WA 93 (10/2007): The 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape, which is basically a blend of 75% Grenache aged in tank or large foudres and the rest Syrah, Mourvedre, and Cinsault, is exquisite, deeper, and richer than even the impressive 2006. Dense plum/ruby/purple with notes of incense, melted licorice, blackberry, and sweet cherry, the wine is peppery, spicy, rich, full-bodied, layered and chewy. It is a superb example of Chateauneuf du Pape that should drink well for 10-15 years.
VM 89+ (2/2008): Deep ruby. Gamey cherry and blackcurrant scents are complicated by smoked meat, licorice and dark chocolate. Chewy and sweet, with deep blackcurrant and bitter cherry flavors, and a potent olive quality on the back. Gains sweetness with air but this is pretty brooding today.
JLL **[*] (6/2008): Quite dark, evolving prune colour; tangy, tarry nose that is starting to turn mineral within its black, ripe plum, near prune fruit aroma. The palate has plenty of guts, and a straight, full delivery. Black stone fruits, prunes lead the charge in a traditional, robust way. It ends on the pepper and damp leaf of the vintage, is an honest wine. The aftertaste is coffee-like. |

WA 92-94 (10/2020): Deeper and more concentrated than the 2018, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape is as impressive as I can remember this cuvee ever being. Dark in hue, overflowing with dark fruit, full-bodied and velvety in texture, with a long, licorice-tinged finish, this looks very promising.
JD 91-93 (10/2020): Moving to the 2019 reds, the classic 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape offers a textbook Clos Saint Jean perfume of kirsch liqueur, blackcurrants, toasted spices, graphite, and peppery garrigue. This carries to a medium to full-bodied Châteauneuf with beautiful tannins, a great mid-palate, and just an overall sense of balance paired with plenty of richness and length. Beautifully done, it’s going to offer 10-15 years of prime drinking. |

| JD 98-100 (10/2017): A bigger, richer, more powerful wine, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Deus Ex Machina offers a port-like bouquet of melted licorice, ground pepper, cured meats and scorched earth. It literally made my heart rate increase. From 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvèdre brought up all in demi-muid, it’s going to be over the top for some, yet is an incredible wine that could come from nowhere else. Bravo! |

WA 98+ (10/2007): One of the candidates for the wine of the vintage is the extraordinary 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape La Combe des Fous (same blend and elevage). Probably the best cuvee of this wine yet made, the wine has a saturated purple color to the rim as well as an extraordinary nose of blackberry, blueberry, black truffle, incense, lavender, and a hint of graphite. The wine is remarkably concentrated, spectacularly pure, full-bodied, with amazing length of well over a minute. This wine is a “wow, wow" sort of wine, a profoundly great Chateauneuf du Pape. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025+.
WS 96 (4/2008): This is loaded with notes of fig cake, braised chestnut, boysenberry and raspberry ganache, and dark licorice, all held together by dense, ripe tannins. The powerful finish turns even darker, with espresso and baker's chocolate notes providing a pleasant tinge of bitterness on the frame. Best from 2011 through 2030. 150 cases made. |

JD 99 (9/2012): The 2010 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Combe des Fous is an utterly brilliant wine! A blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Cinsault, and 10% Vaccarese, it offers an extraordinary bouquet of spring flowers, sappy garrigue, ground pepper, and searing minerality that is anchored by a core of sweet red and black fruits. More elegant and seamless than the Deus-Ex Machina, it has full-bodied power, layers of texture, and a blockbuster finish that highlights masses of silky tannin. Thrilling stuff and my favorite vintage of the cuvee to date, it deserves 3-4 years of bottle age, and will evolve for 2+ decades.
VM 95 (1/2013): (made from 60% grenache and 20% syrah, with cinsault, vaccarese and muscardin): Inky ruby. Heady, spice-accented aromas of dark berry preserves, potpourri and smoky minerals. Stains the palate with intense black raspberry and lavender pastille flavors and becomes spicier with air. Powerful yet lithe and seamless, with superb finishing clarity and lingering floral notes. Tannins make a late appearance but are quickly absorbed by this wine's luscious fruit. Josh Raynolds.
WS 95 (2/2013): This is very densely packed, with toasted fig bread, charcoal, roasted espresso bean, steeped black currant and blackberry fruit, followed by a flash of pastis on the finish. Very dark and rich, but has grip and length for balance, revealing a terrific, but deeply embedded, graphite spine in reserve. Best from 2015 through 2030. 500 cases made. |

WA 98 (10/2013): Boasting incredible aromatics, and a drop-dead gorgeous wine, the 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape Combe des Fous checks in as a blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Cinsault and 10% Vaccarese. Exotic and insanely perfumed, with aromas of kirsch, blackberry, exotic pepper, lavender and sandalwood (among other things), this full-bodied beauty hits the palate with brilliant richness and depth, masses of fine tannin and incredible length on the finish. A spectacular effort that transcends the vintage, it will thrill for 15 years or more. Don’t miss it! Drink 2014-2026.
VM 93 (2/2014): Vivid ruby-red. Red berry liqueur and floral pastille aromas are complicated by hints of vanilla, incense and cola. Fleshy, mineral-laced raspberry and blueberry flavors gain sweetness and depth with air, picking up suave notes of lavender and allspice. Finishes silky and extremely long, with resonating spiciness and smooth, harmonious tannins.
WS 92 (11/2013): Very engaging, offering a blast of warm linzer torte and blackberry jam aromas, with flavors of silky-textured plum sauce and cherry preserves. Dark licorice and singed apple wood accents give the finish cut and drive, while well-embedded acidity provides support. Drink now through 2025. 50 cases imported.
JLL ***[*] (12/2012): Dark red. Smoky, oak, rather gamey air - a brooding nose that shows mulled blackcurrant and extends on a wave of licorice. The palate is blackcurrant-flavoured, with matter that is supple. Pretty juicy tannins squeeze into its late stages, are chocolate styled, have a black raisin note. It is still on the cellar over the vineyard. The fruit is not fully on the go, and suggests more display in two years or a little more. It is a sweet wine with an oaked, charry finale, the oak not excessive. From 2015. |

JD 97-99 (10/2020): Always the most elegant cuvee in the lineup from this team, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Combe Des Fous checks in as a normal blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and the rest Vacqueyras and Cinsault. It just screams Provence on the nose, with loads of blackcurrants, lavender, white chocolate, ground pepper, and assorted Asian spice-like aromas and flavors all jumping from the glass. With full-bodied richness, a multi-dimensional, layered mouthfeel, building tannins, and a great finish, this is another beautiful, seamless, elegant yet also incredibly powerful wine from this estate that will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and keep for 15-20 years or more.
WA 94-96 (10/2020): Plummy and chocolaty yet remarkably vibrant, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape La Combe des Fous comes across as richer and more powerful than the 2018. I'm not sure that's a good thing in this cuvee, as it's full-bodied, dense and a bit chunky at the moment—certainly enormously impressive, but without the elegance of the previous vintage. It will be interesting to see how it compares once it's in the bottle. |

JD 97-100 (10/2020): The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Sanctus Sanctorum is going to be one of the wines of the vintage. All Grenache sourced from a single parcel in the La Crau lieu-dit and raised all in demi-muids, it sports a more ruby/purple hue that’s not completely opaque and has an incredible bouquet of kirsch liqueur, ripe blackcurrants, scorched earth. graphite, ground pepper, and assorted cured meats. With an incredibly singular character, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness and carries incredible power and richness, yet it nevertheless still glides over the palate with no sensation of weight or heaviness, ultra-fine tannins, and a remarkable sense of purity and elegance. This is another magical Grenache from this team. It’s going to benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and knock your socks off over the following 20 years or more.
WA 96-98 (10/2020): The 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Sanctus Sanctorum—a 100% Grenache cuvee (from vines planted in 1905) matured in new demi-muids—looks to have the concentrated fruit to handle the oak better than the 2018. Dark and intense, it delivers waves of purple berries and black cherries, barely touched by vanilla and cedar. It's full-bodied and rich, and although the wood tannins do leave an impression, it's a gentle one relative to the wine's overall profile. While it may not quite equal the near-perfect 2016, it's close. |
