| VM 94 (10/2017): The 2014 Barbaresco Serraboella has quite a bit more volume and greater breadth than the Vie Erte, as it so often does, along with quite a bit of tannic heft. Here, too, readers will have to be patient, as the 2014 is austere, unyielding and massively tannic. Dark cherry, plum, tobacco, smoke, licorice and dried herbs are some of the many notes that inform this decidedly virile, potent Barbaresco. | VM 94 (10/2018): Just bottled a few weeks before this tasting, the 2015 Barbaresco Serraboella is an infant. Deep, powerful and resonant in the glass, the 2015 should be fabulous once it recovers from its recent bottling. Dark cherry, plum, menthol, licorice and spice notes abound, but the tannins remain imposing. Readers will have to be patient, but that should not be an issue here. | VM 92+ (2/2022): The 2018 Barbaresco Serraboella shows the mid-palate depth and pliancy that is typical of this site. At the same time, it is pretty closed down following its bottling about two months prior to this tasting. Succulent dark cherry, plum, spice, new leather and dried flowers develop in the glass, but only with great reluctance. This inward, brooding Barbaresco needs time. The only question is how much. | VM 93 (10/2022): The 2019 Barbaresco Bricco di Neive Vie Erte is impressive. It shows the nervous energy that has long been its signature, but with a bit more depth through the middle than in the past. Whether that is the vintage or just the quality of older vines is harder to say, but its pretty obvious the 2019 is impressive. Bright red fruit, orange peel, white pepper, mint and orange zest infuse this nervy Barbaresco from a southwest side on sand with tons of nuance. The classically austere finish, with its vibrant acids, is quite attractive. The Vie Erte was aged entirely in cask. (Drink between 2025-2039). Antonio Galloni. |
