| WA 95 (4/2015): Having just had the 2003 and 2005 from my cellar, I can attest to the magnificent turnaround in quality this famous estate on the eastern side of St.-Emilion has achieved. All of it is attributable to its dynamic proprietor, Philippe Cuvelier. The 2012 Clos Fourtet (usually 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc) has beautiful blackberry and blueberry fruit and an inky purple color. With flawless integration of acidity, tannin, wood and alcohol, a full-bodied mouthfeel and stunning richness, this is impressive and certainly one of the vintage's top wines. It should evolve beautifully for 15-20 years, and be drinkable in 3-4. Yields were a modest 32 hectoliters per hectare with the alcohol at 14%. |

JD 94-97 (4/2018): This incredible terroir located just outside the village of Saint-Emilion has turned out a spectacular 2017 that has more richness and texture than most in the vintage. A rough blend of 86% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc, brought up in 60% new barrels, the 2017 Clos Fourtet offers a deep, saturated purple color to go with a huge nose of pure red and black fruits, bouquet garni, crushed rocks, and spice box. With medium to full-bodied richness, terrific sweetness and depth of fruit, ripe tannin, and a big finish, it’s a gem in the vintage and a no-brainer purchase. Tasted twice. JS 94-95 (4/2018): A very sexy young wine with a solid center palate and refined, integrated tannins. Medium body. Everything is in the right place. WS 93-96 (4/2018): Intense, with blackberry, cassis and boysenberry puree notes racing through, inlaid with subtle anise and black tea details. Offers a gorgeous feel, with a long, fine-grained chalky spine buried on the finish. A beauty. VM 92-95 (5/2018): The 2017 Clos Fourtet is very good, but also very tightly wound. Powerful and tannic, the 2017 is likely to require many years to come in its own. Today, the 2017 is certainly less charming than some recent vintages and other 2017 Saint-emilions. There is certainly no lack of depth or concentration. The dark red/purplish berry fruit, rose petal and lavender flavors are very nicely delineated. Clos Fourtet is one of the wines that improved over the two weeks I followed it. I won't be surprised if it is even better from bottle. Antonio Galloni. WA 92-94 (4/2018): Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Clos Fourtet is scented of crème de cassis, blueberry compote and plum preserves with touches of hoisin, truffles and dark chocolate plus a waft of anise. Medium to full-bodied, the generous fruit is plushly textured with great freshness, finishing long and spicy. |

VM 95-97 (6/2020): The 2019 Clos Fourtet continues its strong run of form under the direction of Mathieu Cuvelier and his team. It sprints out of the blocks with intense blackberries, raspberry coulis, blood orange and crushed violet aromas, touches of iodine developing as it musters ever increasing delineation. The palate is medium-bodied but (as expected) contains more weight and girth compared to its peers. Firm grip, solid and yet graceful, there is a crescendo of flavours towards its heady, focused and very persistent finish. Wonderful salinity in the mouth, the aftertaste is one of the longest you will find on the Right Bank. Fabulous. Neal Martin. JD 95-97 (6/2020): Located on the upper limestone plateau and 90% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, the 2019 Château Clos Fourtet gives up a bright purple color to go with loads of black raspberry and chocolate-covered cherry fruits as well as plenty of tobacco, damp earth, and truffly aromas and flavors. It shows the vintage's purity, elegance, and sunny, sexy character to a T. It will be a brilliant Saint-Emilion that will be drinkable with just a handful of years in the cellar and evolve for 20-25 years or more. JS 95-96 (6/2020): A beautiful core of ripe fruit in the center palate with deep, dark-chocolate undertones. It’s full-bodied with layers of fruit and ripe tannins. Flavorful finish. |
