WA 92 (11/2016): Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru was showing some rather conspicuous new oak on the nose, though there is sufficient fruit underneath to soak that up. It just needs to develop more presence. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, fine tannin, a pinch of black pepper on the tip of the tongue with good heft behind it. What it lacks is killer precision on the finish, all the same, I admire the boldness of this Bonnes-Mares and that is often what I seek from this vineyard. Tasted September 2016. VM 94 (3/2016): Moderately saturated medium red. Highly nuanced scents of red cherry, raspberry, flowers and underbrush. At once silky and penetrating, showing a positive medicinal aspect to its flavors of red berries, flowers and spicy herbs. Very shapely wine with a rising finish featuring suave tannins and noteworthy finesse. A superb showing; this strikes me as more refined than the larger-scaled 2014. Stephen Tanzer. BH 94 (1/2016): An all but invisible veneer of wood integrates seamlessly with the intensely earthy and wonderfully complex dark berry fruit aromas that display top notes of spice and dried flowers along with a hint of herbal tea. As one might reasonably expect there is excellent power, volume and muscle to the attractive mineral-driven broad-shouldered flavors that possess a notably different texture compared to the Clos de Bèze on the hugely long finish. Unlike the Clos de Bèze however this beauty will probably be approachable after only 7 to 8 years of cellaring. |

VM 93+ (3/2012): Medium red, a bit lighter than the Clos Saint-Jacques. Captivating raspberry, spice and wild herb aromas are accented by blood orange and an exotic whiff of white fruits. Wonderfully bright and intense for 2009, showing an almost saline impression of extract to the bitter cherry and mineral flavors. Much more imploded than it was from barrel, this very long, strongly mineral but slightly disjointed grand cru calls for eight to ten years of cellaring. Stephen Tanzer. |

WA 94 (10/2018): Bruno Clair's 2015 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru was showing very well, wafting from the glass with a classy bouquet of ripe cherries and dried flowers, complemented by sapid, savory nuances of soy and smoked duck. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, supple and satiny, with a deceptively open-knit, succulent profile that I suspect is more a function of the wine's structural finesse than it is any lack of seriousness. This is an elegant, classically balanced Clos de Bèze that may well prove to be a sleeper of the vintage. VM 94 (11/2018): The 2015 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has an initially slightly disjointed bouquet that comes together nicely with aeration. I like the purity here, and the oak is beautifully integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin, judicious acidity and wonderful precision as it crescendoes in a detailed finish. Yes, there is a veneer of new oak to be absorbed, but there is enormous potential. Long-term and quite regal. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. Neal Martin. BH 96 (1/2018): This too is cool, elegant, spicy and even more complex with its range of airy red berries, underbrush, earth, sandalwood and anise nuances. There is excellent richness, power and mid-palate density to the big-bodied but not massive flavors that exhibit a subtle minerality on the mouth coating and hugely long finish. This is certainly an imposing wine yet the mouthfeel is one of class and grace and interestingly for such a young Bèze, there is virtually no austerity. Wow. |

WA 93-95 (1/2023): The 2021 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is also a notable success, wafting from the glass with aromas of rich smoky berries, cherries and forest floor, followed by a full-bodied, ample and layered palate that's textural and multidimensional, combining the typical mid-palate volume of this site with the charm and delicacy of the vintage to compelling effect. BH 93-96 (1/2023): A pungent nose of firm reduction and relatively prominent wood precedes simply gorgeously textured big-bodied and powerful flavors that are blessed with an abundance of sappy dry extract that coats the palate as well as the very firm tannins that shape the hugely long, balanced and youthfully austere finale. This is superb with class and an innate poise. (Drink starting 2036) VM 94-96 (1/2023): The 2021 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru, which contains 40%-50% whole bunches, has great clarity with brambly red fruit, briary, crushed rocks and sea spray. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, focused though it needs the second winter to bid everything together and fine-tune those tannins. Nice build in the mouth and insistent grip. I like the cut of its jib. Neal Martin. |

VM 92 (12/2023): The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru has a lot of reduction on the nose, and the wood is far less integrated than the others in the flight. It certainly doesn't hold a torch to Rousseau's Cazetiers. The palate is medium-bodied, with a firm structure, good backbone and commendable sapidity. It is a bit backward and doesn't have the complexity of its peers toward the finish. Again, there is a touch of reduction. It may well find its groove with continued aeration, but I will be prudent with my score for now. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting. Neal Martin. |
