VM 93 (12/2022): Deep violet. Pungent, smoke-tinged blue fruit, floral, game and mineral aromas pick up a spicy nuance as the wine opens up. Appealingly sweet, smoke- and cracked pepper-accented cherry liqueur, blueberry, smoky bacon and violet pastille flavors show very good depth and surprising energy. The spicy note carries through a long, gently tannic finish that leaves a juicy, blue fruit note behind. (Drink between 2025-2035). Josh Raynolds.
JD 93 (2/2022): Leading off the bottled reds, the 2019 Côte Rôtie Amethyste would be a great introduction for readers trying to understand the style of this estate. A perfumed, gamey, sun-kissed nose of blue fruits, black peppery and candied violets give way to a medium to full-bodied, ripe, textured, and (by this estate’s standards) downright charming Côte Rôtie that already offers pleasure. It will keep for 10-15 years. (Drink between 2022-2037). |

| VM 94 (2/2015): Dark purple. A heady, exotically perfumed bouquet evokes black and blue fruit liqueur, incense, smoked meat and floral pastille, with a minerally nuance lending vivacity. Broad and sappy on the palate, offering intense boysenberry and cherry compote flavors and a wild twist of passion fruit. Densely packed yet lively, finishing with outstanding power and persistence. Even tannins come in late and fold smoothly into the wine's intesne fruit. (Drink between 2018-2035). |

| VM 96 (12/2022): Inky violet color. Displays intensely perfumed, mineral-driven dark berry preserve, incense, exotic spice and pipe tobacco scents that show fine detail and a hint of smokiness. Stains the palate with alluringly sweet kirsch, blackberry and cassis flavors that are complemented by suggestions of olive paste, candied violet and cracked pepper. The spicy nuance comes back strong on the penetrating finish, which is framed by powerful, steadily building tannins. Be patient with this one. Josh Raynolds. |

JD 93 (3/2024): Coming all from the mica-schists of the Chavaroche lieu-dit and not destemmed, the 2021 Côte Rôtie La Chavaroche (Peroline in Europe) spent two years in 20% new demi-muids. This gorgeous wine is a clear success, offering complex black raspberry, iron, bacon fat, violets, and lavender-like aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied, concentrated, layered, and elegant, it’s an incredibly classy Côte Rôtie.
VM 92 (1/2025): Taut and peppery, the 2021 Côte-Rôtie La Chavaroche / La Péroline shows well. Stemminess, graphite, rose petal and a zesty slice of grapefruit add more complexity in the glass. Built around ripe and firm tannins, the medium-bodied 2021 dances on the palate with lifting freshness and ample delicacy. There’s a lovely cool vintage austerity going on here. | VM 93-95 (6/2018): Opaque purple. Aromas of fresh dark berries, cherry pit, licorice, cola and cracked pepper, and a hint of gaminess in the background. Juicy and expansive on the palate, offering bitter cherry, cassis and spicecake flavors that tighten up and become spicier with aeration. Turns sweeter on the strikingly long finish, which features dusty, mounting tannins and resonating floral and smoky mineral notes. Josh Raynolds. |

| VM 95 (12/2022): Opaque ruby. Mineral- and spice-tinged aromas of ripe cherry, dark berries, smoked meat and candied violet show impressive clarity and spicy lift. Chewy and energetic on the palate, offering juicy blackberry, cherry-cola, olive paste and spicecake flavors that deepen steadily through the back half. Becomes sweeter on the impressively long finish, which features well-integrated tannins and reverberating mineral and exotic spice notes. "Journaries" is the name of this bottling in the U.S., but for the rest of the world, it is called "Maestria". Most of the fruit here comes from La Landonne. Josh Raynolds. |

JD 92 (3/2024): The 2021 Côte Rôtie Les Journaries (Maestria in Europe) comes from La Landonne, Côte Rozier, and Côte Blonde and was partially destemmed and brought up in 20% demi-muids. It brings more iron and black pepper, with a core of bright plum and black cherry fruits, medium body, ripe tannins, and nicely integrated acidity. It's not massively concentrated, but I love its overall balance, and it has a good sense of freshness and outstanding length.
VM 83 (1/2025): The 2021 Côte-Rôtie Les Journaries / Maestria is a little too rustic for my taste. Barnyard elements and leather are front and center, accompanied by black plum and a touch of cedar. Balanced by fresh acidity, the moderately concentrated 2021 is built around astringent tannins, taking away the elegance. (Drink between 2025-2028). Nicolas Greinacher. |
