| VM 93 (10/2025): The 2021 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a light nose with red berry fruit and light tertiary scents. Initially, it suggests a shortfall in complexity and vigour, yet after ten minutes, it coheres nicely and gains bags of charm. The palate is well balanced with fine tannins. Crisp and sapid, this offers tightly coiled red fruit that conveys a sense of energy. Bright and tensile on the finish, this is a Clos de Vougeot that I end up admiring. It has an engaging, quite exuberant bouquet of vibrant red fruit infused with hints of violet; the oak is deftly enmeshed. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a little tighter than the Fixin Village and with more backbone and volume toward the finish. Amélie Berthaut told me that she will probably bottle this later than the Fixin Village, and I suspect it will gain a little density by then. One to watch. (Drink between 2021-2029). Neal Martin. |

| VM 95 (10/2024): The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru left me perplexed out of barrel, but it proves its mettle in bottle. It has quite an intense bouquet with more black than red fruit, a little musky in quality, though it is well-defined. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. With a mixture of red and black fruit, brown spices and tobacco, this Clos de Vougeot is well-structured with a controlled, focused, sapid finish. Very fine. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting. VM 96 (10/2024): The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Les Petits-Monts 1er Cru is a wine that I never tasted out of barrel with Amélie Berthaut. It has more reduction on the nose and more of a marine influence here, turning to wilted rose petals with time - quite mercurial in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, a mixture of red and black fruit laced with white pepper and Italian herbs. It's nicely composed and harmonious towards the finish and is a tad more tannic than its peers, yet it is still an enjoyable wine that is probably in the for the long haul. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting. (Drink between 2027-2050). Neal Martin.
WA 92+ (1/2023): The 2020 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Petits Monts is also quite tightly wound, unfurling in the glass with notes of cherries and mulberries mingled with dark chocolate, spices and forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with racy acids and a structured, rather tensile wine, it represents quite a contrast with the suppler, more ethereal 2021. |
