WA 93 (11/2022): The 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jean continues to drink well from my cellar, exhibiting aromas of pear, confit citrus, toasted nuts, praline and smoke, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy palate that's underpinned by racy acids. Somewhere in between youth and maturity, I'd be inclined to wait a few years before broaching more bottles, though readers with colder cellars may still catch the wine in its impressive infancy.
BH 92 (6/2019): A gentle touch of wood sets off aromas of green fruit, citrus, petrol and a similar whiff of soft floral nuances. There is both good volume and richness to the middle weight flavors that also exude a subtle minerality on the focused, intense and impressively lengthy finish. This isn't quite as complex as the Verges but it's still excellent. (Drink starting 2024). |

WA 93 (1/2020): A fine follow-up to the terrific 2017—which continues to show brilliantly from my cellar—Niellon's 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jean offers up aromas of white currants, citrus oil and pear mingled with notions of toasted bread and nutmeg. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and succulent, with racy acids, fine depth and concentration. This is well worth seeking out.
BH 90 (6/2020): An odd nose is presently comprised by notes of lactic and reduction so I would definitely advise a quick aeration first. Otherwise there is good freshness to the succulent, round and plush flavors that, like several wines in the range, are not especially concentrated yet possess an attractive mouthfeel before concluding in a lingering finish that is surprisingly rustic as the Niellon CSJ is typically on the refined side. I would suggest giving this at least a few years first as the nose isn't presently what it should be. (Drink starting 2026). |
