WA 93 (12/2012): A firm core of tannins provides the underlying structure for the 2010 Merlot. This juicy, dark, yet wonderfully sophisticated and polished wine impresses for its balance and overall sense of harmony. The 2010 is impossibly young now, and it needs time, but is hugely promising. Layers of fruit flow effortlessly to the long, voluptuous finish. The blend is 89% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025. VM 92 (11/2013): The 2010 Merlot is rich, round and seductive for the year. Dark red berries, flowers, sweet spices and menthol all flesh out in a seductive, expressive wine loaded with class. Mocha, licorice and dark raspberries all flesh out on the inviting, textured finish. There is a lot to like in this generous, expressive Merlot. The 2010 is mostly estate Merlot, with 9% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Petit Verdot. Antonio Galloni. |

WA 93 (6/2011): More primary and backward, the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon needs 4-6 more years of cellaring, but is capable of lasting three decades or more. Composed of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and a dollop of Malbec, it exhibits a dense, thick, black/purple color as well as emerging aromas of cedar, black currants, ink, graphite, charcoal and forest floor. This full-bodied, packed and stacked Cabernet offers a sexy, open-knit opulence on the attack followed by noticeable tannins. However, the latter component is clearly balanced by the wine’s stunning concentration, texture and overall depth. As stated above, forget this beauty for another 4-6 years and drink it over the following 25-30+. VM 93 (6/2004): (a blend of 80% cabernet sauvignon, 14% merlot, 3% cabernet franc, 2% petit verdot and 1% malbec) Full ruby. Roasted currant, black cherry and bitter chocolate on the slightly medicinal nose. Penetrating fruit flavors of roasted plum and currant, complicated by notes of leather and bitter chocolate. Comes across as a bit more vibrant than the merlot despite possessing an even high pH. Then finishes firm and bright, with major tannins and late notes of currant, leather, mocha and tobacco. WS 92 (9/2004): A big, rich, yet elegantly styled wine that manages to serve up lots of complex flavors without being ponderous. The core currant, vanilla, blackberry, cedar and coffee grounds provide plenty of complex flavors and it finishes with a long, persistent aftertaste. Ample tannins for medium-term cellaring. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Drink now through 2013. 2,814 cases made. |

WA 95 (6/2015): As for the 2005 Proprietary Red, it is a blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% each Petit Verdot and Malbec. While this might not be the blockbuster one would expect, there is Outstanding depth, purity and overall texture and ripeness. Again, terrific acidity gives the wine vigor and precision, despite a lofty 15.2% alcohol. The wine is fresh and pure, with black raspberry and blackcurrant fruit, some white floral notes, and the telltale forest floor. This is a wine to drink over the next 10-15+ years. Pahlmeyer’s wines age well, as I am still working off the 1995 and 1996 Proprietary Reds, which remain in great shape. VM 94 (6/2008): 84% cabernet sauvignon with 10% merlot, 4% cab franc and 1% each petit verdot and malbec) Good saturated red-ruby. Pungent aromas of cassis and violet, with a whiff of smoked meat. Densely packed, layered and thick; a step up in depth from the merlot. This boasts a chocolatey richness to its sweet dark fruit flavors. Finishes supple, lush, broad and long, with substantial sweet tannins and a lingering note of chocolate. WS 94 (10/2008): Ripe, rich and complex, with layers of black cherry, wild berry, currant and cherry kirsch flavors that are bold, rich and persistent, ending with a long, intense yet elegant aftertaste. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Drink now through 2015. 6,245 cases made. |

WA 96 (12/2008): There are 7,000 cases of the prodigious 2006 Proprietary Red Wine (a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec). Most of the fruit comes from the Stagecoach Vineyard and the Waters Ranch. Sweet, smoky, meaty aromas interwoven with melted asphalt, camphor, blackberry, cassis, and charcoal scents emerge from the complex aromatics. In the mouth, the wine is full-bodied, displaying sweet tannin, a concentrated mouthfeel, and a long, heady finish with substantial fruit, glycerin, and extract. It should drink beautifully for 20+ years. VM 93 (6/2009): Good medium ruby. Musky aromas of black raspberry, mocha and smoke. Ripe, lush, seamless and deep; broad for the vintage, with plenty of mid-palate stuffing to support its tannins. This, too, is still youthfully unevolved and will need longer to express its inherent sweetness. Like the 2006 merlot, this merited a score at the high end of my original projected range. |

VM 91 (5/2020): Deep medium ruby to the rim. Musky nose melds currant, plum, tobacco leaf, milk chocolate and licorice. Fat, plush and sweet on entry, then quite full and ripe in the middle palate, with savory redcurrant, plum, spice, tobacco and mocha flavors dominating. Conveys a high-pH texture and a whiff of beefsteak tomato leavened by an herbal element. A bit unrefined, this is a plush, large-scaled 2010. Finishes with nicely buffered tannins and very good length--ready to go now! This may lose its spring if you wait too long. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 95 (11/2013): A beguiling, layered wine, the 2011 Proprietary Red impresses for its nuance, vibrancy and delineation. Grilled herbs, graphite, smoke, new leather and incense meld together in a vibrant wine endowed with gorgeous depth and intensity. The tannins are just a bit firm, hardly a surprise for a wine made from mountain fruit and the year, but the 2011 stands out for its impeccable balance and pure class. The 2011 is Cabernet Sauvignon, mostly from Stagecoach, with drops of Malbec and Petit Verdot. Antonio Galloni. WA 90 (10/2013): The dense ruby/purple-colored 2011 Proprietary Red is, as usual, a blend of five grapes, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. It exhibits Pahlmeyer’s tell-tale suppleness as well as a sexy, upfront display of ripe fruit, flowers, black currants, cherries and a hint of espresso. It is not the biggest or richest blend made, but it is well put together with no hint of herbaceousness. Enjoy it over the next 10-12 years. |

WA 94 (10/2014): The 2012 Proprietary Red Blend (79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 4% Malbec and 1% Petit Verdot) is fabulous with complex notes of plum, blackcurrants, blueberries, raspberries, licorice and very subtle background oak followed by a full-bodied, opulently textured wine. This has voluptuous texture, tremendous opulence and is a sexy beast. Perfect purity also highlights this marvelous wine that can be drunk now or cellared for 15 more years. |

VM 92 (10/2015): Pahlmeyer's 2014 Proprietary Red is once again terrific. Vibrant and nuanced in the glass, the 2014 comes across as a more friendly and accessible version of the 2013, all of which means it should drink well with minimal cellaring. Inky blue and blackish fruit, licorice, French oak and menthol add shades of nuance. This is a surprisingly delicate wine within the Pahlmeyer range. Touches of Merlot and Petit Verdot round out the blend. Antonio Galloni. |

JD 97+ (5/2022): The 2018 Red Blend Proprietary Red could easily be mistaken for a great vintage from Château Latour, at least aromatically. Blackcurrants, scorched earth, lead pencil shavings, and a gorgeous sense of minerality all develop in the glass, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a deep, concentrated mouthfeel, building tannins (and plenty of them), and a great finish. This brilliant, world-class Cabernet is going to benefit from 4-5 years or more of bottle age and have 30+ years of longevity. The blend is 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, and 1% Cabernet Franc, all brought up in 95% new French oak. 2,668 cases. |

WA 95 (5/2022): Mainly off the estate vineyard and mainly Cabernet Sauvignon (77%), Pahlmeyer's 2019 Proprietary Red spent 18 months in almost all new French oak. Gentle herbal notes accent cherry and cassis on the nose of this full-bodied wine, which manages to be rich and velvety without ever being heavy. Waves of ripe fruit, cedary oak and savory loam linger on the long, elegant finish. This should drink well for up to two decades. |

WA 94 (5/2022): Almost entirely Old Wente clone (or, more properly, selection), Pahlmeyer's 2020 Chardonnay continues to be among Napa's most noteworthy efforts with the variety. All barrel fermented in all new oak from François Frères, there are overtones of smoke, mocha and popcorn, notes of honey and toast but also a deep core of pear and melon notes. Full-bodied and generous on the palate, it's also long and citrusy, with classy notes of pencil shavings on the lingering finish. JD 93+ (2/2023): This estate makes a terrific white, and their 2020 Chardonnay reveals a medium gold hue to go with beautiful aromatics of ripe peach and stone fruits, white chocolate, spice, and a touch of minerality. Medium to full-bodied and concentrated, with outstanding balance, it needs air to show at its best and I suspect will benefit from 6-12 months of bottle age. It should keep through 2027. |

WA 95 (5/2023): The price has almost quintupled since the 1991 played an instrumental role in the film "Disclosure" (1994; Michael Douglas, Demi Moore), but Pahlmeyer's 2021 Chardonnay remains a stunningly seductive wine. All barrel fermented and matured 11 months in 91% new French oak—mostly François Frères—bottled unfixed and unfiltered, it boasts an intoxicating perfume of gently toasted brioche, roasted cashews and hazelnuts, grilled pear and pineapple. In the mouth, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and dense, yet silky and fine, with a lingering, elegant finish. Fruit sources include the Pahlmeyer Estate Vineyard but also Stagecoach, Antica, Hudson and Hyde. |
