| VM 94 (6/2012): Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard Napa Valley) Inky purple. Complex, heady bouquet evokes red and dark berry preserves, incense and dried flowers, with star anise and allspice overtones gaining strength with air. Juicy, palate-staining black raspberry and cassis flavors show excellent depth, with chewing tobacco and vanilla nuances contributing complexity. | VM 92 (10/2015): The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard has come together nicely over the last year. Dark red cherry, plum, mocha, licorice and sweet spices all meld together in a decidedly powerful, explosive Dr. Crane that shows the more virile side of this site. The 2013 is a solid effort, but between the vineyard and the winemaking, this Cabernet should really be at another level. Antonio Galloni. |

| VM 94 (6/2012): Inky purple. High-pitched aromas of red- and blackcurrant, Indian spices and potpourri, with hint of vanilla lending depth. Bright and focused on the palate, offering intense dark berry and bitter cherry flavors that expand and gain sweetness with air. WA 98+ (12/2009): From the amazing Beckstoffer To-Kalon Vineyard, Hobbs’ 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon is a slightly more opulent, broader, savory effort that comes close to the perfect 2002. The 2007 has more noticeable tannin than the 2002 did at the same stage as well as more obvious minerality, but notes of graphite, black currant liqueur, licorice, cedar, and spice box are found in this full-bodied, multidimensional, fabulously concentrated wine. It was aged in 100% new Taransaud French oak barrels. Give it 5-6 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following three decades.
VM 94 (6/2010): Opaque purple. Expansive, flamboyantly perfumed bouquet of black cherry, raspberry, cassis and whiffs of incense and licorice. Then sweet, creamy and suave on the palate, offering sappy dark berry preserve and floral flavors that are utterly seamless. Extremely long and gently tannic on the finish, leaving behind sweet berry and floral pastille notes. This wonderfully vibrant, deep, elegant wine will be even better with another five years or so of bottle age but I'd have no trouble knocking one off now, all by myself. |

| VM 95 (7/2019): Saturated red-ruby. Licorice, black cherry, red- and blackcurrant, sexy soil tones and violet on the nose; conveys a strong impression of site character. Densely packed, full and youthful, conveying strong inner-mouth lift but still a bit monolithic and in need of patience. The wine's inky dark fruit, spice and graphite flavors are firm but not at all hard or spiky. Made from vines picked on the late side, this big boy may not be as graceful as the 2010 but its firm tannic structure should ensure a long, slow evolution. And this classically dry Cabernet boasts excellent definition and inner-mouth tension. Give this wine some time in a decanter if you plan to open a bottle anytime soon. Stephen Tanzer. |
