profile that serves up a strikingly pretty array of red raspberry and currant, plum and violets that introduces, rich, full and more powerful flavors that possess a gorgeous mouth feel and ample mid-palate concentration that buffers the most prominent tannins on the driving, energetic and explosive finish. As it usually is, this is the best in show in 2006. Drink 2014+. Outstanding! WA 93 (12/2009): An explosively-concentrated 2006 Volnay Clos Des Chenes mingles cherry, redcurrant, ginger, orange peel, iodine, and bitter-sweet herbal and cherry pit concentrate, projecting confidence in its role as the Lafarge flagship. A wealth of largely ineffable but prominently chalky and saline mineral nuances lends intrigue, while hints of marzipan and caramel sneak onto the back palate, enhancing the sense of ripeness to this wine's sappy fundament of fruit. It manages to be texturally plush while displaying fine-grained underlying tannic structure, and finishes with detonative dynamic of tumbling fruits and minerals, uniting both refreshing brightness and a persistent sense of richness. Here is one 2006 that will surely be worth following for 12-15 years. VM 92+ (4/2009): Good medium red. High-pitched aromas of cherry, mint and flowers. Supple and seamless, with nicely integrated acidity giving the wine an impression of energy. I like this Volnay's impression of medicinal reserve. A very rich and deep wine, building impressively on the back end and finishing with noteworthy subtlety. Youthfully unevolved, with a lot more to come |

BH 90 (4/2017): (from 45+ year old vines that sit just above Champans.)This is also beautifully well-layered with its broad-ranging nose of red currant, pomegranate, earth, floral and spice-suffused aromas. As is usually the case this is both bigger and more powerful if not quite as elegant with a similar level of mid-palate concentration where the copious dry extract does a reasonably good if not perfect job of buffering the firm tannic spine on the impressively long if slightly edgy finish. This has many positive attributes but the balance isn't quite perfect. Drink 2022+. |

BH 93-95 (4/2018): Lafarge explained that this was made from fruit that was destemmed by hand using what the Burgundians call a claie en osier, or a lattice made of wicker that was placed on top of a fermenter; this approach was sometimes used in the 19th C). A dazzlingly pure, fresh and soaring nose features notes of essence of red cherry, currant, spice and soft floral scents. While the medium weight flavors do not have the same size and power of the Clos des Chênes, they are notably finer with a sleek muscularity and terrific length on the highly refreshing and energetic finish. This is really lovely stuff and a complete knock-out. Drink 2031+. Don't miss! Outstanding! |

JD 98 (11/2021): The 2018 Volnay 1er Clos Du Chateau Des Ducs is more expressive and showy right out of the gate and has a complex, sexy, incredibly impressive style that's a joy to drink. Ripe cherries, mulberries, rose petals, Asian spices, dried herbs, and incense all emerge from this beauty, and it's as seamless and layered as they come, with ripe, velvety tannins, no hard edges, medium to full body, and flawless balance. It's already drinking nicely yet will cruise for 20+ years in cold cellars. VM 92 (11/2022): The 2018 Volnay Clos du Château des Ducs 1er Cru has a little more transparency and elegance on the nose compared to its peers, brambly red fruit with a touch of sous-bois and tobacco leaf. The palate is well-defined with fine tannins. A crisp line of acidity imparts tension with more sapidity than its peers. Harmonious, fine weight in the mouth with a Pommard-like grip on the finish, this is a finely crafted, commendable Volnay, one that defies the negative tropes of the vintage. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting. Neal Martin. |

VM 90-92 (1/2013): (from a mix of 40- and 60-year-old vines): Good bright red. Less showy on the nose today than the 1er cru, with a distinctly darker fruit character and strong spiciness. Then juicy and sweet but a bit youthfully dry-edged on the palate, with noteworthy definition to the flavors of black cherry and licorice. Finishes with very good length and backbone. This wine should benefit from the sweetening influence of a racking. Stephen Tanzer. |

JD 95 (11/2021): The 2018 Volnay 1er Les Mitans comes from a tiny 0.39 hectare of vines planted in 1952 and 1976 and located on a south-facing slope. The soils here are more brown clay with some underlying limestone, and the wine is destemmed and brought up in 15% new French oak. It's another wine that needs air, continuing to show well over the multiple days I had the bottle open. Beautiful ripe black cherry and black raspberry fruits as well as darker, earthy herbs, camphor, and spicy wood all emerge from the glass, and it's medium-bodied, with a wonderfully pure, elegant style, nicely integrated acidity, and outstanding length. As with the other 2018s here, the purity and precision are spot on. Give bottles 2-4 years and enjoy over the following 10-15. |

WA 90-91+ (6/2007): From four parcels proximate in geography and potential quality to their uphill, premier cru neighbors comes the Lafarge 2005 Volnay Vendanges Selectionnees. Deeper, darker and denser in color, structure and flavor than the “regular" Volnay at this address (and as such more typical of this vintage), this offers generous black cherry and plum with tart fruit skin and bitter fruit pit adjuncts. A rich meatiness puts one in mind a bit of Pommard (not surprising given that two of the vineyards incorporated into this bottling lie on the communal line), as does this wine’s firm tannic backbone. Wet stone and humus notes add complexity to the persistently bright fruit and rich meatiness of an almost severely-concentrated finish that introduces a somewhat detracting and hopefully temporary blocking note of bitterness. Certainly the “regular" village wine is more fun to drink today. BH 90 (4/2008): A notably ripe yet elegant and refined nose offers red pinot and black cherry aromas nuanced by hints of earth and animale that can also be found on the rich, velvety and equally serious medium plus weight flavors that coat the mouth with dense but fine tannins and admirable levels of dry extract. Recommended though note that this will need at least 6 to 8 years to really be at its best. Outstanding! Drink 2013+. VM 89+ (4/2008): Saturated dark red with ruby highlights. Black fruit aromas show an almost liqueur-like ripeness. Deep flavors of dark berries and violet, given excellent cut by firm acidity. A serious, youthfully tight wine with a solid tannic spine. I'd give this a good eight years in the cellar. As good a vintage for this cuvee as I can recall. |

BH 90 (4/2013): A pretty and well-layered nose of deeply pitched red currant, plum and warm earth scents serves as a graceful introduction to the intense, detailed and mouth coating flavors that possess a firm but not hard tannic spine before terminating in a dusty, persistent and mineral-inflected finish. I very much like the sense of poise as well as the perfectly ripe phenolics and overall this is a seriously good villages expressly built to age. Drink 2018+. Outstanding! |

VM 89-91 (1/2016): (these vines are now 53 years old): Healthy bright red. Very ripe red fruit aromas are complemented by smoky minerality.
