BH 93 (1/2007): Cool and reserved with restrained aromas of dark berry fruits, particularly blueberry with spice and earth undertones give way to rich, full and sweet flavors that are muscular and taut though there is currently a lovely suppleness to the mid-palate, which causes this to seem unduly forward yet the finish reminds one that we're drinking Bonnes Mares as it simply explodes with huge amounts of dry extract and solid minerality. This seems to positively drench the palate in extract of dark berries yet this is dry and serious with plenty of structure and this will need 12 to 15 years to really show what the underlying material is capable of. This could very well surprise to the upside as the vibrancy and balance are very impressive. Drink 2016+. VM 92+ (4/2007): Good bright, dark red. Very pure aromas of briary blueberry and piquant herbs; slightly medicinal in its austerity. Dense, rich and sweet but tightly wound and austere, with dominant flavors of briary black fruits and earth. The most obviously tannic and medicinal of the estate's 2004s at this stage. Millet notes that de Vogue owns "an elegant part" of Bonnes-Mares. This will require extended aging. |

BH 95 (1/2008): (from a 2.7 ha parcel situated entirely in terres rouges soil in the south west portion of the vineyard). An even riper but not surmature nose that is less elegant and aromatically complex, at least at present, features brooding aromas of black and blue berry plus black cherry and violets nuanced by hints of spice and warm earth merge into big, powerful and well-muscled flavors underpinned by impressive mid-palate concentration and dense but fine tannins, all wrapped in a dazzling long finish that is perfectly balanced. This will clearly require time to unfold but the raw material is indisputably here and like the Musigny, this is built for the very long haul. Drink 2020+. WA 93-94 (4/2007): The 2005 Bonnes Mares marries black and red raspberries with fresh- sorbet- and liquer-like aspects alternating on a quite refined, polished, and (for this cru) seemingly less-savage than usual palate. Myriad herbs and spices mingle with the fruit and suggestions of wood smoke, horehound and sassafras emerge along with the sweet raspberries in a lingering finish that administers a considerable lashing of fine tannin and displays a sappy, resinous, faintly peppery cling. This is certainly the alter ego of this year’s cool, floral, tender Amoureuses. Final choices had been made as to those barrels from Musigny that would be culled to bottle as Chambolle 1er Cru but they represented several as yet unblended lots, which I was unable to taste. VM 93+ (4/2008): Deep red-ruby. Superripe aromas of black plum, blueberry, graphite, mocha and wild herbs; there's something almost Bordeaux-like about this. Then dense, sweet and powerful, with a seamless, fine-grained texture and a richness verging on chocolatey. Less perfumed than the Chambolle cuvees, but with no shortage of sap. Most impressive today on the back end, finishing with substantial dusty tannins and rising flavors of plum, menthol and chocolate. This muscular and very young wine will be long-lived. |

BH 94 (1/2009): ( from a 2.7 ha parcel situated entirely in terres rouges soil in the south west portion of the vineyard). This too is quite restrained with almost exclusively red berry fruit and intense floral aromas that are high-toned and pure while complementing the supple, textured, dusty and extremely precise flavors that exude a quiet power on the brooding and linear finish that delivers Outstanding length. This will require every bit of a decade to resolve the very firm structure. This is less elegant than the 1er but more powerful and the distinguishing character of the '06 Bonnes Mares is the serenity that it projects. I thought that it would be good but this knocks on the door of being genuinely great. Drink 2018+. WA 94 (12/2009): Mint, concentrated red and black fruits, smoked meat, and black pepper pungently scent the De Vogue 2006 Bonnes Mares. These migrate with almost implosive intensity to a palate lushly textured though finely tannic and almost implacably dense yet shot through with electric energy. Here are both the caressing and invigorating aspects at once present in so many of the best 2006s, each accentuated. Like so many young wines of its appellation, this is relatively backward and slightly unruly, but the longer the wine takes on air the more both its senses of richness and energy are enhanced. I would give this at least 3-4 years in bottle and anticipate at least 10-12 years of riveting performance. VM 93 (4/2009): Deep, bright red. Blueberry, licorice, violet, menthol and fresh herbs on the nose, with a medicinal reserve. The rather backward medicinal character follows through on the palate, but there's also a deeply seductive, succulent quality to this grand cru's very fresh dark fruit and spice flavors. The building tannins are supported by the wine's lush middle palate. Finishes fresh, stylish and long. |

WA 94 (6/2010): De Vogue’s 2007 Bonnes Mares calls to mind sweet-tart black raspberry candies and herbal lozenges, along with notes of brown spices and smoky black tea. Rich, sedate, and provocatively sweet and perfumed, this manages simultaneously to preserve a saline savor and suggestion of lobster shell reduction that precludes anyone calling it a “fruit bomb." The smoky and - for lack of a better covering term - “mineral" elements accompany this Bonnes Mares’ soothing finish all the way to its distant end. No doubt there is at least a decade’s worth of seduction and intrigue on hand, but here too, I would not hesitate to relish them significantly sooner. VM 93 (4/2010): Very good bright red. Complex but youthfully restrained nose hints at dark raspberry, mocha, herbs and smoke. Quite suave for young Bonnes-Mares, with a slightly medicinal quality to the candied fruit and spice flavors. This has the firm acidity of hard candy and seems more red fruit than usual for this cuvee The tannins arrive late, allowing the finish to expand and linger. This is a lovely example of its vintage. BH 93 (1/2010): (from a 2.7 ha parcel situated entirely in terres rouges soil in the south west portion of the vineyard). A surprisingly expressive nose displays a broad panoply of ripe floral and fruit aromas that include red raspberry, cherry, plum, violet and rose surrounded by warm soil tones that can also be found on the powerful and tautly muscled large scaled flavors blessed with ample underlying reserves of dry extract that render the relatively refined tannins invisible at present on the explosive and exceptionally deep finish where notes of citrus and floral resurface. A seriously impressive wine of Zen-like harmony and poise. Drink 2019+. |

VM 95 (5/2011): The 2008 Bonnes Mares is totally classy and elegant. It shows gorgeous inner liqueur-like sweetness, expressive aromatics and a rich, textured finish that is a marvel to behold. The sheer depth, density and incisiveness of the fruit is fabulous. Expressive floral notes round out the finish. This is very much an understated Bonnes Mares from de Vogüe. Antonio Galloni. Anticipated maturity: 2023-2048. BH 94 (1/2011): A more deeply pitched nose of cool and reserved red and black cherry aromas that are quite fresh and pure and are laced more with warm earth than stone though both are present. The focused and detailed broad-shouldered flavors are blessed with ample dry extract that cuts a bit of the austerity on the linear, serious, mouth coating and hugely long finish. As is often the case, this is still quite primary and will need plenty of time to unwind. Drink: 2023+ VM 93 (4/2011): Deep red. Briary raspberry, blueberry, mocha and menthol on the nose, lifted by peppery spices; a real essence of this grand cru. Then creamier and larger-scaled than the Chambolle premier cru, with the sweet berry fruit flavors enlivened by the peppery component and savory soil tones on the back. This really tickles the taste buds on the broad, firmly tannic, very long finish. Steph |

| BH 92 (1/2014): A strikingly well-layered nose displays notes of dark berry fruit, flowers, spice and earth scents. There is fine richness to the round and again quite voluminous middle weight plus flavors that possess excellent mid-palate concentration, all wrapped in muscular finish that displays excellent persistence. This is relatively refined in the context of what is typically a robust appellation thanks to the very fine grain of the supporting structure. Drink 2026+. |

BH 95 (1/2015): (from a 2.67 ha parcel situated entirely in terres rouges soil in the south-west portion of the vineyard.) Deep ruby. This is also quite floral with excellent ripeness but also fine freshness to the plum, black cherry, cassis and blueberry aromas. The supple but tautly muscular medium weight plus flavors possess a suave mouth feel thanks to the abundant dry extract that both coats the palate and buffers the very firm tannic spine on the highly persistent and imposingly powerful finish. Here too plenty of patience will be required. Drink 2027+. VM 94+ (3/2015): Dark, bright red. Red raspberry, licorice and menthol on the nose, complicated by notes of bitter chocolate and spices. Large-scaled and broad but less forthcoming today than the Chambolle 1er Cru, with dark raspberry, cherry and spice flavors showing a medicinal reserve and a touch of wildness. Shades toward blacker fruits on the dense, sappy back end, which features substantial ripe tannins and strong saline minerality. This very backward, powerful wine will need a long time to fully express itself. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 92-94 (1/2019): The 2017 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a not dissimilar bouquet to the Les Amoureuses, though here there is slightly more red fruit and perhaps a heightened sense of Pinote. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly grippy tannin, good backbone (as usual) and a saline influence that becomes more accentuated toward the fresh finish. This feels a little tight-lipped at the moment compared to others tasted from barrel, but it also feels persistent and, for want of a better word, enigmatic. Neal Martin. BH 91-94 (1/2019): (from a 2.67 ha parcel situated entirely in terres rouges soil in the south-west portion of the vineyard.) A very ripe yet agreeably fresh nose reflects notes of blue berry, plum liqueur and violet that are cut with spice and earth hints. The exceptionally rich and impressively full-bodied flavors evidence a taut muscularity, all wrapped in an overtly powerful and lingering finish that is naturally sweet. As one would reasonably expect this is quite firm but the 2017 version appears to be a bit less structured than it usually is. Drink 2029+. |

| BH 93-95 (1/2021): (from a 2.67 ha parcel situated entirely in terres rouges soil in the far southern portion of the vineyard.) A riper and more restrained nose requires some swirling to reveal its aromas of plum liqueur, blue berry, earth and a more restricted range of spice elements. The bigger and richer flavors possess an opulent richness and a velvety texture that coats the palate and enrobes the firmer tannic spine shaping the powerful, tautly muscular and strikingly persistent finale. This offers a completely different expression compared to the Amoureuses but one that is equally interesting. This too possesses superb development potential though patience definitely advised. VM 92-94 (1/2023): The 2021 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, their only vineyard on the north side of Chambolle, includes around 50% whole bunches this year. The stems are discretely enmeshed, present, but allow the fruit and terroir to speak. I admire the freshness and joie-de-vivre here. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiselled tannins, vivid black cherry fruit laced with orange zest/blood orange towards its energetic finish. Bon vin. Neal Martin. BH 91-94 (1/2023): A much more deeply pitched and more floral-suffused nose speaks mostly of blue berries, anise and a subtle touch of earth. I very much like the seductive mid-palate texture of the vibrant medium weight flavors that display excellent depth and persistence on the youthfully austere bitter pit fruit-inflected finish. This is perhaps on the lighter side in the context of what is typical for Bonnes Mares, but it possess excellent flavor authority and fine length Drink 2033+. |

WA 92 (5/2011): The 2008 Chambolle-Musigny is finessed and haunting. This shows tons of harmony in its crushed flowers, hard candy and berries, all of which flow gracefully towards the saline, mineral-drenched finish. With time in the glass the layers of fruit flesh out with notable beauty and elegance. The Chambolle is a classic, translucent wine in 2008, and will delight readers who prefer the nuanced side of Burgundy. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2028. VM 90 (4/2011): Good bright medium red. Wild raspberry, spicy oak and a touch of vanilla on the nose. Juicy, spicy and fruity but not a fleshy style, with the classic citrus zest lift of a cooler vintage. This precise, minerally wine shows lovely limestone energy and transparency to soil. Very different in style from the creamier 2009 here. BH 90 (1/2011): (from vines in the southwest portion of the village and includes some declassified 1ers from Les Baudes and Fuees). A strikingly fresh and high-toned nose of ultra pure and ripe red and blue pinot fruit aromas merges gracefully into precise and chiseled middle weight flavors that display a fine minerality on the focused, racy, balanced and lingering finish. This is a classically styled villages that offers excellent quality. Drink 2016+. Outstanding! |

BH 92 (1/2010): (all from younger vines Musigny). An expressive and relatively high-toned red and blue berry fruit nose mixed with subtle spice and floral notes offers a clear step up in aromatic complexity while introducing rich, naturally sweet, intense and sappy flavors that deliver impressive precision and a particularly seductive mouth feel as there is a velvety quality to the beautifully long, linear and balanced finish. This is not a dramatic wine in the manner of the two that follow but it quietly delivers excellent quality. Drink 2018+. Oustanding! WA 92 (6/2010): Cocoa powder-dusted ripe black raspberry mingles with dark forest floor elements; roasted, subtly caramelized potato skins; and bloody red meat in the fascinating de Vogue 2007 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru. Caressing, rounded richness and sheer generosity characteristic for the entire vintage collection at this address by no means precludes admirable buoyancy and intriguing as well as enticing persistence that compels the next sniff and sip. This should be well worth following for at least 6-8 years, and will in that course of time doubtless more obviously distance itself from the corresponding village-level bottling. But while I may underestimate its longevity, it would I think be a shame if one waited to embrace this Pinot until the youthful bloom was not longer in its cheeks. Unfortunately - a not uncommon circumstance at this address - I was unable to taste the rare de Vogue Les Amoureuses of the vintage. VM 91 (4/2010): (made from the young vines of Musigny; the village wine was bottled in January of 2009 while the rest of de Vogue's 2007s were bottled three months later) Bright red. Darker and muskier on the nose than the Chambolle villages, hinting at blueberry, wild herbs and menthol. Then silky and intense, with more energy and freshness than the village offering. Also more tannic and closed on the back but finishes with lovely cut and lingering blackberry and cassis perfume. I like the wildness here. A very serious wine for aging. |

BH 93 (1/2012): (all from younger vines Musigny). A similar but slightly riper and much spicier nose includes blue berry and plum nuances that precede the more obviously mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors that brim with dry extract. The extremely pure and utterly delicious finish is shaped by the dense but fine tannins that are given added energy by the perfectly integrated acid spine. This is a seriously lovely effort. Drink 2021+. Outstanding! WA 92 (4/2012): The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru is a big step up from the Chambolle villages in this vintage. Bright red berries, flowers and spices are supported by vibrant layers of underlying minerality. I very much like the energy and focus here. The wine turns darker and richer with time in the glass. Hints of plum and black cherry linger on the structured finish. This is a 2009 that will need at least a few more years in bottle. The 1er Cru is made from young vines in Musigny. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2034. VM 90+ (4/2012): (from the estate's younger vines in Musigny): Bright, deep, fresh red. Very ripe aromas of black cherry, blackberry, melted licorice, roasted herbs and spices. Silky-sweet and highly concentrated, with a creamy texture supported by a solid tannic structure. The wine's lush blackberry, currant and exotic spice flavors gained in freshness with air. Finishes broad and classically dry. |

WA 94 (2/2012): The 2010 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru opens with an explosive bouquet laced with dark red fruit, mint, flowers and graphite. Cool, mineral notes are woven throughout, giving the wine its sense of urgency. A final blast of plums and black cherries informs the powerful, structured finish. This is an impressive showing. The 1er Cru is made from young vines in Musigny. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2030. BH 93 (1/2013): (all from younger vines Musigny). This is compositionally similar to the villages but here there is notably better complexity and much more spice to the superbly fresh red and blue pinot fruit and kirsch scents. The supple, pure and attractively energetic flavors possess very solid mid-palate density yet the mouth feel is really quite lacy while terminating in a harmonious, dusty and hugely persistent finish that displays a hint of citrus. This strongly mineral-driven effort is wonderfully poised, indeed it's Zen-like. In short, this is terrific. Drink 2022+. VM 93 (4/2013): Bright full red. Very reticent but pure aromas of currant, raspberry, pomegranate, menthol and fresh spices; more red than black and a touch medicinal. Densely packed and saline, with knockout inner-mouth perfume of raspberry, pomegranate and crushed stone. Like a junior, and much more accessible, version of Musigny. Impressive energy and rising salty minerality on the very long finish. A great vintage for this bottling. |

| BH 93 (1/2021): Deep ruby color. A beautifully broad-ranging nose reflects liqueur-like notes of black raspberry, cassis, exotic tea, violet and a hint of sandalwood. Here too the opulent medium weight flavors possess a notably sleek mouthfeel along with outstanding intensity and detail, all wrapped in a dusty, serious and youthfully austere finish. This powerful but balanced effort is even firmer and is a wine that will need at least 6 to 8 years to be approachable. |

VM 97 (3/2018): (tasted from a 375-milliter bottle): Very bright red with ruby tones; looks like a young wine. Deep, dark red and black fruit aromas are complicated by cinnamon, black pepper, roast coffee and a hint of truffley underbrush. Wonderfully rich but classy and reserved, and not a bit heavy. Utterly silky, plush, energetic wine with a relaxed quality to its lively dark fruit and dark chocolate flavors. Finishes classically dry, with beautifully buffered tannins and captivating building sweetness. Amazingly, this 375-milliliter bottle seems still short of its peak, so I would imagine that well-stored 750s still need time. I'd guess 2022-2042 for 750s. Stephen Tanzer. BH 94 (1/2002): In contrast to the general style of the vintage, this is aromatically austere though with coaxing, reveals wonderfully complex aromas of a simply incredible array of black fruits, earth, spice, crushed herbs and notes of chocolate with flavors that are huge but fine, powerful but subtle and rich yet detailed with a stupendously long finish that offers intense minerality. This is genuinely stunning juice and not to be missed. Drink 2010-2025. |

BH 93 (10/2005): Extravagant, very ripe spice aromas explode from the glass with remarkable complexity that frame superbly elegant, gorgeously textured flavors that are intense and vibrant. This is really quite powerful for the vintage and incredibly long yet remains classy and fine. It is not especially big or dense as de Vogüe Musigny goes but is tautly muscular and defined. Extremely impressive for the vintage. Drink 2010+. WA 93 (6/2003): There is an enthralling sappy richness to the floral and blackberry-scented 2000 Musigny. Supremely elegant, it is not quite as dense as the 2001 yet reveals Outstanding depth, purity, and concentration. Lush, stony red and black fruits are interspersed with violets and tangy raspberries in its exceptionally long, expressive, plump character. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2012. VM 92+ (4/2003): Saturated dark red. Deep, nuanced nose combines dark fruits, minerals and underbrush. Sweet and highly concentrated but tight and backward, even a bit sullen today; fruit and stone flavors are quite primary for the vintage. Finishes with substantial broad tannins and very good grip. May ultimately merit an even higher rating. |

BH 96 (10/2005): One of the finest wines of the vintage, this is simply a spectacular effort that has captured every bit of the potential it originally displayed in cask. Restrained and backward nose of a fantastically complex mix of blackberries, spice, cedar, soy, anise and dried herbs followed by full-bodied, multi-layered flavors of amazing length. Opulent and lavish yet all remains exquisitely balanced and this is astonishingly precise. A real stunner of a wine that is as classy and graceful as they come. As good and classy as the '02 if not quite as structured. WA 94-96 (6/2003): Sumptuous aromas of violets, blackberries, and bilberries explode from the medium to dark ruby-colored 2001 Musigny. A wine of amazing purity and elegance, it reverberates on the palate revealing broad layers of floral dark fruit flavors. Lush yet superbly delineated, this medium-bodied effort is expressive, complex, and dignified. Its prolonged, succulent finish exhibits waves of raspberry fruit and loads of ripe, supple tannin. One of the stars of the vintage, it will be at its peak of maturity between 2006 and 2015. VM 95+ (4/2004): Deep red. Deep, reserved but thoroughly ripe nose hints at blueberry, cherry, blood orange, spices and minerals. Wonderfully sweet and silky but with a firm mineral spine giving shape and grip to the flavors. Extremely precise, classy, young Musigny, finishing with strong, broad, thoroughly ripe tannins and superb sweetness. Millet then told me this wine had been aerated for an hour before we tasted it from a decanter; he opened a new bottle and the second sample was even sweeter, more pliant and longer. The decanted bottle was distinctly closed by comparison. |

WA 98 (8/2005): Unquestionably one of the glories of the vintage, the 2003 Musigny Vieilles Vignes brings forth a highly boisterous nose of spices, violets, roses, plums, blueberries, and black cherries. Deep, powerful, graceful, concentrated, and sensually textured, it slathers the mouth with plums, blueberries, and cherries. Notes of mocha are intermingled with licorice in its exquisitely long finish. This noble wine is crammed with tannin, yet it is sweet and ripe. Projected maturity: 2010-2025+. VM 93 (4/2006): Medium red-ruby. The purest of these three 2003s today on the nose: blackberry, black raspberry, minerals and mint. Huge and broad in the mouth, with a flavor of slightly jammy blackcurrant. Not at all flat, but Millet notes that the acidity here is a bit lower than that of the 1990 Musigny. Finishes with a major load of late-arriving tannins. BH 93 (1/2006): (only 14 barrels were made instead of the usual 30 to 35). Very deep ruby but not black or opaque. An exceptionally ripe nose of plum jam, cassis and blackberry is complemented by a superb range of spices, including clove, anise and cinnamon plus attractive herbal undertones. The incredibly sappy and powerful medium full flavors are sweet and supple yet there is a very firm tannic spine buried beneath the mountain of dry extract. Despite the very high degree of ripeness, this is quite fresh for the vintage with a chewy but mouth coating and palate staining finish that goes on and on. In short, this is an opulent Musigny with superb underlying material and clearly at another level compared to the other wines in the range. Drink 2018+. |

BH 96 (1/2007): This is also very cool and even more reserved at present, revealing only reluctant glimpses of very ripe and ultra spicy red and black berry fruit notes that are very pinot in character. The rich, full and powerful flavors are sweet, supple and utterly classy and the intensity this wine displays is seriously impressive and the superbly long and strikingly precise finish is crystalline in its purity and exactness. There is a rigorous element here that suggests this will require the better part of 15 years to be at its best but when it gets there, this is going to be a thrill ride. Readers know that I am not given to undue hyperbole but I love this style of wine as it's at once pure, understated, graceful and utterly composed. Drink 2019+. VM 95+ (4/2007): Good deep red. Ineffable aromas of raspberry, crushed stone and flowers. Like liquid silk on entry, then quite tightly wound in the middle, offering great purity and nerve but hiding more than it's showing in the way of flavor today. This has a nearly frightful intensity and superb stony persistence. Due to hail in late August, the yield here was just 20 hectoliters per hectare, compared to 25 in 2005, according to Millet. A highlight of the vintage. When I asked Millet to compare his 2004s to his 2001s, he told me that the acidity in the spine of the 2004s is barely tasteable, as the minerality of the wine dominates. "In comparison, the 2001s are gaining in sensuality and elegance," he said. "But their fresh fruit flavors are still fighting their acidity." |

BH 99 (1/2008): Prepare to be transported. A positively brilliant nose of violet and rose petal shines against a background of intensely spiced extravagant red and black pinot fruit nuanced by hints of earth and stone and this minerality continues onto the surprisingly supple flavors that convey a remarkable sense of energy and power on the almost unbelievably intense, focused and structured finish that seems to go on and on without end. And the '05 VV has what all truly great burgundies have which is that extra dimension of power without weight as this carries terrific punch and power yet delivers that explosiveness with impeccable class and grace. While I am duly mindful of the many legendary wines this domaine has produced (see the database for all vintages reviewed dating to 1919), the 2005 could very well join the list of the all time greats, there is really that much potential here. Whether it will ultimately transcend the heights achieved by the 1919 or the 1949 (among many others) remains an open question, I have zero doubt that 2005 will be a genuinely great vintage for this wine. Brilliance personified and absolutely a 'wow' wine, in fact, this merits a double 'wow'. WA 96-98 (4/2007): My notes on the 2005 Musigny Vieilles Vignes represent a composite impression from a selection of barrels. There can be little question that this deep, dark wine displays its class of origin, indeed a class of its own in this year’s collection. Fresh black raspberry, pomegranate, blackberry, and iris dominate the nose and stain the palate. A wealth of spice, mineral, chalky and bitter-sweet floral nuances persistently wreath the fruit at all stages. This shows lovely creaminess of texture in counterpoint to the persistent freshness of fruit. The intensely rich yet refreshing palate saturation and tenacious cling exhibited auger well for extended cellaring yet don’t detract from an impression of utmost elegance and refinement. The domaine will begin bottling the wines in spring and all will, as usual, receive “the minimum, gentlest possible" filtration. Francois Millet notes that skin-to-juice ratios this year were as formidably high as those of 2003, yet thanks to relatively mild temperatures, the fruit retained what he terms a “sorbet-like presentation." |

BH 96 (1/2009): This is also extremely floral with a reserved nose that is an airy, spicy and ripe melange of red and blue pinot fruit that displays really lovely violet and rose petal notes that are picked up by the minerally, intense and harmonious flavors that are beautifully proportioned and are blessed with ample amounts of dry extract on the essence of pinot and explosive, energetic and hugely long yet incredible precise finish that is also built on a base of firm minerality. This is almost exotic in character yet everything is in beautiful concordance. In a word, great. Drink 2021+. WA 96 (12/2009): Francois Millet thinks that there is considerable latent structure as well as aging potential in all of the De Vogue 2006s, and with the 2006 Musigny Vieilles Vignes both are evident. Diverse jellied berries, citrus oils, and floral perfumes indeed seductively fill the nose, and then flood a seamlessly refined palate. At the same time, a sense of chalky and saline minerality as well as marrowy meatiness mount into the finish, taking on further prominence as the wine opens to the air. On the one hand you feel as though you are watching the wafting of clouds of fruit and perfume; on the other the motion of tectonic plates beneath your palate. This superb Musigny is going to be a great source of metaphors over the next 15 or more years, and one could do worse than start with the familiar iron fist wrapped in velvet, because it fits this wine like a glove. VM 95+ (4/2009): Deep, bright red. Offers an extra dimension on the nose, with captivating sappy red fruits, minerals, blood orange, clove, menthol and bitter chocolate. Enters the mouth thick and opulent, then wonderfully dense and seamless in the middle, with compelling sweetness and piquant minerality. The back half of the wine shows the powerful, structured side of the vintage, finishing with major tannins and an impression of brooding energy. This may well merit a higher score with a decade or so of bottle aging. |

BH 95 (1/2010): The step up in class is unmistakable with gorgeously complex, even kaleidoscopic and superbly elegant red, black and violet aromas trimmed with a dazzling array of spices, earth and a hint of smoke that adds unmistakable luster to the round, intense, muscular and exceptionally stylish broad-scaled flavors that possess excellent power and a building intensity that develops from the mid-palate to the explosive yet seductive finish. I really like the purity of expression here on the sappy and mineral-infused finish that has a dusty quality from all of the dry extract that coats the firm tannins. This is a big '07 built on a base of firm minerality but it remains impeccably well balanced and should live for decades so patience is definitely a virtue if you are a potential buyer. Drink 2027+. VM 95+ (3/2010): Bright, deep red. Sappy, deep nose offers blackberry, raspberry, menthol and powerful minerality for the year, with a medicinal reserve conveying the impression of a hidden dimension. Wonderfully dense, sappy and sweet, with palate-saturating chewy extract and plenty of material in reserve. The medicinal aspect to the wine's powerful fruit and spice flavors suggest it will need a minimum of 12 years in the cellar. Finishes with Outstanding breadth and explosive length. WA 95 (6/2010): Smoked meat and salt-, kelp-, and iodine-laced maritime mineral overlays to the sweetly ripe berry and pit fruit concentrate of de Vogue’s 2007 Musigny Vieilles Vignes make for a Pinot as intriguing as it is eager to caress and please. Plush, polished, and possessed of formidable sheer sap, it displays an energy and interplay seldom revealed in this vintage. A mineral savor of crustacean shell reduction keeps pace with nearly candied sweetness of berry fruit – and keeps you salivating uncontrollably – all the way to a distant finishing line. |

WA 97 (5/2011): The 2008 Musigny Vieilles Vignes is a wine I could smell all day. The explosive bouquet literally jumps from the glass, followed by deep, beautifully delineated layers of fruit. This shows terrific concentration and depth, dazzling finesse, and a nicely pointed, direct finish. It is an eternal wine. Anticipated maturity: 2023-2048. BH 96 (1/2011): This is also quite reserved at present with an elegant, airy, cool and pure nose that is kaleidoscopically complex as it offers red currant, plum, black cherry and a panoply of floral and spice notes, in particular violet and anise, before marrying seamlessly into mineral-driven and alluring big-bodied flavors that explode on the powerful and almost painfully intense finish that delivers genuinely stunning length. I love the way Musigny can so effortlessly combine a silky palate impression with serious muscle. This should be quite impressive in time though note that it will need a minimum of 18 to 25 years of cellar time. Drink 2028+. Don't miss! VM 95+ (4/2011): (bottled in April of 2010): Good full medium red. Pungent aromas of wild red berries and crushed stone complicated by mint and pepper. Juicy and extremely intense but youthfully imploded today, showing a medicinal reserve and a crystallized quality to its sharply delineated fruit and mineral flavors. Finishes with serious tannic spine, but the wine's energy and subtle building perfume are utterly captivating. Almost painful today but showed building fruit even in the brief time I had it in my glass. Enologist Francois Millet believes that the freshness of the 2008s "will collapse if the wines are served too warm" as the syrupy fruit character of the vintage is needed to balance its brisk acidity. He suggested a serving temperature of under 60 degrees. |

WA 97 (4/2012): The 2009 Musigny Vieilles Vignes fleshes out beautifully with endless layers of fruit that caress the palate in stunning style. Sweet floral notes meld into expressive dark red fruit in this mysterious, evocative Burgundy. There is a weightless intensity to the Musigny that is achingly gorgeous. BH 96 (1/2012): A fantastically complex nose offers up aromas of rose petals, violets, mint, cassis, black berry and a plethora of spice nuances that continue onto the intense and remarkably powerful imposingly constructed flavors that are blessed with buckets of dry extract that render the presently rigid tannic spine almost invisible on the impeccably and palate staining finish that seems to persist without end. As was the case from cask, I could still taste this several hours later and if given sufficient cellar time, this should be a very fine vintage for this storied wine. Drink 2029+. VM 95+ (4/2012): Good bright, deep red. Raspberry liqueur, crushed rock and vanillin oak on the suave, subdued nose; shows the greatest lift of these 2009s. Superconcentrated and creamy but light on its feet, displaying terrific energy and sappiness for 2009. Gained in verve with aeration, with high-pitched, tangy flavors of raspberry, pomegranate, flowers and minerals spreading out to saturate the mouth. With its finishing perfume and taste of limestone, this really transcends the vintage. |

VM 95+ (4/2014): Deep, dark red. An elixir of dark berries on the nose, with complicating notes of crushed stone, menthol and flowers. Thick but weightless and youthfully imploded, with an element of spicy acidity giving Outstanding cut and primary character to the blackberry and blueberry fruit flavors. Finishes dense and strong, with powerful tannic support and late hints of espresso and bitter chocolate. Fully ripe in the context of the vintage, and built for an extended evolution in bottle. BH 94 (1/2014): A remarkably attractively cool and restrained nose of various red berries, spice and a beautiful array of floral elements complements well the rich and equally cool mineral-tinged big-bodied and overtly muscular flavors. There is a really lovely sense of underlying tension on the clean and pure finish that delivers strikingly good length. This intensely mineral-driven effort is also clean and firm but with slightly better phenolic maturity to the supporting structural elements which should allow this beauty to age successfully for many years to come. Drink 2029+. WA 92 (8/2013): The 2011 Musigny Vieille Vignes Grand Cru was picked around mid-harvest during the first week of September. It has a more floral bouquet compared to the Bonnes-Mares with scents of dried rose petals and a touch of violet infusing the dark cherry and pomegranate fruit profile. The palate is supple in texture, lithe in the mouth with fine tannins, much more feminine than the Bonnes-Mares (usually I find it the other way round.) The mouth is tingling with salted licorice and white pepper on the aftertaste. Impressive for sure, but I need it to show a bit of soul. Drink 2015-2025. |

VM 97+ (4/2013): (bottled in March of 2012; this and the Bonnes-Mares were aged in 35% new oak): Deep, bright red-ruby. Brilliantly pure aromas of black raspberry, cherry and crushed limestone. Sharply chiseled, sappy and weightless in the mouth, with uncanny limestone cut to the flavors of raspberry, flowers and wild herbs. Spreads out insidiously to saturate and perfume the palate. Judging from this wine's tactile, bracing finish, endless perfume and firm tannic spine, it should gain in nuance for two or three decades in a cool cellar. WA 96-98 (12/2013): The 2012 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is initially mild-mannered on the nose, unassuming at first but unfolding with each swirl of the glass to reveal scent of dark cherries, Dorset plum, blueberry and licorice. But it is very contained like the Bonnes-Mares, the bouquet strongly advising to return in a decade’s time. The palate is very well balanced with filigree tannins, brambly red berry fruit and a marine-influence from start to finish – hints of brine and seaweed; shucked oyster shell on the finish. This is a very accomplished, fascinating Musigny from de Vogue. BH 94-97 (1/2014): A gorgeously spicy nose is comprised of liqueur-like dark berry fruit scents that also display plenty of floral influence that includes notes of lavender, violet and, somewhat curiously, honeysuckle. There is Outstanding concentration and punch to the seductively textured and marvelously intense big-bodied flavors that are borderline robust as the supporting tannins are dense but refined. I really like the Zen-like sense of harmony to the explosively long finish that really stains the palate. In a word, terrific. Drink 2027+. Don't miss! |

VM 96+ (3/2016): Very dark bright red. Great purity and lift to the aromas of black cherry, violet, graphite, bitter chocolate and minerals. Showing less obvious density today than the Bonnes-Mares but this is extremely tight and unevolved, with its saline crushed stone and mineral elements currently dominating its underlying fruit. The yield was just 20 hectoliters per hectare, due in large part to millerandage, but this extremely imploded Musigny is showing little of the early sweetness one might expect from tiny berries. Finishes with outstanding flavor authority, length and grip. This wine should go on for decades. Stephen Tanzer. BH 96 (1/2016): (from an incredible 6.46 ha parcel, which doesn't include the .67 ha parcel planted to chardonnay.) This is also quite aromatically restrained with its cool, airy and extraordinarily complex nose that features notes of red raspberry, black cherry, violet, rose petal, Asian-style spices, in particular cinnamon and anise plus a hint of orange pekoe tea. There is superb concentration to the intensely stony and well-delineated broad-shouldered flavors that also brim with palate soaking dry extract that helps to buffer that imposingly powerful, tautly muscular and massively long and youthfully austere finish. This is breathtaking in just how much power and intensity it packs yet there isn't a hair out of place. In a word, 'wow'! Drink 2033+. |

VM 95+ (3/2017): Bright, dark red. Knockout nose offers most of the Musigny food groups: raspberry, cherry, earth, wild herbs, flowers and minerals, plus a leathery nuance. Pungent and extremely intense but utterly weightless owing to its near-perfect balance of sweetness and juiciness. Best today on the explosive, building back end, which offers a powerfully chewy, sappy impression but no rough edges. Winemaker François Millet suggests waiting at least 10 to 15 years. Stephen Tanzer. BH 95 (1/2017): (from an incredible 6.46 ha parcel, which doesn't include the .67 ha parcel planted to chardonnay.) While highly complex this is cool to the point of only grudgingly revealing a strikingly layered combination of violets, rose petals, sandalwood, anise, clove, plum and dark currant scents. This is a big and overtly muscular wine with broad-shouldered and admirably concentrated flavors yet for all of the impressive size, weight and volume, the massively long finish is serene, even Zen-like. 2014 is a relatively seductive and forward vintage for this storied wine, and I appreciate that calling a wine "forward" when it will likely need 20 years to fully mature is a relative concept! BH 95-98 (1/2017): (from an incredible 6.46 ha parcel, which doesn't include the .67 ha parcel planted to chardonnay.) Like the Amoureuses this too is kaleidoscopically spicy with its broad-ranging nose of red cherry, cassis, plum, violet, Asian-style tea, sandalwood and hoisin. The velvety and mouth coating imposingly-scaled and intense mineral-driven flavors are also blessed with seemingly endless reserves of dry extract that coat the palate on the highly seductive finish that delivers fantastically good length on the youthfully austere, backward and immaculately well-balanced finale. This too is going to require a very long snooze in a very cool cellar but it should be a remarkable Musigny when it emerges. Drink 2035+. Don't miss! VM 94-97 (1/2017): Bright ruby-red. Aromas of blackberry, black raspberry and bitter chocolate are lifted by the most pungent minerality of this range. Combines compelling sweetness and density, but with a finesse of texture that gives this wine an improbably light touch. Remarkably dense but reserved wine, with purple berry liqueur and mineral flavors conveying terrific lift. Easily the best of these 2015s, finishing with a juicy whiplash of flavor. Here the tannins arrive very late and are perfectly integrated with the wine's fruit and soil elements. Still, this vibrant wine is extremely backward and unevolved in the early going and will require long aging. Winemaker François Millet expects to do a very light fining at the bottling. Stephen Tanzer. WA 95-97 (12/2016): The 2015 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is initially more introspective compared to the Bonnes-Mares. Predominantly black fruit here with blueberry developing in the glass, there is a slight earthiness in character that shimmies towards floral scents as it opens. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin and more salinity than then Bonnes Mares or the Chambolle-Musigny les Amoureuses. It feels crunchy and fresh in the mouth with plenty of blueberry and blackberry towards the long and persistent finish. This is an Outstanding Musigny Vieilles Vignes of substance that will age over 30-40 years. |

VM 94-96 (1/2019): The 2017 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru has a very expressive, complex bouquet, the melange of red, blue and black fruit making it difficult to identify a single dominant color. Blueberry, wild strawberry and black currant intermingle, and hints of sea spray and touches of orange blossom develop with time. The harmonious, silky palate is almost like a Romanee-Saint-Vivant in texture, offering great depth and an energetic, peppery finish that lingers long in the mouth. A divine Musigny that will deserve some bottle age. Neal Martin. BH 93-96 (1/2019): (from an incredible 6.46 ha parcel, which doesn't include the .67 ha section planted to chardonnay.) An openly exotic nose offers glimpses of black cherry liqueur, ginger, Asian-style tea, sandalwood and orange peel. The tighter and much more mineral-driven big-bodied flavors also possess evident muscle on the powerful and dense yet beautifully refined finish that goes on and on. This is also a bit less structured though with that said, this is going to need at least 15 years to reach its apogee. In a word, terrific. Drink 2032+. Don't miss! |

BH 97 (1/2021): A ripe and super-fresh nose offers up notes of black raspberry, plum liqueur, Asian-style tea and a whiff of incense. The racy, intense and mineral-driven big-bodied flavors retain outstanding delineation as well as an abundance of palate soaking dry extract before delivering stunningly good length where an interesting hint of citrus character in the form of mandarin orange appears. This incredibly powerful effort is both classy and highly complex and like the Bonnes Mares, is a wine that will live for decades. With that said, it's not so backward and compact to preclude it being approachable after only 10 to 12 years. A knockout by any standard. VM 92 (11/2022): The 2018 Musigny Grand Cru is bold and assertive on the nose with darker fruit than Mugnier's Musigny: dense and focused, fine delineation yet just missing the little complexity. The palate is framed by thickset, bold and saturated tannins, a mixture of red and blue fruit, grippy and assertive. There is a heaviness in this Musigny not apparent in three others tasted alongside, a bit burly and demonstrative. But you have to ask, where is the charm. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting. Neal Martin. |

This too is quite aromatically restrained though aggressive swirling does eventually coax the pure and elegant aromas to emerge and when they do, they are almost a hypothetical blend of the Amoureuses and the Bonnes Mares. VM 95-97 (1/2023): The 2021 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru underwent a picked piecemeal from the 30 different plots to find the best order that actually was linked to vine age. It has a gorgeous bouquet with brambly red fruit, loam, blood oranges and subtle graphite aromas. Superb delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, fresh citrus like acidity, tensile and focused. This is a very classic, mineral-driven Musigny with surfeit of salinity that gets the saliva flowing on the finish. So bright on the finish. Neal Martin. BH 92-95 (1/2023): This is compositionally similar to the Chambolle "1er", but the brooding nose only grudgingly displays both notably better complexity and more floral nuances as well a background hint of kirsch. As is always the case, there is markedly more size, weight and density to the bigger-bodied and notably more powerful flavors that conclude in a very backward, compact and even more mineral-driven finish. This is still in need of additional élevage, but it should ultimately be quite impressive. Drink 2036+. |

| BH 94-97 (1/2024): This is aromatically quite similar to the 1er except that it is notably more restrained and requires considerable swirling to coax the nose to reveal its nuances. On the palate though there is noticeably more size, weight and mid-palate density thanks to the abundant sap that imparts a highly seductive mouthfeel while also buffering the firmer, though just as fine, tannic structure shaping the hugely long, youthfully austere and decidedly powerful finish that is akin to rolling tiny rocks around the mouth. This is also positively brilliant with the development potential to match. Drink 2037+. |

| BH 86 (6/2014): (from younger vines planted in Musigny where the resulting wine has been declassified). A ripe and expressive nose plays right on the edge of oxidation with its aromas of petrol, floral pear and peach. The round and easy to like middle weight flavors don't possess the distinction that I'm used to seeing or the depth. In sum, I found this to be disappointing given the terroir and generally excellent vintage. I should point out that I have not tasted this before so it's possible that I had a less than pristine bottle though everything appeared to be in appropriate condition. Drubj 2016+. |

| BH 92-94 (6/2021): A beautifully layered and quite spicy nose openly reveals its ripe but fresh aromas of white and yellow orchard fruit and include hints of the exotic such as mandarin orange and passion fruit. The sleek, intense and tautly muscular mineral-driven flavors possess outstanding density and an almost pungent minerality on the powerful, chiseled and beautifully long finish. The intensity really builds from the mid-palate to the highly refreshing finish. In short, this is classy but it's classy with attitude. Drink 2031+. |

| BH 95 (6/2024): A ripe yet distinctly cool nose combines notes of citrus confit, spice, Granny Smith apple, white peach and an all but invisible application of wood. The super-sleek but almost painfully intense larger-bodied flavors possess a mouthfeel that is akin to rolling rocks around the mouth on the bone-dry, youthfully austere and compact, indeed very tautly wound, finale that goes on and on. This is terrific and as good a vintage for this wine as I have seen since the 2015 when they began declaring it as Musigny Blanc again. It won't be easy to find but this is one to strongly consider. Drink 2034+. |
