WA 93 (4/2003): A breathtakingly beautiful Sociando-Mallet with a dense ruby/purple color and a bouquet of ink, mineral, graphite, vanilla, and creme de cassis, the 2000 boasts superb concentration, great definition and intensity, ripe tannin, and a long finish of more than 40 seconds. This is top-flight, classified growth-quality stuff. So what's new? This continues to be an over-achieving estate! It will be long-lived. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2028. VM 93 (6/2003): Bright ruby-red. Rich, perfumed aromas of black raspberry, blackberry, minerals and cocoa powder. Big, dense, lush and deep, but with lovely sappy vinosity; this expands impressively to fill the mouth. Finishes very long, with suave, broad tannins and a note of black olive. A gloriously successful vintage for Sociando-Mallet, offering a full range of cabernet aromatics. WS 91 (3/2003): Very smoky, with charcoal, almost lamblike aromas. Full-bodied, chewy and very rich, with a thick and velvety finish. Stylish and decadent young wine. Best after 2007. 26,040 cases made. |

NM 91 (10/2009): Tasted blind at Farr's 2002 Bordeaux tasting. This is very earthy, herbaceous and leafy on the nose, but there is a sense of vigour and clarity that redeems it, developing some attractive melted tar and graphite aromas with time. Tannic palate, masculine, earthy and surly, but good fruit intensity and the austere finish would marry with food nicely. VM 89 (6/2005): Complex, slightly rustic aromas of black raspberry, mocha, smoke, game, leather and mint. Supple, sweet and rather easygoing, showing more of a merlot texture than a sample presented to me a year ago. Offers plenty of personality but can't match the 2004 or 2003 for structure or depth. Graves WA 89 (4/2005): A striking minerality, copious quantities of black currants and plums, along with some dried herbs jump from the glass of this tannic, structured, somewhat severe but large-scaled, muscular wine that oozes testosterone. Virile, structured, and perhaps too tannic for its own good, but impressively built, pure, and a wine to admire (rather than possibly enjoy), this large-scaled 2002 requires 7-10 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2025+?. WS 84 (3/2005): Dark colored but a bit herbal, almost green pepper. Medium-bodied, with aggressive tannins and a medium finish. Disappointing. Like from barrel. Best after 2007. 23,500 cases made. |

WA 93+ (6/2015): It’s hard not to admire the brilliant Jean Gautreau, who has run this great terroir and estate (just to the north of St-Estèphe’s Château Montrose) with meticulous perfection for decades. The 2005 is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc. Offering beautifully sweet crème de cassis and blueberries, this is concentrated essence of blue and black fruits, with some underlying minerality, a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, and stunning texture, length and purity. This is superb Sociando Mallet, with surprisingly sweet tannin, which is even more remarkable in this vintage of high and occasionally hard tannins. Give it another 4-5 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following 30 years. NM 93 (1/2009): Tasted single blind at Southwold. This has a very fresh, vibrant nose with good definition: blackberry, tar, scorched earth and a touch of leather. Has a certain lightness of touch on the bouquet. The palate is medium-bodied with fine earthy tannins, backward, nice focus, a slight bitterness and greenness but it only adds freshness and poise. Backward and surly on the finish but good breeding. Superb. Drink 2012-2030. VM 92 (6/2008): Good full medium red-ruby. Complex nose offers black raspberry, licorice, minerals and a whiff of leather. Brooding, ripe and deep, with terrific volume for Sociando. The black raspberry, licorice and dark chocolate flavors are full and rich but remain this side of exotic. In fact, this boasts superb balance even if it's youthfully backward today. Expands impressively on the back half, finishing with big, broad tannins and an impression of real power. Cellarmaster Faure notes that he's enjoying the '98 and '99 today, but that the 2000 and 2001 are currently quite closed. This 2005 is likely to require at least seven or eight years of patience. WS 92 (12/2014): Dark bramble, currant paste and warm fig notes pump along here, with espresso and ganache hints that stay well-integrated through the finish. A solid, muscular style. Best from 2016 through 2022. 100 cases imported. |

VM 91 (8/2011): Good bright red-ruby. Sexy, pure aromas of dark cherry, rose and violet. Juicy, delicate and penetrating, with pinot-like weight and sappiness. Displays a captivating sweetness without any loss of energy. Finishes long, with serious tongue-dusting tannins and excellent lift. Built for at least 15 years of life in bottle. As in the best vintages for this overachiever, this will make an excellent ringer in future tastings of classified growths from 2008. WA 90 (5/2011): Performing far better from bottle than it did from cask, the full-bodied 2008 offers abundant notes of plums, blueberries and black raspberries interwoven with hints of white flowers, damp earth and background oak. This impressively endowed, muscular effort will benefit from 2-4 years of cellaring and should keep for two decades. WS 88 (3/2011): Spicy, toasty oak coddles black cherry and raspberry fruit in this supple red. Light-bodied, but has just enough tannins for grip, with lively acidity carrying floral and vanilla notes through the finish. Not big, but nicely polished. Drink now through 2016. 25,416 cases made. |

VM 92-94 (6/2020): The 2019 Sociando-Mallet has a lovely bouquet with vivacious raspberry, wild strawberry and rose petal scents, touches of undergrowth coming through with time, one of the most elegant noses from this property in recent years. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, crushed stone and a discrete pinch of white pepper, focused and full of energy on the finish. What a superb Sociando-Mallet. Neal Martin JS 93-94 (6/2020): 2019 sociando |
