WA 90 (4/2003): A subtle wine that impresses with displays of measured, incremental fruit, the 2000 offers sweet aromas of mocha, black cherries, cassis, and delicious toasty oak. Although light in the mouth, this ruby/purple-colored 2000 possesses wonderful expansive richness, a deep mid-section, and sweet tannin in the persistent finish. It is not a wine that knocks you out with a blast of fruit and wood, but rather one that impresses for its nobility/subtlety. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2019.
WS 90 (3/2003): Intense red licorice, crushed berries and flowers. Medium-bodied, with medium fine tannins and a silky finish. Not the biggest 2000, but very enjoyable. Best after 2007. 6,665 cases made.
VM 87 (6/2003): Red-ruby. Ripe aromas of plum syrup, shoe polish, roast coffee and smoky oak. Fairly expressive but cool flavors of cherry and fresh herbs. Offers good texture but misses out on the sweetness of the year. A rather subtle, understated wine that finishes with slightly dry tannins. Perhaps better than it's showing today. |

WA 96 (4/2008): The finest La Gaffeliere I have ever tasted, the prodigious 2005 boasts a dense ruby/purple color in addition to a flamboyant bouquet of lead pencil shavings, creme de cassis, blackberries, smoked meats, incense, and Asian spice. Fabulously deep and full-bodied as well as ethereal and exceptionally elegant for its explosive richness and intensity, its lightness of being reflects the vineyard’s sensational terroir. This succulent beauty appears to be approachable, but that belies some significant tannins. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2030+.
WS 93 (3/2008): Has a fabulous, opulent nose of crushed blackberry, wild licorice and flowers. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins, lots of fruit and a long finish. A flavorful young red. Best after 2013. 4,500 cases made.
VM 91 (5/2008): Medium ruby-red. Pure aromas of dark berries, graphite, licorice and spices. Spicy, very dark flavors of cassis, blackberry, minerals and spices, complicated by a musky espresso note and a whiff of smoked meat. Given lovely definition by a firm tannic spine that calls for patience.
NM 88 (12/2012): The La Gaffeliere ‘05 has an extrovert, rather alcoholic bouquet with black cherries, kirsch, incense and sloes, a touch of alcohol just smudging the overall effect. The palate is medium-bodied with dense, chocolate tinged black fruit and a rather brutish dry finish. It is not a terrible St. Emilion by a long shot, but I must say that its inadequacies are shown up amongst illustrious company. |

WA 95+ (12/2011): An absolutely spectacular effort, the 2009 is one of the all-time great La Gaffelieres produced. One would have to go back to the 2005, 1947 or 1961 to find this level of quality from this ancient, historic vineyard planted adjacent to the walls of St.-Emilion, on the Cote Pavie. Dating back to the 1400s, this estate has been owned for over three centuries by the Malet-Roquefort family. Composed of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc (in the past it was two-thirds Merlot and the rest split between Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc), the 2009 reveals compelling elegance, tremendous intensity and opulence and more viscosity than one normally sees. Lots of kirsch, licorice, incense, truffle, asphalt, blackberry and cassis notes dominate the aromatics and flavors of this full-bodied, viscous, fabulously pure, flamboyant St.-Emilion. Drinking it now may be considered infanticide by some consumers, but it is already attractive, and should last for 3-4 decades.
VM 92 (7/2012): Bright ruby-red. Jammy, exotic aromas of black raspberry and smoke; wild and slightly high-toned in a syrah way. Dense, sweet and layered, with lovely saline complexity to the ripe black raspberry flavor. Finishes sweet, plush and very long, with smooth tannins and plenty of early sex appeal. Stephen Tanzer.
WS 91 (3/2012): Very fleshy, with lush, velvety-textured plum sauce, currant paste and melted licorice notes, woven with toasty spice and backed by a dark chocolate bark note on the finish. Best from 2014 through 2023. 4,165 cases made. |

WA 95+ (2/2013): The 2010's final blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc offers up impressive levels of red, blue and black fruits as well as some toasty oak and crushed rock, giving it minerality. Of course, the acidity in this vintage, with its lower pHs than 2009, provide a freshness and precision that is rare for wines so rich. This wine has plenty of tannin, so give it 4-6 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 25-30 years.
VM 93+ (8/2013): (an 85/15 blend of merlot and cabernet franc): Good deep ruby-red. Sexy aromas reminded me a bit of Burgundy: black raspberry, spices, graphite minerality, flowers and chocolate. Then penetrating and very firmly built, with a distinctly medicinal cast to its smoky black fruit and tobacco flavors and a strong spine of acidity. Very intense and fine-grained Saint-Emilion, but lush and seamless too. This chateau has produced consistently excellent wines in recent vintages and this should be the best of the bunch with six to eight years in the cellar.
JS 92-93 (4/2011): Tasty and juicy, with a lovely blackberry and chocolate character. Round and velvety. Shows a lovely richness.
NM 89 (1/2014): Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux 2010 tasting. The La Gaffeliere feels just a little jammy on the nose compared to the Valandraud: maraschino cherries, juniper and liquorice - quite decadent and showy, some VA creeping in with time. The palate has a sweet chewy entry with firm and solid tannins. There are layers of dense red fruit and a tight, assertive finish that will need several years to soften. A little unruly at the moment, this should eventually mellow and perhaps merit a higher score.
WS 89 (12/2013): Forward, with plum, blueberry and raspberry fruit gently studded with spice shadings and a flash of anise. A friendly wine, though just a touch loosely knit in the end. Drink now through 2019. |

VM 96 (2/2017): A wine of total finesse, the 2014 La Gaffelière is gorgeous. Dark and pliant on the palate, with striking nuance, it presents a striking interplay of juicy Merlot fruit and lifted, Cabernet Franc-inflected aromatics. Silky tannins add to the wine's exceptional feel and precision. The blend is 80 % Merlot and 20 % Cabernet Franc. The 2014 spent 25-30 days on the skins, while malolactic fermentation took place partly in tank and partly in barrique. Consulting oenologists Stephane Derenoncourt and Simon Blanchard did a fabulous job with the 2014. In a word: superb! Antonio Galloni.
JS 94 (7/2017): I love the precision and verve to this with berry, sliced mushroom and flower characters. Full body, yet so tight and refined. Beautiful length and focus. Drink or hold.
WS 93 (3/2017): A lovely blackberry puree note leads this off, followed by hints of fig and plum. Alluring licorice and juniper flavors start to fill in, backed by an accent of smoldering tobacco. The structure is persistent but very fine-grained. Best from 2020 through 2030. 4,583 cases made.
JD 92 (11/2017): The 2014 Château La Gaffelière is also a beautiful wine that’s more supple, elegant and classic in style than the more concentrated 2015. Pure, seamless, and beautifully textured, this medium to full-bodied 2014 gives up impressive intensity and depth in its ripe blackcurrant, black cherries, spring flowers and mineral aromas and flavors. I love its complexity and balanced, lengthy, classic style, and it should drink handsomely for 10-15+ years. |

Exquisite aromatics and lively, red-toned fruit infuse this mid-weight, remarkably pure Saint-emilion. Spice, blood orange and floral notes add the closing layers of nuance. The 2017 really dazzles. JS 94-95 (4/2018): This very long and powerful yet all in balance and harmony. Full body and layered and chewy tannins. Softness and depth. Excellence for the vintage.
JD 90-93 (4/2018): The Grand Vin is the 2017 Château La Gaffelière. It’s a medium-bodied, balanced, downright pretty 2017 that shows the seamless, mid-weight style of the vintage nicely. Black raspberries, violets, and exotic spices all emerge from this purple-colored effort. It’s impeccably balanced, has integrated acidity, and fine tannin, all making it a high-quality wine from the vintage. It should keep for 10-15 years.
WS 89-92 (4/2018): Offers a solid blast of warm plum and blackberry preserve notes, along with a slightly hefty roasted apple wood frame. Lightly dusty tannins line the finish. The fruit core is solid but needs to push through a bit more. Wait and see. |

VM 99 (3/2021): The 2018 La Gaffelière is hands down one of the wines of the vintage. Towering in its stature and vertical lift, the 2018 dazzles right out of the gate. Inky dark fruit, mocha, spice, licorice and leather all run through this deep, wonderfully pliant Saint-Émilion. The 2018 is rich, deep and beautifully resonant, with tremendous depth and tons of stature that builds, all framed by beams of supporting minerality that confer vibrancy. La Gaffelière is distinctive, alluring and arresting right out of the gate. It is another magnificent showing from this reborn estate. The blend is 63% Merlot and 37% Cabernet Franc. Antonio Galloni.
WA 97 (3/2021): Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 La Gaffeliere is a little closed to begin, slowly unfurling to offer peeks at notions of stewed red and black plums, mulberries and Morello cherries, plus hints of damp earth, tar and bouquet garni. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is tightly wound, delivering crunchy red and black fruits with an approachable texture of fine-grained tannins and loads of freshness, finishing long with a lifted perfume. This is a refreshing, beautifully perfumed and skillfully crafted expression of the vintage. Give it 4-5 years in bottle and then enjoy it over the next 20 years+.
WS 96 (5/2021): This has a lovely core of mulled cassis, damson plum and raspberry reduction notes, framed with an applewood note that integrates nicely while red tea, savory and chalky mineral notes develop through the finish. Restrained style, precise and very long. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2024 through 2038. 5,833 cases made.
JD 93 (3/2021): Based on 63% Merlot and 37% Cabernet Franc, the 2018 Château La Gaffelière is another pretty, elegant Saint-Emilion with a classic, mineral-laced style as well as a terrific mix of finesse and richness. Black raspberries, cassis, graphite, white flowers, and chalky minerality give way to a medium to full-bodied, seamless 2018 that offers plenty of concentration, a lively, focused texture, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It's going to evolve for two decades or more. |

The medium to full-bodied palate shimmers with compelling energy, delivering layers of black and red berries with fantastic tension and finely grained tannins, finishing very long and wonderfully minerally.
VM 96-98 (5/2021): The 2020 La Gaffelière has an intriguing, complex nose, a melange of red and black fruit, cigar box, undergrowth and mint, quite mercurial in the glass as it opens with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins, a beautiful seam of acidity and perhaps the most satin-like texture I have encountered on a young La Gaffelière. It sashays to a harmonious and precise finish and lingers with wonderful mineralite. This is a magnificent prospect. Neal Martin.
