| VM 93 (8/2020): Annoyingly, I have not kept abreast of Bandol as I would have liked to, though I seek out its wines whenever possible. Dining at Hostellerie des Clos in Chablis recently, I spotted a 2007 Bandol from Château de Pibarnon at a very reasonable price and decided to reacquaint myself. A blend of 90% Mourvèdre and 10% Grenache from 30-year-old vines, this wine was cropped at 27hl/ha and aged for 20 months in oak cask. Showing only modest signs of maturity on the rim, it has a gorgeous bouquet of ripe raspberries, hung game and that distinctive menthol note you often find with mature Mourvèdre. (Some people describe it as an elastoplast/Band-Aid scent – there are definite similarities.) The palate is beautifully balanced and not a million miles away from a Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with its fleshy, corpulent body and its flavor profile of allspice, clove and wild fennel filtered through dark red brambly fruit. It is savory, almost gamy, toward the sensual and slightly bucolic finish. This 13-year-old Bandol is à point, although I envisage another decade of drinking pleasure, possibly more. | WA 95 (6/2016): The 2010 Bandol Rouge is a true blockbuster, and readers should do their best to latch onto a couple bottles. More serious, tight and structured than the 2011, it offers lots of minerality as well as dark fruits, peppery herbs and underbrush in a medium to full-bodied, pure, layered style that just begs to be cellared for another 4-5 years. It’s a great wine that will have two to three decades of overall longevity. |

| JD 94 (7/2026): Under seven years of age, this 2020 Bandol Pibarnon keeps all its promises. It has taken time to develop and grow more complex, with delicate oak notes and others more smoky and typical of the terroir: sour cherry jam, leather, and precious wood. | WA 93 (7/2024): The elegant and perfumed 2023 Bandol Blanc from Château de Pibarnon is a real success this year, despite a challenging vintage in the region. It evokes aromas of citrus, spring flowers, curry leaves and white fruits mingled with spicy notes. Medium-bodied, perfectly balanced and fleshy, it has a fleshy core of fruit, bright acids and a long, mineral and saline finish. This blend of 55% Clairette, 30% Bourboulenc and the rest of a mix of other white grapes is an outstanding wine. |

| VM 92 (8/2019): Glistening orange. Pungent cherry, blood orange and floral scents, along with suggestions of succulent herbs and chalky minerals. Weighty red berry, citrus fruit and candied lavender flavors show sharp delineation and pick up a deeper peach note with aeration. WA 93 (6/2023): The citrusy, mentholated 2022 Bandol Rosé was crafted with a blend of 65% Mourvèdre and 35% Cinsault and matured six months in barrels. It displays aromas of pomegranate, citrus, spring flowers, iodine, jasmine and crushed stones, followed by a beautifully defined texture, a fleshy core of fruit and racy acids that underpin a delicate, well-delineated and calcareous finish. It's going to drink nicely in its youth, but I suspect it will also age gracefully over the next 2-5 years.
VM 91 (5/2023): The 2022 Rosé is savory and sweet with a rich blend of rosemary, sage and tomato leaf, giving way to dried cherries. It's silky-smooth and round with a buzz of minerality and brisk acidity up front as ginger-spiked nectarine forms toward the close. This tapers off with a salty flourish. VM 93 (5/2025): The 2023 Bandol Rosé is a powerful, classy Rosé that delivers the proverbial “iron fist in a velvet glove.” Deep and rich, the 2023 takes its time in the glass, gradually unfurling layers of waxy cherry fruit, Mediterranean herbs, raspberry liqueur, , crushed oyster shell and dried apricot. There’s an impressive phenolic core and a wealth of complexity here, not to mention a long, long finish. This is a very serious wine with the stuffing to improve in the cellar. Billy Norris.
WA 92+ (7/2024): A blend of 65% Mourvèdre and 35% Cinsault, the 2023 Bandol Rosé from Château de Pibarnon offers up a delicate, complex bouquet of spices, licorice, red berries, lemon, spring flowers and herbs. Medium-bodied, enveloping and beautifully structured, it’s round and juicy with a delicate, lively core of fruit and a mineral, calcareous finish. This is a classical rosé wine from Bandol. |
