JS 96 (3/2015): Fabulous aromas of licorice, flowers and blackcurrants follow through to a full body with wonderful silky and caressing tannins and a long, flavorful finish. It’s complex and exceptional. Better in 2018 but so enjoyable to taste and drink now.
WA 95 (2/2012): It is not unusual that the 2009 La Lagune is a spectacular effort given the fact that this estate has been making terrific wines over the last decade or more. It boasts a dense purple color as well as a beautiful perfume of blueberries, mulberries, cassis, white chocolate and subtle toasty oak. Notes of Chinese black tea, cedarwood and forest floor also make an appearance in the singular aromatic and flavor profiles. This sumptuous, full-bodied La Lagune possesses low acidity, abundant but ripe, sweet tannin and a long, 45-second finish. Give this beauty 5-7 years of bottle age and drink it over the following three decades. |

WA 94 (2/2013): Another great success from proprietress Caroline Frey, the 2010 La Lagune provides an essential drinking experience, with notes of Asian plum sauce, mulberries, kirsch liqueur and black currants. The wine also exhibits a savory, rich smokiness and subtle lead pencil shaving notes. Full-bodied and pure, combining both elegance and power, this is a brilliant, very approachable effort that should hit its stride in 5-7 years and last for at least two decades. Think of it as a hypothetical blend of the 2005 and 2009. Kudos!
JS 92-93 (4/2011): What a lovely texture to the wine, with super soft and supple tannins and blackberry and currant character. Round and juicy. One of the softest and most supple 2010s. It tastes more like a 2009 in style. 50% Cabernet Sauvignon , 40% Merlot, and 10% Petit Verdot. |

JS 91 (2/2015): Intense nose of blackberries with hints of cedar and spices. Tar, too. This is a full-bodied red with chewy tannins, lovely acidity and a long, fruity finish. Drink from 2018.
WA 90 (4/2015): This property has been making excellent wines under the administration of Caroline Frey, and 2012 continues their recent success. With a deep ruby/purple color, notes of new saddle leather, graphite, blackcurrants and black cherries, a supple texture, medium to full body and beautiful purity, this is an Outstanding 2012 to drink over the next 20 years. In general, the blend tends to be approximately 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance 25% Merlot followed by 15% Petit Verdot. |

VM 92 (6/2025): The 2015 La Lagune has never really shown as well as it might. However, this bottle, poured blind, suggests that this has suddenly "awoken". It has a well-defined, estuarine-tinged bouquet with blackberry, wild hedgerow and veins of pressed violet. The oak is nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh, sapid and lightly spiced, with fine tannins and a lingering, classy finish. The 2015 is excellent. Tasted blind at the 2015 Bordeaux Ten-Year-On tasting at Farr Vintners. (Drink between 2027-2045). Neal Martin.
JD 92 (11/2017): Managed by Caroline Frey (of Paul Jaboulet Aîne in the Rhône Valley), the 2015 Château La Lagune is an impressive, elegant, concentrated Haut Medoc that’s going to be even better with short-term cellaring. Cassis, toasty oak, Asian spices, and black tea notes all emerge from this medium to full-bodied, layered and lengthy Haut-Medoc. Count me in as a fan and it’s up with the top wines produced from this estate.
WA 91 (2/2018): The 2015 la Lagune was a wine that left me perplexed out of barrel despite tasting it two or three times back in April 2016. Now in bottle, I am more optimistic, although I still have a nagging feeling that it could have been even better. It remains relatively sultry compared to its peers, with a subtle floral note accompanying the tar and cedar-infused black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied and balanced, although I maintain that it would have benefited from more substance. For sure, there is a sense of energy here, but it is a La Lagune that plays it safe; it could have striven for greater things (as it subsequently did in 2016). |

WA 92 (11/2018): The 2016 la Lagune has a medium garnet-purple color and nose of intense cassis, warm cherries, redcurrants and spice box with earth and bay leaves in the undercurrent. The medium-bodied, earth-laced palate is plush and lively, finishing long.
VM 91? (8/2020): The 2016 La Lagune has a very well-defined bouquet featuring perfumed rose petal scents flanking the cranberry and raspberry fruit; the oak here is nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and slightly tarry in style, displaying fine precision toward a finish that feels just a little dry. This is another 2016 of which I have encountered better examples in the past. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting. Neal Martin.
JD 92 (2/2019): This is a great vintage for this terrific Haut-Médoc estate, and the 2016 Château La Lagune is well worth a case purchase. Complex notes of dark fruits, cedar, cigar tobacco, and hints of saddle leather all flow to a medium to full-bodied, perfectly balanced 2016 that has sweet tannins and a great finish. It will keep for 25-30 years. |

WA 92-94 (5/2021): Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2020 La Lagune strides confidently out of the glass with bold, fantastically pure black fruit notes of crushed black plums, ripe blackcurrants and juicy blackberries, plus hints of tar, dried Provence herbs, star anise and smoked meats, with a hint of black truffles. The medium-bodied palate delivers tightly wound, bright, crunchy black fruits with plenty of freshness and an approachable, grainy texture, finishing long with loads of earthy and herbal sparks.
VM 91-93 (5/2021): The 2020 La Lagune offers intense Cabernet scents on the nose, the black fruit, tobacco, humidor and light cedar scents bursting from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins that frame the crisp black fruit. This is a classic Medoc with just the right amount of structure and dryness, partnered with assiduous sapidity that gets the saliva flowing. It should gain a little flesh during its elevage. You might call this "proper Claret." Neal Martin.
JS 93-94 (4/2021): A firm, polished red with tight, focused tannins that flow across the palate. It’s medium-to full-bodied with good length and a gorgeous finish. From organically grown grapes. |
