WA 98+ (12/2011): As I reported last year, the black/purple-tinged 2009 Cote Rotie La Landonne is an extraordinary effort. Made in a more open-knit, exuberant, flamboyant style, it possesses many of the same characteristics as the 2010, but with silkier tannins and lots of glycerin, smoked meat, violet, black currant, licorice, pepper and charcuterie characteristics. With super intensity, a full-bodied mouthfeel, lower acidity than the 2010 and sweeter tannin, it should drink well for 30+ years. JLL ****[*] (6/2011): Full, dark red; the nose is persistent - shows smoky bacon, notions of rugged outcrops, pebbly heat - there is a southern tone to this, the heat of the south, with a mineral breeze to clarify it. Thorough, consistent palate which leads on mineral-flecked black fruit, is intricate, has smoky, rubbed stones in its mix. There is a touch of sucrosity from its lees raising for now, a temporary stage. It is less open than the Maugiron 2009 now. A gradual improver and developer over time. From mid-2013 or 2014. VM 94 (4/2012): Opaque purple. An explosive, heady bouquet evokes red and dark berry preserves, incense, Asian spices and potpourri; you could scent a room with this stuff. Palate-staining raspberry and blueberry flavors are lifted by zesty mineral and spice notes and show Outstanding vivacity and focus. Pure, energetic and sweet on the finish, which refuses to let up. Grange told me that the reason Delas doesn't make this wine every year--as in 2008, for example--"is because we want it to be a truly great expression of Cote-Rotie or not to exist at all. If it isn't superb, it doesn't get bottled, period." |

WA 95 (12/2014): Showing even better from bottle than barrel, the 2012 Côte Rôtie La Landonne is a fabulous effort that oozes notions of cassis, black raspberry, violet, incense and spice-box. Medium to full-bodied, with a gorgeous mid-palate and building, fine tannin, enjoy this ripe, layered, textured beauty over the coming 10-15 years. Made from 100% Syrah aged in new barrels, it’s gorgeous. VM 92-94 (3/2014): Vivid purple. A hugely perfumed bouquet evokes smoky blackberry, blueberry, potpourri and cola. Seamless and sweet, offering energetic dark berry and licorice flavors and an exotic floral pastille quality. Gains richness with air and finishes very long, with lingering sweetness, floral character and smooth tannins. Powerful but balanced and lively, even elegant. JLL ***[*] (11/2013): (From cask). Quite a bright dark red. The nose is an elegant affair, all together - it mixes mineral, light violet, has an understated sweetness that appeals, tar and treacle from its oak raising. The palate is suggestive, charming: it is all very pliant, supple, provides a soft coating of cassis and black cherry. The tannins are mild, have a light grain element - dark, grainy smudges. The length is fair. It needs 30 months to bring together its parts, but longer to gain weight and depth. A polished wine that skims a little. From 2016. |

WS 97 (7/2008): Supertaut now, but loaded with racy black currant, fig and suave mocha notes, all pushed by racy tannins. This offers loads of briary grip, but it's sweet and ripe, with a minerality that blazes through on the finish. Should cruise in the cellar. Best from 2010 through 2030. 375 cases made. WA 96 (2/2008): Black/purple to the rim, the sensational 2005 Hermitage Les Bessards possesses a classic bouquet of graphite, licorice, creme de cassis, and a touch of background oak. Massive, even monstrous in the mouth with enormous extract, this is a 50-60 year wine. It is full-bodied, high in tannin, and should not be touched for another decade. It will keep through 2050+. JLL ***** (1/2008): Dark, sustained black plum robe with a full black at its centre - is matt in complexion. This has a big bouquet - it is very wide and filled, occupies the glass; there is the clarity of the granite present, a definite mineral with an underlay of compact black fruit, charcoal, cocoa and chocolate noir. On the palate, it is a big striding wine - the black fruit and the intrinsically rich matter are in thrall to the marked new oak. Is just edging out of the starting gate, if that yet. There is a real firm frame around its deep set heart. This is not a wine that offers negotiation - it asserts a point of view. Will be more diplomatic from 2014. A big scale wine - is it Grand Vin? Probably - it will be interesting to review this from 2010. Some little bird in my mind says a little L`Hermite or a tad of Meal might have completed this granite-only wine in this particular vintage, but it has gained in weight since last tasted, and can organize itself. Is 5.5 stars really just now. See you in heaven. VM 93+ (2/2008): Opaque ruby. Fresh cherry and boysenberry on the nose, with seductive floral and mineral qualities adding complexity. Becomes more pungent with air, picking up tobacco, spicecake and dried violet scents. Juicy dark fruit flavors spread across the palate, ending with good mineral snap. This is very intriguing, as well as quite young. |

| WA 97 (3/2017): One of the wines of the vintage is unquestionably the 2006 Hermitage les Bessards, which comes from one of the greatest terroirs for Syrah in the world. Still youthful and vibrant, with those classic graphite and crushed rock characteristics that define this cuvee, as well as loads of black fruits, toasted spice and dried flowers, this beauty is full-bodied, uber-concentrated and gorgeously pure. It’s still 4-5 years away from full maturity, and is going to keep for 2-3 decades. |

WA 100 (9/2015): Every bit as profound as the 2010, yet in a more voluptuous, lower acid, hedonistic style, the inky colored 2009 Hermitage les Bessards (aged all in new French oak) offers incredible intensity and depth in its black raspberry, toasted bread, graphite and spice-like aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, massively endowed and with a wealth of raw material, it has high, yet sweet tannin and a finish that just won't quit. Give it 4-5 years and drink it over the following 3-4 decades. Unfortunately, this is made in tiny quantities, but count yourself lucky if you were able to grab a few bottles of either the '09 or '10. JLL ***** (6/2011): Dark, black-tinted robe. Drifting black berry fruit air, licorice and implied herbs, graphite. Smoke-oak, tar infused in rich black fruit on palate, has a chugging density. A shade one-dimensional, needs time to open, but above all vary, step up a gear and break out. Decant this. The aftertaste is rich – there is variety at that stage in the form of plum, sweet herbs, laurel. 14°. I find it more southern and fleshy than the grippy Bessards straight off the granite that is usual. “Of our big four wines, it most suffered from its bottling two weeks ago. From cask it was much more complex,” Jacques Grange. 10,125 bottles this year - abundant crop. WS 95 (6/2012): Dense and chewy, with lots of espresso, loam and roasted apple wood notes that have yet to meld fully, backed by ganache, plum sauce and steeped blackberry notes. There's lots of grip on the finish, with violet and anise notes deeply buried. On the dark side of the spectrum for sure, but with superior range nonetheless. Best from 2016 through 2030. 60 cases imported. VM 94 (3/2012): Opaque purple. Heady scents of mineral-accented dark berries, cherry-vanilla, licorice and incense, along with a smoky topnote. Lush and creamy in texture, with incisive, palate-staining blackberry, blueberry and licorice pastille flavors. Silky tannins build on the finish, which leaves behind notes of blue fruit compote, vanilla and exotic spices. This wine is almost shockingly approachable now but is built for the long haul. Josh Raynolds. |

WA 100 (12/2012): The uber-impressive 2010 Hermitage Les Bessards ranks alongside the perfect 2009. The strikingly intense powdered stone/granite minerality is apparent in this wine of great intensity, prodigious, almost skyscraper-like texture, massive body and high tannins. It is only for true connoisseurs who have a cold cellar as well as the patience to wait a minimum of a decade for it to round into drinking form. Filled with potential, it is one of the single greatest Hermitages I have ever tasted. There is no hint of its 100% new oak aging! JLL ****** (11/2012): Dark rumble of red in a dark-tinted robe. The nose is centred around a copious, but well manageable beef stock aroma, shows pepper, Bovril stock, fluid liqueur black fruit, suggests many layers before you reach its heart. Has gras in abundance, offers raspberry, black cherry, oak in the second rank. The palate spreads its gras richness with precise reach; it is all wrapped together, is well-balanced. It has a shade more coating then the regular Domaine des Tourettes 2010. This is Limousine Service Hermitage steered by a chauffeur with a tang in his accent and his hat at a tilt. Grainy tannins and oily berry combine at the end. It is mighty on its freshness and poise. This is an intellectual vintage - not an open book. “It is so pure and refined, so dense and tightly packed - will people understand this?", Claire Darnaud, winemaker. WS 96 (11/2013): Dark and inviting, with lots of braised plum, fig paste, warm black currant confiture, freshly brewed espresso and baker's chocolate notes wound together and held in check for now by hefty grip. An echo of iron on the finish keeps this grounded. Should unwind slowly, maintaining a serious bass line. Best from 2015 through 2030. 150 cases imported. VM 95 (4/2013): Bright purple. Black and blue fruits, incense and candied violet on the heady, intensely perfumed nose. Sappy, penetrating and pure, its deep black raspberry and blueberry flavors lifted by juicy acidity. Stains the palate and shows uncanny precision for its power. Closes sweet and very long, with youthful tannins and resonating spice and floral pastille notes. |

JD 100 (1/2018): The top cuvée from Delas is the 2015 Hermitage Les Bessards, and it's always 100% Syrah from the steep, broken granite soils of the Bessards lieu-dit. Aged 18 months in 30% new barrels, its purple/plum color is followed by a huge nose of blackcurrants, graphite, toasted spice, crushed rocks and saddle leather. Powerful, massively concentrated, and tannic, it has a broad, expansive, heavenly texture, a thick mid-palate (you could almost use a fork for this beauty), and a great finish. Despite the richness level, it stays balanced and graceful on the palate, and is never over the top or heavy. It's a perfect Hermitage that will start to shine with 4-5 years of bottle age and keep for three decades or more. Bravo! WA 99+ (12/2017): With approximately 500 cases produced, the 2015 Hermitage les Bessards is probably among the most available of the vintage's top wines. Jump on it if your means allow, as I suspect this wine will be a candidate for perfection once it sheds some tannin. It's perfumed on the nose, concentrated on the palate and amazingly long yet also elegant from start to finish. And amid the power, oak and massive cassis and blackberry fruit, it also manages to include hints of crushed stone evocative of its granitic terroir. It's breathtaking stuff, virtually guaranteed to bring a smile to any wine lover's face. VM 96 (4/2018): Inky ruby. A highly aromatic bouquet evokes candied black and blue fruits, along with complicating suggestions of smoky minerals, candied flowers, olive and vanilla. Deep, chewy and expansive in the mouth, offering impressively concentrated dark berry liqueur, fruitcake and salty olive flavors that are complicated by a hint of smoky minerality and a building floral pastille note. Distinctly rich and powerful but surprisingly graceful as well, showing noteworthy clarity and mineral-driven thrust on the strikingly long finish. Josh Raynolds. |

WA 98 (5/2021): Boasting classic Les Bessards notes of sun-warmed cassis and crushed stone, the 2018 Hermitage Les Bessards has turned out to be a magnificent wine—a close rival to the potentially perfect 2015. Full-bodied and velvety, concentrated and tannic, overflowing with notes of grilled plums, grilled meat and black olives, it's all topped off by a forever finish that remains fresh and cleansing, courtesy of lingering salted-licorice flavors and the texture of finely ground stone dust. Try a bottle after 2025, if you can wait that long. JD 97 (11/2020): A stunning Hermitage in every sense, the 2018 Hermitage Les Bessards comes from the steep, broken granite soils of the Les Bessards lieu-dit on Hermitage Hill. Revealing a deep purple/violet color, it has a gorgeous nose of crème de cassis, scorched earth, violets, pepper, and a liquid rock-like minerality. It’s full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, with background oak, flawless balance, ripe yet present tannins, and a great, great finish. It's not a massive Hermitage (especially by this cuvée’s standards in the past) yet has gorgeous purity of fruit and an incredible sense of class. Give bottles 4-5 years (it offers pleasure even today) and it should keep for 30+ years or more. VM 96 (12/2022): Glass-staining ruby. Hugely perfumed, mineral-accented black and blue fruit preserves, floral oil, olive paste, pipe tobacco and exotic spice aromas show superb clarity and pick up a hint of smokiness with air. Juicy and expansive on the palate, offering alluringly sweet kirsch, cassis, fruitcake and cola flavors that deepen slowly through the back half. Shows fine delineation and vibrant, mineral lift on an impressively long, chewy and floral-accented finish that's framed by steadily building tannins. Josh Raynolds. |

JD 99 (8/2022): My favorite release from this estate is consistently their Les Bessards Hermitage, and their 2019 is no exception. Coming from the western part and pure broken granite soils on the west side of this magical hill, it sports a dense purple hue to go with a brilliant perfume of cassis, graphite, scorched earth, burning embers, spring flowers, and peppery herbs. Incredibly complex, layered, and nuanced, with classic Hermitage characteristics, it still stays firmly planted in the ripe, sunny, sexy vintage. Full-bodied, concentrated, and structured on the palate, it has a wealth of tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. This is pure Hermitage magic that needs to be forgotten for 4-5 years and will evolve for 20-30 years in cold cellars. Hats off to the team at Delas for another incredible wine. VM 97 (12/2022): Opaque ruby-red. A highly perfumed and expansive bouquet evokes dark berry and cherry preserves, Indian spices, olive and incense; a smoky mineral nuance emerges as the wine opens up. Fleshy and broad on the palate but surprisingly energetic as well, offering intense, mineral-driven black raspberry, boysenberry, kirsch, allspice and licorice flavors, with a suave touch of candied flowers. Finishes chewy, vibrant and impressively long, with resonating florality and youthfully firm tannins that don't detract from the wine's intense fruit. (Drink between 2029-2039) Josh Raynolds. |
