WA 98 (4/2014): The 2004 Sloan’s spectacular inky/purple/garnet color is followed by notes of high quality espresso roast, chocolate, black currants, truffles and a striking minerality. Full-bodied and super-rich with that roasted character that one finds in Cote Rotie and some of the great Haut-Brions from Pessac-Leognan, this full-bodied, rich 2004 is a super-star of the vintage. Although the tannins are elevated, they are extremely sweet and well-integrated. This spectacular 2004 is performing even better now than it did following bottling. It is also one of the more developed and evolved vintages of Sloan, no doubt because that was the nature of the 2004 vintage. Drink it now and over the next two decades. VM 94+ (6/2007): Bright, saturated ruby. Knockout nose combines black raspberry, dark plum, black cherry, violet, minerals, spices, soy sauce and brown spices. Lush, broad and rich, with a superripe blackberry flavor that remains this side of jammy. Thanks to its finesse of texture and juiciness, this ultimately comes across as less sweet and more classic than the superb 2002. Finishes with wonderfully suave, broad, building tannins that coat the teeth. The wine's cabernet franc component contributes lift and spice on the aftertaste. This needs, and should reward, six to eight years of cellar time. |

WA 96+ (12/2008): The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon has an almost La Mission Haut-Brion-like, scorched earth nose intermixed with cassis, coffee, and subtle hints of chocolate and balsamic. The wine is rich, full-bodied, but with great elegance and palate presence, without being heavy. Every wine to date has displayed considerable tannin, but even more concentration and fruit, so it is not an issue of the wines drying out, but rather requiring some patience before the complexity, which is already showing promise, emerges and the wines soften. This is a brilliant 2005 that is certainly one of the top wines of the vintage but needs some time in the bottle. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2030+. VM 95 (6/2008): Good full medium ruby. Knockout nose combines superripe black raspberry, minerals, tobacco and brown spices. Then wonderfully sweet and lush in the mouth, with an almost liqueur-like ripeness to the flavors of cassis, tobacco, chocolate, coffee and loam. As dense and thick as this is, though, it's also quite suave and juicy. Finishes with palate-staining sweetness of fruit and Outstanding breadth. |
