WA 92-94+ (6/2020): In 2012, Hong Kong-based Peter Kwok purchased this vineyard located in Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes. The average age of vines is 30 years old. The wine is aging in 40% new oak barrels, 40% one-year-old barrels and 20% two-year-old barrels. The blend is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, with fruit from the Cassevert lieu-dit, and the wine has 14.3% alcohol at a pH of 3.6. Deep purple-black in color, the 2019 Tour Saint-Christophe leaps from the glass with gregarious notes of fresh red and black cherries, mulberries and wild blueberries plus suggestions of eucalyptus, chocolate pie, cinnamon stick and clove oil with a waft of cedar chest. The full-bodied palate has seriously impressive freshness, featuring a firm, finely grained frame and loads of energetic black fruit layers, finishing long and spicy.
VM 94-96 (6/2020): The 2019 Tour Saint Christophe was picked from 27 September until 15 October at 37hl/ha. Matured in 40% new oak, this has an incredibly concentrated bouquet that needs to shrug off a little reduction when I taste it. Layers of blackberry and blueberry, wilted violets and orange rind burst from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with juicy ripe grippy tannins that frame the layers of dense black fruit tinged with allspice and graphite. It is a Saint-emilion clearly built for the long-term, powerful and uncompromising, perhaps one that will be in need of cellaring for several years before it becomes approachable. Neal Martin.
JD 95-97 (6/2020): From an estate that continues to fire on all cylinders, the 2019 Château Tour Saint Christophe reveals a saturated purple color to go with a pretty, floral bouquet of black raspberries, mulberries, violets, graphite, and crushed stone. Fabulously balanced, medium to full-bodied, with good acidity as well as sweet tannins, it's a finesse oriented, elegant version of this cuvee that does everything right. This estate has backed off the power and ripeness over the past few vintages, and the wine is more elegant, balanced, and seamless. It's a better wine today.
JS 96-97 (6/2020): This is tight with finesse and focus. Minerally and salty with an ultra-fine palate and polished tannins. It goes on and on and on. Strength and finesse at the same time. 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc. |

JD 96 (3/2023): The 2020 Château Tour Saint Christophe showed spectacularly well, and based off past vintages, this shouldn't surprise anyone. Based on 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc raised in 40% new barrels (the balance is in second- and third-fill oak), it offers a full-bodied, incredibly pure, balanced style revealing subtle oak, terrific darker, almost blue fruits, lots of chocolate, leafy herb and mineral nuances, and gorgeous tannins. It's worth pointing out that this will be the last vintage made by the talented Jérôme Aguirre. This terrific Saint-Emilion will evolve for two decades. (Drink between 2024-2044).
VM 94 (11/2024): The 2020 Tour Saint Christophe has a more classically styled, well-defined bouquet, perhaps with Cabernet Franc imparting attractive bell pepper and meaty notes. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. It's fleshy, velvety and cohesive, with a persistent finish that lingers in the mouth. Excellent. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. WA 91-93 (5/2023): Exhibiting notions of dark berries, blackberries and licorice, the 2022 Tour Saint Christophe is medium to full-bodied and has an enveloping texture with a fleshy core of fruit and powdery tannins leading to a long, rather concentrated finish. This blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc from vines planted on clay-limestone soil is a real success.
VM 92-94 (5/2023): The 2022 Tour Saint Christophe comes across as quite laid back in this vintage. Beams of saline energy run through a core of dark-toned fruit, with spice, leather and licorice hints that add complexity throughout. The 2022 is very good, but not as exuberant as it has been in some years. Tasted three times. Antonio Galloni.
JD 94-96 (5/2023): Another great wine from this château, the 2022 Château Tour Saint Christophe checks in as 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc brought up in 25% new French oak. It has a great nose of red plums, cassis, chalky minerality, and spice, and this full-bodied Saint-Emilion is impeccably balanced, with a pure, graceful mouthfeel, fine tannins, and outstanding length. The purity of fruit here is truly terrific.
JA 93 (5/2023): Inky damson, beautiful texture and glass staining colour. Smoky reduction on the nose (they do a late malolactic because it begins naturally, so this is not unusual). It clears to reveal intense dark berry fruit, oyster-shell salinity, has tension, depth and character, a little tight at this point, but this is going to age extremely well. 39hl/h , first vintage Grand Cru Classé on the labe, 25% new oak. Emmanuelle Fulchi d'Aligny techincal director, moving over from Château Angélus, and this is the first full vintage under her direction (just did the blend of 2021). |
