WA 98+ (12/2011): As I reported last year, the black/purple-tinged 2009 Cote Rotie La Landonne is an extraordinary effort. Made in a more open-knit, exuberant, flamboyant style, it possesses many of the same characteristics as the 2010, but with silkier tannins and lots of glycerin, smoked meat, violet, black currant, licorice, pepper and charcuterie characteristics. With super intensity, a full-bodied mouthfeel, lower acidity than the 2010 and sweeter tannin, it should drink well for 30+ years.
JLL ****[*] (6/2011): Full, dark red; the nose is persistent - shows smoky bacon, notions of rugged outcrops, pebbly heat - there is a southern tone to this, the heat of the south, with a mineral breeze to clarify it. Thorough, consistent palate which leads on mineral-flecked black fruit, is intricate, has smoky, rubbed stones in its mix. There is a touch of sucrosity from its lees raising for now, a temporary stage. It is less open than the Maugiron 2009 now. A gradual improver and developer over time. From mid-2013 or 2014.
VM 94 (4/2012): Opaque purple. An explosive, heady bouquet evokes red and dark berry preserves, incense, Asian spices and potpourri; you could scent a room with this stuff. Palate-staining raspberry and blueberry flavors are lifted by zesty mineral and spice notes and show Outstanding vivacity and focus. Pure, energetic and sweet on the finish, which refuses to let up. Grange told me that the reason Delas doesn't make this wine every year--as in 2008, for example--"is because we want it to be a truly great expression of Cote-Rotie or not to exist at all. If it isn't superb, it doesn't get bottled, period." |

| WA 97 (3/2017): One of the wines of the vintage is unquestionably the 2006 Hermitage les Bessards, which comes from one of the greatest terroirs for Syrah in the world. Still youthful and vibrant, with those classic graphite and crushed rock characteristics that define this cuvee, as well as loads of black fruits, toasted spice and dried flowers, this beauty is full-bodied, uber-concentrated and gorgeously pure. It’s still 4-5 years away from full maturity, and is going to keep for 2-3 decades. |

WA 100 (12/2012): The uber-impressive 2010 Hermitage Les Bessards ranks alongside the perfect 2009. The strikingly intense powdered stone/granite minerality is apparent in this wine of great intensity, prodigious, almost skyscraper-like texture, massive body and high tannins. It is only for true connoisseurs who have a cold cellar as well as the patience to wait a minimum of a decade for it to round into drinking form. Filled with potential, it is one of the single greatest Hermitages I have ever tasted. There is no hint of its 100% new oak aging!
JLL ****** (11/2012): Dark rumble of red in a dark-tinted robe. The nose is centred around a copious, but well manageable beef stock aroma, shows pepper, Bovril stock, fluid liqueur black fruit, suggests many layers before you reach its heart. Has gras in abundance, offers raspberry, black cherry, oak in the second rank. The palate spreads its gras richness with precise reach; it is all wrapped together, is well-balanced. It has a shade more coating then the regular Domaine des Tourettes 2010. This is Limousine Service Hermitage steered by a chauffeur with a tang in his accent and his hat at a tilt. Grainy tannins and oily berry combine at the end. It is mighty on its freshness and poise. This is an intellectual vintage - not an open book. “It is so pure and refined, so dense and tightly packed - will people understand this?", Claire Darnaud, winemaker.
WS 96 (11/2013): Dark and inviting, with lots of braised plum, fig paste, warm black currant confiture, freshly brewed espresso and baker's chocolate notes wound together and held in check for now by hefty grip. An echo of iron on the finish keeps this grounded. Should unwind slowly, maintaining a serious bass line. Best from 2015 through 2030. 150 cases imported.
VM 95 (4/2013): Bright purple. Black and blue fruits, incense and candied violet on the heady, intensely perfumed nose. Sappy, penetrating and pure, its deep black raspberry and blueberry flavors lifted by juicy acidity. Stains the palate and shows uncanny precision for its power. Closes sweet and very long, with youthful tannins and resonating spice and floral pastille notes. |

WA 98 (5/2021): Boasting classic Les Bessards notes of sun-warmed cassis and crushed stone, the 2018 Hermitage Les Bessards has turned out to be a magnificent wine—a close rival to the potentially perfect 2015. Full-bodied and velvety, concentrated and tannic, overflowing with notes of grilled plums, grilled meat and black olives, it's all topped off by a forever finish that remains fresh and cleansing, courtesy of lingering salted-licorice flavors and the texture of finely ground stone dust. Try a bottle after 2025, if you can wait that long.
JD 97 (11/2020): A stunning Hermitage in every sense, the 2018 Hermitage Les Bessards comes from the steep, broken granite soils of the Les Bessards lieu-dit on Hermitage Hill. Revealing a deep purple/violet color, it has a gorgeous nose of crème de cassis, scorched earth, violets, pepper, and a liquid rock-like minerality. It’s full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, with background oak, flawless balance, ripe yet present tannins, and a great, great finish. It's not a massive Hermitage (especially by this cuvée’s standards in the past) yet has gorgeous purity of fruit and an incredible sense of class. Give bottles 4-5 years (it offers pleasure even today) and it should keep for 30+ years or more.
VM 96 (12/2022): Glass-staining ruby. Hugely perfumed, mineral-accented black and blue fruit preserves, floral oil, olive paste, pipe tobacco and exotic spice aromas show superb clarity and pick up a hint of smokiness with air. Juicy and expansive on the palate, offering alluringly sweet kirsch, cassis, fruitcake and cola flavors that deepen slowly through the back half. Shows fine delineation and vibrant, mineral lift on an impressively long, chewy and floral-accented finish that's framed by steadily building tannins. Josh Raynolds. |

JD 99 (8/2022): My favorite release from this estate is consistently their Les Bessards Hermitage, and their 2019 is no exception. Coming from the western part and pure broken granite soils on the west side of this magical hill, it sports a dense purple hue to go with a brilliant perfume of cassis, graphite, scorched earth, burning embers, spring flowers, and peppery herbs. Incredibly complex, layered, and nuanced, with classic Hermitage characteristics, it still stays firmly planted in the ripe, sunny, sexy vintage. Full-bodied, concentrated, and structured on the palate, it has a wealth of tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. This is pure Hermitage magic that needs to be forgotten for 4-5 years and will evolve for 20-30 years in cold cellars. Hats off to the team at Delas for another incredible wine.

Fleshy and broad on the palate but surprisingly energetic as well, offering intense, mineral-driven black raspberry, boysenberry, kirsch, allspice and licorice flavors, with a suave touch of candied flowers. Finishes chewy, vibrant and impressively long, with resonating florality and youthfully firm tannins that don't detract from the wine's intense fruit. (Drink between 2029-2039) Josh Raynolds. |

| VM 93 (12/2022): Inky ruby. Dark berries, potpourri, exotic spices and a strong suggestion of smoky minerals on the expansive nose. Juicy, penetrating and finely detailed, offering densely packed, intense blackberry, cherry compote and violet flavors that are underscored by a vein of juicy acidity.
