BH 91-93 (1/2005): This is more of everything here including aromatic complexity, size, weight, muscle and sheer depth. The aromas here are truly remarkable with raspberry and ripe black berry notes complemented by spicy plum and a smoky perfume that is akin to musk. The rich, intense and full-bodied flavors are relatively supple yet wrapped in dense but fine tannins buffered by superb mid-palate sap. This is hugely long with a powerful and quite chewy finish. This should age for 25 to 30 years, perhaps longer as the balance is spot on. Drink 2013+. Don't miss! VM 90-94 (4/2005): Good deep bright red. Enticing aromas of black raspberry, coffee, mocha and sexy oak. Then less exotic than usual for this wine at this early stage of its evolution: saline and savory, with notes of underbrush but not the normal India n spices. Perhaps a bit youthfully tight today. Quite restrained in its sweetness and not yet showing much complexity. Finishes with big, broad tannins and very good length. WA 93 (8/2005): Loads of spices are intermingled with blackberries and black cherries in the wonderful aromatics of the 2003 Chambertin-Clos de Beze. A bold, ample, medium to full-bodied wine, it expands on the palate, revealing great breadth and richness. Hugely spicy, this candied blackberry-dominated effort sports a persistent finish crammed with solid tannin. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2020. |

| BH 91-94 (1/2006): Like the Ruchottes compared to the prior wines, this is an immediate and clear step up in quality and breed with a densely fruit and superbly complex nose of spice, earth, ripe red fruit aromas, leather and underbrush that leads to rich, supple, elegant and pure flavors where the structure arrives all at once on the seriously long finish. This is not a big Bèze by the usual Rousseau standards yet the explosive finish and Outstanding depth suggest that this will age well and hold for much longer. Drink 2012+. Don't miss! |

WS 96 (7/2010): Though compact now, this is full of sweet black cherry, black currant, licorice and mineral aromas and flavors. There's a harmonious feeling overall, with dense, well-integrated tannins and bright acidity, followed by a fine, lingering aftertaste. Best from 2014 through 2032. 27 cases imported. BH 92 (1/2009): ( from yields of only 17 hl/ha in 2006.) This departs from its normal expressiveness by being much more restrained and if not backward, then at least relatively reticent on the spicy red berry fruit nose that quietly introduces very concentrated, brooding, superbly powerful and equally well focused flavors underpinned by very firm tannins and plenty of underlying tension as you can really sense the energy here on the youthfully austere and ever so slightly dry finish that doesn't have the same phenolic ripeness level as the Chambertin. It's interesting because this is so cool and backward that in 2006, it's more Chambertin than Bèze. Drink 2018+. |

BH 97 (1/2015): A highly spiced and exceptionally fresh, ripe and airy nose mixes a wide variety of mostly red berry fruit aromas though there are background notes of plum, cassis, lavender and oak. The broad-shouldered flavors possess a seductive texture thanks to the copious amounts of dry extract that push the very firm tannic spine to the background. I very much like the concentration here as well as the vibrancy and this is very, very dry in the best sense of the term, indeed it is presently almost crisp yet the very dense supporting tannins are clearly quite ripe. This should be a fantastic Bèze in time and eventually the 2012 could rank among the great vintages for this storied wine. Drink 2032+. WA 96-98 (12/2013): The 2012 Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru is being matured entirely in new wood as usual. That comes through strongly on the nose but there is sufficient fruit to absorb that after one more winter in barrel. The palate is extremely well balanced with that hint of licorice present right from the entry. The acidity is superbly pitched and it effortlessly glides to a long, lightly spiced, candied finish that Frederic himself commented reminded him of “Zan” (a French confectionary). This is a cerebral Clos de Beze that will deserve a decade in the cellar. VM 93-95 (1/2014): Layers of blue/blackish toned fruit, cloves, smoke and licorice from the backdrop for Rousseau's 2012 Chambertin Clos de Beze. There is plenty of Beze explosiveness and structure in the glass to match the wines' brooding personality and persistence. |

WA 91-93 (5/2011): The 2009 Charmes-Chambertin emerges from the glass with lovely radiance and openness in its ripe, juicy fruit. The Charmes is already rather forward, and at this stage appears to be a relatively early-maturing wine. The oak is also a bit pronounced. Sweet, textured floral notes wrap around the long, polished finish. Rousseau’s Charmes is technically 60% Mazoyeres. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2029. BH 89-92 (1/2011): A high-toned and fresh nose of wild raspberries, cranberries and warm earth aromas gives way to round, supple and unusually sophisticated medium-bodied flavors that possess lovely detail on the persistent finish. This is actually less complex than the Cazetiers though it might catch up in time. Drink: 2019+. VM 87-90 (2/2011): Medium red. High-toned aromas of cherry and rose petal. Very sweet and ripe but not quite fat, conveying a distinct impression of surmaturite Seems higher in volatile acidity than the foregoing samples, with the warmth of the vintage currently overshadowing the terroir Rousseau told me he always picks these vines second, following the Gevrey villages. |

VM 91 (3/2014): Red stone fruits, plums, menthol, rose petals and spices take shape nicely in the 2011 Charmes-Chambertin. In 2011, the Charmes-Chambertin is a bit savory and herbal, but it otherswise shows lovely balance and terrific overall depth in a pliant, mid-weight style that is best enjoyed over the next 10-15 years. BH 89-92 (1/2013): (from a 1.4 ha parcel of roughly 20 year old vines that is situated one-third in Charmes proper and the remainder in Mazoyères) In contrast to the reduction present in the prior wines this is really quite aromatically lovely with its expressive nose of very fresh red berry fruit, earth and humus scents. There are the same kinds of very fine-grained tannins underpinning the opulent yet reasonably precise medium weight flavors that culminate in a balanced and persistent if slightly less complex finish. Drink 2019+. VM 89-92 (1/2013): (two-thirds from Mazoyeres): Good full medium red. Expressive nose melds redcurrant, mocha, rust, minerals and flowers, plus a suggestion of game birds. Sweet, smoky and nicely concentrated, with a musky quality to the complex flavors of redcurrant, smoky minerality, mocha and game. Finishes with supple tannins and excellent length. Very Gevrey. WA 90 (11/2014): Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. Rousseau’s Charmes-Chambertin 2011 has an earthy bouquet, just a little stemmy but nicely defined with brambly red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins and plenty of tertiary fruit, foursquare and a little austere on the saline, angular finish that does improve in the glass. This just needs to find its groove, but there is potential, especially because it performed so exquisitely a few months back. |

WA 94-96 (12/2013): The 2012 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has an exquisite bouquet with fragrant wild strawberry, bergamot and forest floor that simmers with tension, subtle touches of cassis unfolding in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp, slightly chalky tannins, over a layer of effervescent candied fruit – mandarin and apricot enriching the finish. This is such a pretty thing, surely destined to be irresistible in its youth. VM 92-94 (1/2014): Intensity and volume are the first things that come to mind in the 2012 Charmes-Chambertin. Layers if blue/blackish fruit blossom in a wine that is beautifully textured and vibrant throughout. I very much like the intensity here. I tasted two different barrels of Charmes, both in different states of their evolution, which is why generally speaking I feel the wines aren't fully formed just yet. BH 90-93 (1/2014): (from a 1.4 ha parcel of roughly 20 year old vines that is situated one-third in Charmes proper and the remainder in Mazoyères) A beautifully elegant essence of red berry fruit nose enjoys added breadth in the form of spice, earth and gentle floral nuances. I very much like the sense of freshness and vivacity to the medium weight plus flavors that possess fine detail and a hint of minerality that continues onto the silky and saline-inflected finish. This wine has made a great deal of progress over the past 5 vintages or so and 2012 continues that trend. Drink 2022+. |

WA 93-95 (12/2016): The 2015 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru offers a mixture of red and black fruit on the nose, later orange rind and hints of Seville orange marmalade coming forth, though generally remaining more backward compared to recent vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannin, quite structured and perhaps a little Mazis-Chambertin in style. It is endowed with plenty of crunchy black and red fruit developing towards the finish with a potent spiciness that lingers in the mouth. This is a vivacious Charmes-Chambertin even if, to be honest, it is surpassed by the other grand crus in this vintage. VM 91-93 (1/2017): Healthy deep medium red. Medicinal red cherry, dried rose and a whiff of iron on the captivating nose. Sweeter and silkier than the foregoing premier crus, offering considerable charm to its dark cherry and floral flavors. Finishes with broad, dusty tannins, lovely length and seductive rose petal lift. Stephen Tanzer. BH 91-94 (1/2017): (from a 1.4 ha parcel of roughly 20 year old vines that is situated one-third in Charmes proper and the remainder in Mazoyères.) This is aromatically more elegant if perhaps not quite as ripe as the Cazetiers with its herbal tea, forest floor, red cherry and softly spicy and earthy aromas. The supple, round and delicious flavors possess a seductive mouth feel but with more size, weight and mid-palate concentration that helps to buffer the firmer tannic spine on the balanced and harmonious finale. Lovely and I like the complexity here. Drink 2027+. |

BH 90-93 (1/2010): A surprisingly high-toned nose of cranberry and raspberry trimmed in a bit of warm earth introduces very forward yet precise flavors that are quite round and supple yet deliver excellent authority and impressive depth on the balanced and lingering finish. This is not a big example or even especially muscular but it's harmonious and should age well. Drink 2018+. VM 90+ (4/2011): Pale-medium red. Musky cherry, fresh herbs, brown spices and menthol on the nose and palate; more primary than the Mazy-Chambertin. Then sweeter and larger-scaled but backward today and showing a medicinal austerity. I like this wine's intensity of flavor and palate presence. Finishes with a broad, fine dusting of tannins that spread out to saturate the palate and leave the taste buds vibrating. WA 89-90 (6/2010): New leather, black tea, and bright cherry and plum scent Rousseau’s 2008 Clos de La Roche, which comes to the palate bright and with tart chew of fruit skins and smokiness of black tea serving for invigoration in a finish of impressive persistence. Less exuberant and multi-faceted today than the corresponding Mazy, this also displays more aggressive - faintly gum-numbing - tannins than the several wines that preceded it in the present line-up. |

VM 93-95 (1/2017): (20% new oak): Dark red. Superb precision and lift to the aromas of boysenberry, violet and licorice. Rich, sexy and voluptuous, with its fine-grained dark fruit flavors perfectly complemented by integrated oak. Consistent from start to vibrant, rising, extremely long finish, this wonderfully perfumed Clos de la Roche should be Outstanding Stephen Tanzer. WA 92-94 (12/2016): The 2015 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru took a while to open in the glass, which is unusual because I often find it relatively immediate. It is understated, again, very pure and charming with crushed strawberry, raspberry preserve and rose petal, sous-bois scents (pine cone and freshly tilled soil) surfacing with continued aeration. The palate is grainy on the entry with a tang of orange rind, tight at first but opening up towards the finish with a good grip, albeit without quite the precision of the Mazy-Chambertin at the moment. BH 92-94 (1/2017): (from a 1.48 ha holding, 1 ha of which is in Les Fremières and the rest in Clos de la Roche proper; 20% new wood in 2015.) A discreet lashing of wood easily allows the equally sauvage-suffused nose to display its array of various dark berries, earth, floral and soft underbrush scents. The energetic and beautifully well-detailed medium weight flavors exude a subtle minerality on the muscular finish that exhibits focused power and excellent persistence. This is one of those relatively rare wines that will age effortlessly for years yet should be enjoyable the entire way. Drink 2032+. |

VM 88-90 (1/2014): The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin is soft, silky and delicate on the palate. Sweet red berries, mint and floral notes meld together nicely in the glass. Today the 2012 is solid, if not quite the overachiever it can be. BH 87-90 (1/2014): (from 7 different vineyards located primarily in the dejection cone east of the village.)An elegant and pure nose features aromas of various wild red berries and plenty of earth and sauvage character. A restrained and cool mouth feel characterizes the lightly mineral and saline-inflected middle weight flavors that possess both good balance and delineation on the lingering finish. This will be approachable young if desired. Drink 2019+. WA 87-89 (12/2013): The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin Village is a blend of seven parcels and from this year, two less than previous years since they have now been rented to other producers, reducing the village cru from 2.4ha to 1.8ha. It has a fresh bouquet with lifted raspberry and fresh strawberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with sweet red cherry, quite candied fruit and a long licorice-tinged finish. Fine. |

| BH 92 (3/2019): Fresh and still youthful aromas are composed by notes of cool essence of red berries, earth, spice and a whiff of wood character. The round, supple and relatively forward middle weight flavors evidence plenty of minerality on the focused and sneaky long finish that tightens up noticeably as it sits on the palate. This well-made and utterly delicious effort isn't seductive but I like the delivery and balance and while it could certainly be enjoyed now, I would continue to hold it for up to another decade. WA 95-97 (12/2013): The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint Jacques was raised in 80% new oak. It has a very fragrant bouquet with pure raspberry and wild strawberry fruit interlaced with minerals, forest floor and hints of iodine. This premier cru is imbued with a sense of completeness on the nose, as if anything more would be superfluous. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins on the entry. There is real tension here from the very start: supreme focus and a brooding sense of power towards the long, insistent finish with touches licorice on the aftertaste. VM 93-96 (1/2014): (70% new oak): Bright medium red. Red cherry, rose petal and lots of spicy oak on the scented nose. Silky, sappy and vibrant, showing an urgent, sweet crushed red fruit character complicated by flowers and spices. Displays an almost candied character but remains magically fresh, savory and light on its feet. The wonderfully horizontal, utterly suave finish leaves the mouth vibrating. Eric Rousseau told me that he and Sylvie Esmonin were the last of the five owners of Clos-Saint-Jacques to harvest in 2012. BH 92-95 (1/2014): (from a 2.2 ha parcel raised in 70% new wood) There is a deft touch of wood to the ultra-elegant essence of red pinot fruit, floral elements and wet stone scents. This is splendidly well-detailed with a terrific sense of underlying tension adding energy to the medium weight flavors that brim with a fine minerality before culminating in a balanced and stunningly long finish. This isn't necessarily more complex than either the Clos de la Roche or the Clos des Ruchottes but it is longer and the additional length gives the Clos St. Jacques a slight edge. Drink 2024+. Don't miss! Outstanding! |

| BH 96 (1/2018): There is just enough wood present to mention but not so much as to materially detract from the attractively fresh, cool, pretty and airy red berry, earth, humus, anise and rose petal-scented aromas. The refined yet quite powerful middle weight are almost painfully intense and there is so much minerality the mouthfeel is akin to rolling small stones around in your mouth particularly so on the sappy, palate coating and hugely long finish. This too is seriously impressive and very classy. (Drink starting 2032). |

BH 93 (11/2005): The phenomenal aromatic complexity displayed by this wine from cask is still present with relatively tight but not hard frank, direct and robust flavors that have plenty of buffering fat and superb length. As I noted in my original tasting note, this will not compete for the longest lived Rousseau Chambertin yet it is packed, powerful and beautifully complex and is an Outstanding wine in any context but particularly so for the vintage. Because there is so much fat, this can be enjoyed now but will clearly offer more fireworks in the future so I would be inclined to let this baby rest for at least another 5 years and longer if you can keep your hands off of it. Drink: Try from 2012+ VM 92+ (4/2003): Good medium red. Cooler, more aristocratic nose than the Clos de Beze: blackberry, violet, minerals. Supple and suave but quite pure and sharply focused, with a degree of precision rare for the vintage. Finishes with terrific grip. Like the Clos Saint-Jacques and Clos de Beze, this may well ultimately merit a higher score. |

JS 96 (6/2016): Domaine Armand Rousseau is part of the gold standard for Burgundy lovers, especially in Hong Kong. Yesterday I tasted reds from his two top vineyards from the extremely hot vintage of 2003. I wasn't expecting to find truly great wines, but Rousseau's Chambertin was just that. It showed crazy aromas of shitake mushrooms and dried cherries and strawberries. It was full body with velvety tannins and a long and intense finish. Lots of fruit but not too much. It was so integrated and beautiful for the vintage. Drink or hold. WS 96 (5/2007): A supple red, this exudes cinnamon, plum and cocoa aromas augmented by flavors of licorice and mineral, with a long, lively finish. Balanced, yet needs time to integrate the dense tannins. Will be terrific in about 10 years. Best from 2012 through 2030. 64 cases imported. BH 93 (4/2017): (opened from personal storage). Somewhat curiously given the natural coolness of Chambertin, this seems noticeably riper than the '03 Clos de Bèze (see herein) with notes of mocha, spice, earth and markedly ripe black currant aromas. There is excellent size, weight, concentration and power to the big-bodied and extract-rich flavors that coat the mouth before culminating in a lightly mineral-inflected, velvety and as the nose suggests, mocha-tinged finish. This is more 2003 in basic character than the Bèze though as is usually the case, it's more structured as well though with 45 minutes in a decanter, this too could be drunk now with pleasure. That said, I would be inclined to give this at least 6 to 10 more years first though please be aware that this will be capable of holding for decades. Multiple, and consistent, notes save for the fact that some examples seem to display more prominent wood than others. Drink 2023+. VM 93 (4/2006): Medium red. Aromas of raspberry, minerals and smoked meat, with a positive earthy nuance. Dense and sweet, with a wonderfully silky, thick texture and solid mineral underpinning. This is thicker and broader than the Clos Saint-Jacques but more backward. Mounts slowly toward the back and builds impressively, finishing with a hint of medicinal austerity. This is quite fresh for the year, and the tannins are fine. Stephen Tanzer. WA 92 (8/2005): Red cherries, super-ripe raspberries, fresh blackberries and spices make up the aromatic profile of the 2003 Chambertin. Medium to full-bodied and silky-textured in both the attack and mid-palate, this wine exhibits Outstanding amplitude and depth. Assorted sweet black fruits are interspersed with a myriad of spices in its complex character. Its extensive finish displays copious quantities of firm, slightly rough tannin. Projected maturity: 2009-2020. BH 91-93 (1/2005): A deeply pitched yet wonderfully elegant nose of black pinot fruit, game even slightly animale and subtle underbrush notes complement perfectly balanced, pure and powerful flavors that pack plenty of punch and superb length. This is a big if not massive wine with a dusty, lingering finish of real style and grace. At the moment, this is actually more refined than the Bèze, which is usually not the case at this early stage. This should age well for years and it will require at least a decade to really begin strutting its stuff. Drink 2013+. Don't miss! |

WA 95 (9/2008): Easily the best out of over sixty wines shows at the IMW 2004 Burgundy tasting although I could have predicted that anyway! The bouquet is understated with ripe cherry, raspberry, blueberry and a touch of spice. But what distinguishes it is how natural it is. The palate is full-bodied, very harmonious with beautifully knit tannins. Wild strawberry, red cherry, a hint of cooked meats and orange peel. Completely harmonious and focused towards the crisp but focused finish. A gorgeous 2004 that really shows its class. Tasted February 2007. VM 88 (8/2021): The 2004 Chambertin Grand Cru from Rousseau has a rather stemmy, slightly mulchy nose, which is expected from this vintage, irrespective of how noble the vineyard or producer. It is nicely defined, with brown spices developing, though here is it predictably dwarfed by the 1996. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip and hints of kirsch, Bing cherry, tobacco and stewed black tea, though I find the finish a little short and bitter. Drink soon. Tasted at Noizé restaurant in London. Neal Martin. BH 91-94 (1/2006): The difference between Chambertin and Clos de Bèze is sharply etched in 2004 as this is bigger, richer and more powerful though less elegant and with a more limited range of spices specifically and aromatic breadth in general. The medium full flavors are tight, precise and very pure with extraordinarily good punch and precision, all wrapped in a firm, dusty and linear finish. I particularly like the mouth coating quality of the flavors as there is ample dry extract here, which serves to perfectly buffer the firmly tannic spine. Outstanding stuff and while not a truly great Rousseau Chambertin, it's knocking on the door. Drink 2014+. Don't miss! |

WS 95 (4/2010): This muscular red shows macerated cherry and plum flavors, with leather, tobacco and a wild, feral character. Smooth and concentrated, with a long finish of sweet fruit and mineral. A chewy version. Best from 2014 through 2030. 45 cases imported. VM 94+ (4/2010): Good full red-ruby. More reserved on the nose than the Beze, with terrific sappy verve to its aromas of dark fruits, violet, crushed stone, iron and camphor. Juicy, tightly wound and very intense on first pour, but opened spectacularly in the glass to show Outstanding creamy depth without any loss of energy. Today the wine's saline earth tones and minerality have the upper hand over its fruit. There's less easy sweetness here than the Clos de Beze is displaying, but the slow ripening of the vintage is apparent, and the finishing flavors go on and on. It would be a rare (and expensive) treat to try these two wines side by side in 2020 or so. BH 94 (1/2010): By contrast to the Clos St. Jacques and the Bèze, the Cham has already eaten its wood which allows free rein for the spicy, pure, elegant and restrained earthy red pinot fruit with animale hints and ample mineral notes to dissolve seamlessly into dusty, textured, precise and palate staining big-bodied flavors that are exceptionally tight on the linear but hugely long finish. At present, the Bèze appears to have slightly better underlying material but we'll see in time as both are sensational plus the Cham has a long demonstrated ability to add weight in bottle. Drink 2019+. |

| BH 98 (1/2012): This is also ultra-pure and densely fruited with notes of anise, mint, wet stone and a sauvage hint that introduces intensely earthy and mineral-driven big-bodied flavors that are rich, powerful, serious and densely concentrated, all wrapped in a silky, palate staining, explosive and colossally persistent finish. This is actually relatively expressive and approachable for a young Cham yet the balance and harmony is present for this to age for decades. A brilliant effort and one of the best vintages ever for this justifiably revered wine. Drink 2029+. |

VM 98+ (4/2013): Medium red, a bit less saturated than the Clos de Beze. Pungent aromas of wild red berries, smoke, earth, iron and wild herbs. Almost shockingly silky in the mouth, but with crushed-stone minerality lending force to the blackberry, licorice and earth flavors. Incredibly sappy but edge-free wine with an explosive, endless finish that titillates the salivary glands. Longer than the Clos de Beze but that wine is a bit sweeter today, with darker, more exotic flavors. This Chambertin is not yet showing its flesh but if it puts on weight with extended bottle aging, which I expect it to do, it may eventually merit a perfect score. A monument of the vintage. BH 98 (1/2013): Somewhat ironically, this is both more elegant and fresher than the Clos de Bèze with one of the most complex noses of the entire vintage as it combines a seemingly endless array of spice, mineral, fruit and Gevrey sauvage characters. The impressively rich, serious, mouth coating and broad-shouldered flavors possess superb volume and muscle on the sensationally persistent and explosive finish. This is even more backwards than the Bèze and should be capable of rewarding 20 plus years of cellar time as the tannins are also quite fine but very dense. At such an early juncture I honestly can't say whether this will exceed the brilliant 2009 but it just might as the 2010 is clearly one of the best five wines of the vintage. Drink 2027+. |

VM 97 (3/2016): Very good deep red. Closer to the CSJ than to the CDB on the nose, offering terrific pungent lift to the aromas of black raspberry, rose petal and blood orange. Wonderfully sappy and pure, without any impression of weightiness to its saline flavors of raspberry, spices and white pepper. Utterly fine-grained, silky wine with great finesse. One of the longest, most palate-saturating wines of this vintage, finishing with noble tannins and taste bud-titilllating perfume. Perfectly balanced also but built for a glorious evolution in bottle. It would be a shame to open this bottle too soon. Stephen Tanzer. BH 96 (1/2016): Once again subtle reduction pushes the underlying fruit to the background so I recommended decanting it for those of you who can't wait at least 5 years to try a bottle. There is even more size, weight and intensity to the velvety, powerful and opulent big-bodied flavors that possess an abundance of palate soaking dry extract that pushes the otherwise tightly coiled tannins to the background on the massively long coffee-inflected finish that really fans out as it sits on the palate. This is very firmly structured but actually a bit less austere than it usually is and thanks to the abundant dry extract might be approachable a bit sooner than usual too. In short, this brilliant effort is one of the greatest wines of the 2013 vintage. Drink 2035+. |

| BH 97 (1/2017): There is enough wood to notice framing the exuberantly spicy red and dark currant aromas that display an abundance of sauvage and earth nuances. The cool and pure medium weight plus flavors are remarkably refined for a young Chambertin yet there is clearly plenty of power lurking beneath the refined veneer. This is a big but not massive vintage for the Rousseau Cham and I like the sense of proportion and particularly so on the harmonious, superbly long and seamlessly well-balanced finale. As is the case with the 2015 vintage, it's going to be very interesting to see which of these two is the better wine in 15 to 20 years. Drink 2032+. |

BH 97 (1/2020): (2.55 ha; 100% new wood.) Discreet wood is present on the ultra-fresh and incredibly spicy though even more restrained nose that reflects notes of red berries, the sauvage, earth, floral and exotic tea wisps. The gorgeous mouthfeel of the imposingly constituted and admirably concentrated flavors is one of contrasts as the mid-palate is quite supple yet the powerful, driving, austere and muscular finish is robust, serious and austere. This almost painfully intense wine is jaw droppingly good and somewhat curiously relative to how the Chambertin and the Clos de Bèze typically show at this stage, the Chambertin is the flashier of the two. We'll see in time though as it's usually the Chambertin that goes into a shell only to emerge 20+ years later. Be that as it may, today this is a genuine 'wow' wine. Drink 2037+. WA 96-98 (1/2019): The king of the cellar is the 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru, a beautiful wine that offers up aromas of sweet cherries, wild berries, raw cocoa, warm spices and candied peel, complemented by ineffable savory nuances and a classy top note of peony. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and vibrant with juicy acids and a deep core of vibrant fruit that largely cloaks its fine structuring tannins. The Clos de Bèze may be richer and heartier, but the Chambertin is finer, longer and more complete. VM 96-98 (1/2019): The 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru has an extraordinarily detailed and intense bouquet with a cornucopia of vibrant red cherries, crushed strawberry, cranberry and stony aromas, the latter becoming more and more intense with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with impressive body and depth. It is beautifully balanced with svelte tannin, velvety smooth with ample red fruit and spicy finish that lingers for 60 seconds in the mouth. Noble and aristocratic - just as Chambertin ought to be. Neal Martin. |

| BH 98 (1/2022): (2.55 ha; 100% new wood.) This too evidences subtle wood influence on the ripe yet cool nose that combines notes of spice, earth and floral elements with those of dark berries and poached plum. There is excellent intensity to the full-bodied, concentrated and mineral-inflected flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract while delivering excellent depth and persistence on the beautifully balanced and imposingly powerful if decidedly compact finale. This strikingly pure effort is already Zen-like in its sense of harmony and should prove to be remarkably long-lived. Brilliant. Drink 2041+. |

| BH 99 (1/2022): A distinctly cool and exuberantly fresh nose features reticent wonderfully spiced notes of various dark berries along with forest floor nuances that include humus and earth. The intensity of the imposingly broad-shouldered and muscular flavors is borderline painful with impressive power on the hugely long finish that is supported by incredibly dense but quite fine-grained tannins. This is magnificent and a wine of class and grace that will justly vie for wine of the vintage honors when it's time for such assessments. It's extremely rare that I put 30-year initial drinking windows for modern red Burgundies, but my prediction is that this stunningly brilliant wine will age glacially. Drink 2050+. |

WA 93-95 (12/2013): The 2012 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has a well-defined bouquet with lively red berry fruit mixed with bergamot and fresh strawberry. It does not quite have the presence of say Bernard Dugat’s example: more introverted and bashful. The palate is medium-bodied with candied red fruit on the opening, luscious red berries laced with orange zest and a hint of vanilla. The finish is nigh irresistible – full of vigor and tension with peach on the aftertaste. After a slow opening this finishes with grandeur and ambition. VM 92-94 (1/2014): Delicate and lithe on the palate, the 2012 Mazy-Chambertin is intensely perfumed and sensual. This is typical Mazy. High-toned aromatics and bright red fruits abound in a pretty, sophisticated Burgundy. Vibrant saline notes linger on the finish. BH 91-93 (1/2014): (from Mazis-Bas) There is enough reduction present to hide the underlying fruit though it does appear to be quite ripe. There is excellent punch and power to the big-bodied, intense and muscular flavors that brim with palate coating and tannin buffering dry extract on the pungently mineral-driven and beautifully long finish. This is very Mazis in character yet it's not especially rustic. Drink 2024+. |

| VM 90-93 (1/2016): (aged in 10% new oak, but most of the rest of the wine was racked into very young barrels in June): Healthy medium red. Sexy oak notes of coffee, mocha and spices complement dark cherry, berries, red licorice and wild herbs on the nose. Juicy and perfumed in the mouth, conveying an enticing hint of sweetness to the tangy black raspberry, spice, licorice and saline flavors. Finishes with firm, fine-grained tannins and noteworthy aromatic persistence, as well as a touch of roundness from the bit of new oak used for the first time for this cuvee. Previously, this wine has typically been more austere at this stage. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 94 (1/2015): This is beautifully elegant with its airy and cool yet markedly ripe nose of lavender, black raspberry, truffle and spiced plum scents. The sleek, well-delineated, intense and mineral-driven medium weight plus flavors possess fine mid-palate concentration before terminating in an attractively vibrant, harmonious and strikingly persistent finale. Lovely stuff that should age brilliantly well. Drink 2024+. WA 94-96 (12/2013): The 2012 Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru comes from the domain’s monopole: populated by one-third vines aged around 30-years and the remainder around 65-years old (see December issue for more details.) This year it sees 20% new oak. It has wonderful delineation on the nose with heightened mineralite from the limestone soils. The palate is medium-bodied with a precise opening. There is a wave of pure, clinically defined fresh raspberry and wild strawberry notes that dovetails into quite a stern, very linear finish. This is uncompromising at the moment, an aloof yet compelling Ruchottes-Chambertin that does not quite possess the completeness of say, Mugneret-Gibourg’s, but clearly as the substance to age extremely well. VM 93 (3/2015): Bright medium red. Superripe aromas of black and purple fruits, violet and licorice, complicated by leather and game nuances. Highly concentrated, very ripe and palate-staining, with the black fruit and menthol flavors lifted by a note of violet. Finishes with a suggestion of chocolatey ripeness and Outstanding breadth. Perhaps not as classy as its 2013 sibling but surprisingly easy to taste today. |

| BH 94 (1/2021): (1.06 ha; 20% new wood.) An absolutely gorgeous nose reflects cool and pure aromas of the essence of red berry liqueur, spice and soft floral scents. The lilting and mineral-driven middle weight flavors retain excellent delineation and a sophisticated mouthfeel while the sneaky long if decidedly firm finish possesses outstanding complexity. This powerful yet sophisticated and refined Zen-like effort is exceptionally promising. Drink 2036+. |
