WA 97 (12/2011): Even better is the 2009 Cornas Les Vieilles Fontaines. One of the most monumental Cornas wines I have ever tasted, it boasts a blacker color as well as sumptuous notes of melted asphalt, black truffles, smoked game, huge quantities of blackberry and cassis liqueur, and hints of lard, creosote and incense. This spectacular Cornas is super-tannic with low acidity, so give it 8-10 years of cellaring and drink it over the following three decades. It is a modern day legend from Cornas. JLL ****[*] (11/2010): Dark, flashy, modern robe. The nose is led by a damp aroma, and not the expected fruit surge of many 2009s; there is black fruit here with a smoky licorice siding. The palate is carefully pieced together, has a discreet fire in its belly that shows towards the finish as it gradually builds towards a glow. Has a reserved black fruit and licorice flavour. Its reserve is appealing - a wine with possibilities. The length is efficient, contains quiet tannic support. From 2013. VM 93+ (4/2012): Inky ruby. Aromas of black and blue fruit preserves and candied licorice, with strong vanilla and spicecake qualities that build with sir. Broad and sappy on entry, then firmer on the mid-palate, offering intense spiciness and an array of dark fruit flavors. The vanilla note comes back strong on the youthfully tannic finish, which lingers with excellent fruit-driven persistence. I'd give this deep, rich, very promising wine a few years to absorb its oak. |

WS 94 (2/2019): A bright, piercing style, with a beam of violet and iron racing forth, backed by bitter cherry and red currant coulis flavors. The finish is flecked with olive, chalk and savory details while staying very focused and pure. Best from 2021 through 2036. 1,175 cases made. JD 93 (12/2018): Leading off the Cornas releases, the 2016 Cornas Les Chailles is a wine that always delivers pleasure. It offers an exotic bouquet of violets, black and blue fruits, gamey meats, incense, and bouquet garni. It's medium to full-bodied, rich, beautifully textured, and layered, with the charm to drink today and the balance and class to keep for a decade or more. It's a rich, powerful Cornas from 2016. JS 93 (8/2018): Dark-chocolate and stony, graphite-like, flinty aromas and a wealth of black fruit, as well as a redder thread of plums. The palate is very suave, sturdy and balanced with rich, ripe tannins that grip the dark-stone finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink in 2020. JLL ****[*] (11/2017): Dark robe, black centre. An air of stewed plums mixes with oak vanilla on the nose, a second layer of black cherries, licorice hovering. There is slight reduction. The palate offers a generous roll of black fruits with smooth tannins that develop darkness as it finishes; it has good heart, and there is strength on the aftertaste. This shows the minerality of Cornas along its second half, a granite seam there which is authentic. The aftertaste is tinged with that rockiness. It’s a lovely, complete wine. From 2020. |

JLL ***** (11/2010): Dark, shiny robe; crunchy black fruit lies in a generally reticent bouquet; it has grilled, nutty asides, but is potentially wide and deep, full of scope. On the palate it is grounded, expansive, and breathes its potential and depth - there is plenty to develop and offer. The ripe tannins meld in well with the juice of the black fruit. Excellent outlook here, the wine is well-balanced, the fruit very good and persistent. From late 2013. WA 94+ (12/2011): Notes of spring flowers, pen ink, graphite, blackberries and cassis soar from the glass of the inky black-hued 2009 Cornas Vieilles Vignes. This magnificent wine offers thrilling levels of concentration, massive extract and an off-the-charts finish. A killer Cornas, it can be drunk between 2020-2035. VM 92 (4/2012): Opaque ruby. Mineral-accented aromas of black raspberry, cassis and violet, with a spicy topnote. Deeply concentrated but almost shockingly energetic, offering juicy dark berry and licorice flavors and an exotic hint of candied flowers. Fine-grained tannins add shape and grip the persistent, floral finish. Right now the fruit is to the fore but this is built to age. |

JLL ***** (11/2012): (casks) dark robe. Wide, sustained aroma of black fruits, with a deep grounding and leather notes. All set to perform. The fruit has dash, flair, rolls along with a salty tang, a drop or two of violets. It hits a tannic buffer quite suddenly, marked by oak and gritty grain. The palate is broad, weighted, dark and currently assertive. Very broad and good-bodied, complete Cornas that is running on a very good track. There is a zing of clarity on the aftertaste, too. 2027-29 WS 95 (8/2014): WA 95 (12/2013): Slightly richer and more full-bodied, the 2011 Cornas Vieilles Vignes is certainly a standout in the vintage. Offering a sweet bouquet of black raspberry, cassis, forest floor, cracked pepper and assorted background meatiness, it flows onto the palate with awesome purity of fruit, vibrant acidity and ultra-fine tannin that gives plenty of cut and length on the finish. Spending 20 months in roughly 15% new French oak, this classic Cornas should be given a handful of years in the cellar and it will have two decades or more of ultimate longevity. VM 93 (4/2014): (25% new oak): Opaque ruby. Dark berry and floral pastille aromas are complemented by hints of vanilla, cola and smoky Indian spices. Smooth, sweet and expansive on the palate, offering intense blueberry and cherry-cola flavors and a building note of smoked meat. The gently tannic finish shows impressive energy and length and a whiplash of juicy dark berries. |

WA 95 (12/2014): Similar in style, yet deeper and richer, the 2012 Cornas Les Vieilles Vignes comes from 8-9 different parcels and sees roughly 20 months in 15% new French oak barrels. It’s a blockbuster-styled Cornas that doesn’t pull any punches in its sexy, ripe and textured personality. Black raspberry, cassis, licorice, ground herbs and sweet oak all emerge from this polished 2012, and while it dishes out plenty of pleasure now due to its wealth of fruit, it will have 10-15 years of longevity. WS 94 (10/2014): Ripe, intense and very pure, offering a gorgeously sleek, polished beam of cassis, plum sauce and raspberry fruit, lined with mouthwatering iron, lavender and rosemary notes. The long finish has serious cut. Best from 2015 through 2030. 250 cases imported. VM 92-94 (4/2014): (made with 20% whole clusters): Opaque purple. Sexy, complex bouquet of fresh dark berries, incense, potpourri and star anise. Lively, sharply focused and pure, with sappy blackberry and bitter cherry flavors complicated by suave spicecake and floral pastille accents. Supple tannins come on late and add shape to the long, spicy, penetrating finish. |

JD 95 (12/2018): The 2016 Cornas Les Vieilles Vignes is similar in style to the Vieilles Fontaines, just slightly less concentrated. It comes from the Combe, Patou, La Côte, Les Mazards and Chaillot lieux-dits and is partially destemmed and brought up mostly in neutral barrels. Lifted notes of black and blue fruits, damp earth, spring flowers, and violets all emerge from this full-bodied, concentrated yet elegant red that stays balanced on the palate, with good acidity. It's another powerful, seriously endowed, pedal-to-the-metal Cornas that will have two decades of longevity. WS 95 (3/2019): This offers a mix of red and black cherry paste flavors, infused with a range of bay leaf, savory, tobacco, olive and chalk notes. Shows a grippy feel through the finish, with the chalky minerality driving through. Best from 2022 through 2038. 1,230 cases made. JS 94 (8/2018): Impressive depth and detail with swirling, fragrant complexity of ripe blackberries and plenty of dark minerals. The oak is dialed-up, but the old-vine fruit is up to it. Concentrated, dense tannins, long, dark-fruit flavors and a bright future. From organically grown grapes. Try in 2022. JLL **** (11/2017): Dark red robe, Black cherries and blackcurrants mingle on the nose, a second tier of raspberry with a touch of delicacy in it. The palate is a meaty affair, right away, has a muscular bearing, is a tight-knit child of the rocks. Its juice is fine, but also mineral all through, and is released grudgingly for now. It’s a true Cornas with the definition that a cool vintage brings, not swaddled in sunny rays throughout the season. There is a tangy, authentic finish marked by tight, rocky tannins. STGT in the glass here, for lovers of The Real Thing. From spring 2020. |

JD 98 (11/2020): While not submitted to my tasting (and it wasn't presented from barrel last year), it would be hard to imagine there won't be a Les Vieilles Fontaines cuvee. Don't miss a chance to buy a bottle if you find one. Moving to the 2018 Cornas Les Vieilles Vignes, this beauty is cut from the same cloth as the Les Chailles yet is deeper and richer, with another level of concentration. Black and blue fruits, ground pepper, violets, smoked game, and loads of spring flower notes define the bouquet, and it has a vibrant, almost old school vibe that carries plenty of power yet still stays light and elegant on the palate. This beautiful, singular wine is open and enjoyable today, yet I wouldn't be surprised to see it close down with a year or two of bottle age. It should see its 20th birthday in fine form. WA 95 (5/2021): The 2018 Cornas Vieilles Vignes blends fruit from some of the top lieux-dits of the appellation: Combe, Patou, La Côte, Les Mazards and Chaillot. Aged 20 months in approximately 15% new oak, it's a dark, inky-hued wine, but one that retains bright, fresh fruit notes of red raspberries and plums alongside hints of cedar and menthol. It's full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, with a firm, granitic structure and sense of restraint, fine-grained, almost silky tannins and tremendous length. VM 95 (4/2020): Opaque ruby. An exotically perfumed bouquet displays powerful aromas of black and blue fruit preserves, incense, peony and olive paste. Palate-staining blackberry, boysenberry, fruitcake and floral pastille flavors deepen steadily on the back half. Gains weight and sweetness with air, finishing with a jolt of smoky minerality, sneaky tannins and outstanding persistence. Josh Raynolds. WS 94 (2/2021): Dark and winey, with lots of steeped black cherry, plum and blackberry fruit forming the core while light sweet tapenade, rosemary and mineral notes streak through on the finish. Vivid, energetic Cornas. Best from 2022 through 2036. 1,350 cases made, 128 cases imported. |
