JS 94-95 (4/2017): A juicy and fruity red that shows reserve and structure. Full body, polished and chewy tannins and a long finish. Big wine for the vintage. Serious... again!
WA 91-93 (4/2017): The 2016 La Cabanne is a blend of 94% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc picked from the end of September. François Estager told me that like last year, he did not add any sulphites until after the malolactic fermentation. It has a well-defined bouquet with black cherries, a touch of cassis, a lovely marine influence and crushed violets. It opens beautifully in the glass. The palate is fresh on the entry with crisp, tensile tannin and very well-judged acidity. This Pomerol displays great energy and poise, fanning out on the second half that demonstrates superb mineralite. This is an unmissable follow-up to the 2015 La Cabanne. Tasted twice with consistent notes. |

JS 91-92 (4/2018): Some nice juicy fruit with mineral and salt undertones. Medium body, silky tannins and a succulent finish. Shows balance and finesse for the vintage.
VM 90-92 (5/2018): The 2017 La Cabanne is a Pomerol cru that flies just under the radar. This latest release continues to prove that François Estager owns some serious terroir, located right next to Trotanoy in fact. It has a nicely detailed bouquet with scents of blackberry, pencil lead and undergrowth aromas. It is not as complex as the 2015 or 2016 but there is palpable focus and good vigor. The palate is medium-bodied with well-defined red berry fruit laced with brown spice and a discrete, almost cola-like tincture. This feels nimble, poised and for want of a better word, joyful. It might not be the most profound Pomerol that François Estager has ever made but I can see this drinking beautifully over the next decade. Neal Martin.
WA 88-90 (4/2018): Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 La Cabanne gives up black cherries and black plums on the nose with wafts of anise, chocolate box and tilled earth. Medium-bodied, plushly textured and with plenty of density, it finishes pleasantly fruity.
JD 87-90 (4/2018): A wine that has Outstanding potential, the 2017 Château La Cabanne is a medium-bodied, bright, firm Pomerol that’s going to need some cellar age to chill out. Black fruits, charcoal, and oak give way to a nicely concentrated, backward 2017 that has bright yet integrated acidity. Hide bottles for 3-5 years. |
