WS 93 (3/2005): Powerful, opulent and densely packed with black cherry, leather, licorice and spice, this is classy and transmits its terroir. Its rich profile is supported by firm, ripe tannins and vibrant acidity. Be patient. Best from 2010 through 2020. 1,700 cases made.
BH 92 (1/2005): Medium ruby. Aromas of wild berries, game and a subtle note of smoke lead to rich, intense, moderately fat flavors that are wonderfully well-balanced largely because of the racy, indeed bright acidity. This has tightened up considerably since it was bottled with a dusty, sweet and precise finish that is strikingly long. In short, delicious yet entirely serious and a wine that should age gracefully for two decades, perhaps longer. Drink 2012+.
VM 92 (4/2005): Good medium red. Superripe, slightly liqueur-like aromas of crushed cherry, smoke, pepper and underbrush. Peppery, penetrating and youthfully tight, with a surprisingly restrained sweetness for 2002. Sharply defined, juicy flavors of raspberry, herbs and spices; conveys a distinct impression of soil character. The finish dusts the palate with white and green pepper and spices. Utterly singular wine. Brouin expressed the opinion that 2001 and 1998 here showcase terroir character, while 2002 and 1999 offer both terroir and fruit. The vines here average 45 years of age despite some recent replanting.
WA 90-92 (6/2004): The medium to full-bodied 2002 Clos des Lambrays sports a nose of freshly laid asphalt, spices, and blackberries. Rich, waxy, and firm, its character offers flavors reminiscent of blackberries, cassis, mocha, chocolate, tar, and licorice. Its firm yet ripe personality will repay patience. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2014. |

WS 95 (5/2008): A red of purity and suppleness. Reveals a dense core of cherry, spice and mineral aromas and flavors allied to a firm structure, while great energy propels this to a long, lingering aftertaste. A combination of power and finesse. Best from 2014 through 2030. 425 cases imported.
BH 94 (1/2008): A much more deeply pitched nose of dark berry fruit, spice, earth, a hint of animale and an overlay of obvious minerality complements perfectly the rich, full and sweet broad-scaled yet elegant flavors that are solidly structured and firm on the detailed and wonderfully intense finish. This powerful, long and serious vintage of Clos des Lambrays is built for the medium plus term, which is to say out to 20 years of improvement followed by another 20 of plateau. Drink: 2017+
VM 93+ (4/2008): Medium red. Riper, darker nose features blueberry, spices and a sexy earthy perfume. Supple and juicy, with excellent spicy lift to the blackberry, blueberry, game and mineral flavors. Sweeter and denser than the village example but more noteworthy for its insinuating soil tones than for sheer size-or is this simply in a shell today? The long, resounding, dry finish features very fine-grained tannins and lovely lift. This, too, seems to be shutting down in the bottle. But it should be long-lived.
WA 91-93 (4/2007): The 2005 Clos de Lambrays leads with hints of cedar and spruce resin (or is that actually ripe Pinot stems?), bitter-sweet florality, pungent spices, black tea, salt spray, iodine and Cote-Rotie-like smoked meats. Plum and cherry - with a strong dose of skins and pits -- almost come as an aromatic afterthought. A subtly bitter, tart edge follows the flowers, meat and minerals onto the palate and helps lend profile and pungent energy to the wine, which sticks tenaciously to the palate as if it were exactly the sort of resin suggested in its aroma. This is serious in a rather somber way, and the abundance of tannin and sheer density of this wine suggest one wait 6-8 years before peeking beneath another cork. But I strongly suggest it will make excellent old bones, so my score could easily mislead. (I find the peppery, spicy, highly satisfying 2004 very nearly as good today, not to mention more charming and a better bet for the short run.) The average age of vines is quite old, incidentally, but Brouin refuses to print “vieilles vignes" on the label because he insists (rightly) that these two unregulated words are grossly abused. |

The deeply pitched nose evidences obvious earth and floral influences on the mostly ripe red pinot fruit aromas that complement the rich, pure and detailed medium weight flavors that culminate in a dusty and mouth coating finish where the supporting tannins display a clear stem influence. This is an excellent wine though it may not be to everyone's taste due to the obvious stem character. Drink 2020+. |

An intensely floral and spicy nose that is wonderfully elegant and admirably pure speaks of red currant, blue berry, game, smoke and warm earth. The silky-textured, precise and mineral-inflected medium-bodied flavors possess copious extract that does a fine job of buffering the very firm tannins and allowing for perfect balance on the mouth coating and impressively persistent finish. A seductive and relatively accessible Clos des Lambrays that should be approachable with only a decade of cellar time yet last for 25 to 40 years. Drink 2021+. |

A highly expressive and very broad nose of superb aromatic complexity that includes earth, game, spice, red currant, plum, violets and a hint of the sauvage. The round and supple flavors possess outstanding detail and while the complexity doesn't quite match that of the exquisite nose, it's not far behind and this culminates in a beautifully balanced and harmonious finish that delivers striking persistence. I also had a chance to retaste the 2009 and it is bigger, richer and more powerful while the 2010 is much more of a wine of finesse and refinement. In a word, beautiful. Drink 2022+.

Dense, tactile and large-boned, but with its flesh somewhat suppressed today. Finishes saline, concentrated and thick, with substantial granular tannins. This offers a big step up in aromatic complexity with its ripe and expressive nose of red berry fruit liqueur, cassis, plum and violets. There is a very suave and seductive texture to the medium weight plus flavors that possess an abundance of mouth coating extract, all wrapped in a long, balanced and delicious finish where a touch of minerality adds lift. Drink 2023+.
WS 93 (2/2014): The aromas are dominated by floral, vegetal and spice notes, followed by a beam of pure cherry. Turns deeper and more complex as the finish unleashes fruit, sandalwood and mineral flavors. Excellent length. Best from 2016 through 2030. 125 cases imported.
VM 92 (3/2014): (100% vendange entier; 13.2% with a bit of chaptalization): Medium red. Highly complex nose combines wild dark berries, smoky herbs, brown spices, leather, rust and pepper. Suave, elegant and fine-grained; a lovely silky midweight with perfumed notes of iron, rust, olive, wild herbs, spices and pepper. Finishes with very good spicy length. This can be enjoyed now or cellared. Offers a Lambrays-typical blend of structure and finesse, not to mention terrific aromatic complexity. Incidentally, although Brouin described 2012 as one of his best vintages of the last 20 years, he maintained that the 2011 is more transparent to its site.
WA 89 (11/2014): Quite pale in color for a grand cru, the Clos des Lambrays 2011 has a very spicy bouquet with touches of wild mint and damp woodland scents coming through with aeration. The palate is light and slightly fleshy: fresh strawberry and red cherry leading to a light, peppery finish. It does lacks some substance at the beginning, although aeration sees it gaining more intensity while retaining its delineation and focus. |

BH 94 (1/2015): (produced from two large parcels of differing vine age - one that is approximately two-thirds of the blend and is now 50+ years of age and a second, smaller group of vines that is approximately 25+ years of age.) A markedly floral nose exhibits a broad array of spice and red and dark berry fruit aromas that include plum, cassis and earth. There is excellent detail and plenty of punch to the mineral-inflected flavors that are shaped by ultra-refined tannins on the balanced and gorgeously persistent finish that is firm and serious but not really especially austere. This is seriously good with a lovely sense of harmony plus the perfect balance suggests that this will mature over a very long time. Drink 2027+.
VM 93 (3/2015): (100% vendange entier; the village fruit was destemmed in 2012): Superripe aromas of red fruits, peony, mocha and balsamic spices. Plush, full and seamless, offering a pliant texture and terrific depth to the flavors of red fruits, dried spices, coffee and flowers. A tad warm on the back end but the dusty tannins melt into the wine's fruit. Less minerally than usual for this grand cru but there's no denying its richness and depth. This will need time to burn off some of its baby fat. Stephen Tanzer.
WA 90 (10/2015): Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru has a classically lined, slightly herbaceous bouquet, perhaps even ferrous though well defined with dusky black fruit emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannins, open-knit, a little herbaceous again but balanced, though I would prefer more flesh to come through on the bony finish. For me, it is not in the same class as Clos de Tart, but it is always intriguing to see how this wine develops and surprises in bottle. |

WS 94 (5/2016): Spicy and aromatic, featuring sandalwood, green olive, cedar and nutmeg notes, framing cherry and currant flavors. Crisp, taut and balanced, with fine tannins adding support on the finish. Still pretty raw, but has excellent potential. Best from 2019 through 2035. 100 cases imported.
VM 94 (3/2016): Medium-deep red. Complex, high-pitched perfume melds blackberry, cherry, wild herbs, black pepper, underbrush and dried flowers. Classic Clos des Lambrays in its combination of red and black fruits, dried flowers, minerals, spices, licorice and earth and its pungent inner-mouth energy. This wine actually reminded me of a 1978! Finishes with firm, noble tannins and terrific piquant length. This is actually easier to taste today than the village wine but should evolve very slowly. Stephen Tanzer.
WA 93 (9/2016): Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru is a divisive wine, not one for those seeking layer upon layer of fruit. It is more mature in appearance than its peers, perhaps missing the fruit intensity one would anticipate from a grand cru of this stature. There is something a little "dusty attic" here although that ebbs away with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly leafy entry, gentle and elegant, full of personality. It is missing the weight and volume that a more benevolent vintage would have lent and it does not quite possess the structure or substance to suggest long-term. Yet, it remains a well-crafted and to put it prosaically, is absolutely delicious.
BH 92-94 (1/2015): (produced from two large parcels of differing vine age - one that is approximately two-thirds of the blend and is now 50+ years of age and a second, smaller group of vines that is approximately 25+ years of age.) Here too there is gentle wood setting off a similar if more complex nose that displays more prominent floral and spice scents. There is very good volume to the utterly delicious medium weight and wonderfully vibrant flavors that possess really fine delineation before culminating in a mineral-inflected, saline and focused finish. I very much admire the sleek mouth feel as well as the impeccable balance. Lovely juice that is moderately structured and a bit less youthfully austere than usual. Drink 2025+. |

WA 93-95 (12/2015): The 2014 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru is matured in 50% new oak and is 100% whole bunch fruit. It is blessed with a winsome bouquet. As usual, there is something very natural, unimposing and refined on the nose: blackberry and briary, a hint of graphite, a subtle leafiness maybe, and yet delineated and very pure. The palate is lively and energetic with crisp tannin, black rather than red fruit, linear and very classic in style with what you might call a "cool" marine-influenced finish that has fine salinity. What a great Clos des Lambrays that will put a smile on the face of those that adore refined Burgundy.
VM 92-94 (1/2016): (Taupenot makes less than a barrel of wine annually from a tiny parcel planted in 1975 at the bottom of the Clos des Lambrays): Slightly hazy medium red. A deep earthy perfume complements aromas of raspberry, spices and dried flowers. A bit imploded but surprisingly fresh and vibrant on the palate, with flavors of raspberry and flowers tweaked by a pungent blood orange note. The very long, slowly mounting finish features slightly tight tannins, a subtle saline quality and considerable finesse."This is never a powerful style, but more about length and charm," noted Taupenot. Still, this beauty will need at least seven or eight years of bottle aging.
BH 91-94 (1/2016): (produced from two large parcels of differing vine age - one that is approximately two-thirds of the blend and is now 50+ years of age and a second, smaller group of vines that is approximately 25+ years of age; made with 100% whole clusters.) A notably spicy, fresh, cool and floral nose displays mostly red berry fruit scents that are trimmed in discreet wood notes. There is excellent cut and definition to the nicely rich and attractively textured flavors that culminate in a presently austere finale though I doubt that austerity will persist. This is a relatively fine and forward vintage for Clos des Lambrays and one that should be approachable after only 7 to 8 years of bottle age. Drink 2026+. |

WS 96 (5/2018): Aromatic, offering hints of lavender, menthol and orange peel, but on the palate this becomes an immutable block, with a kernel of cherry, black currant, licorice and mineral flavors locked within. The tannins have the upper hand now, but this should develop well. Best from 2024 through 2047. 100 cases imported.
BH 94 (1/2018): (produced from two large parcels of differing vine age - one that is approximately two-thirds of the blend and is now 50+ years of age and a second, smaller group of vines that is approximately 25+ years of age; made with 100% whole cluster.) Here too the nose is quite ripe yet very fresh with its layered array of spicy and markedly floral-inflected black cherry and plum scents that are trimmed in both discreet wood and menthol nuances. There is impressive size, weight and power to the more mineral-driven and refined medium-bodied flavors that are shaped by a distinctly firm tannic spine on the wonderfully persistent and mildly austere finale. This is first-rate and one serious wine in 2015 and thus be prepared to allow it at least 10 to 12 years first. Drink 2027+. |

BH 92-95 (1/2023): An intensely floral also freely reveals aromas of rose petal, violet, lavender, spiced plum and a whiff of newly turned earth. The sleek and precise middleweight flavors also possess a caressing yet quite punchy palate feel while displaying outstanding length on the focused, moderately austere and built-to-age finale. This is also really very good and a wine that should easily repay 12 to 15 years of keeping.
VM 96-98 (1/2023): The 2021 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru is tasted from separate cuvées and as a final blend. Containing around 80% whole bunches and 60% new oak, it has a beautifully-defined bouquet with dark berry fruit, bay leaf and a touch of white pepper that unfurls in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins, raspberry and red plum, sage and white pepper, leading to a very harmonious finish with a hint of underlying citrus fruit. Heavenly. Neal Martin. |

BH 90-92 (1/2023): An overtly floral-suffused nose speaks of red cherry, raspberry and a hint of herbal tea. The supple, caressing and succulent medium-bodied flavors possess a lovely sense of underlying tension on the lightly stony, focused and lingering finale.
VM 91-93 (1/2023): The 2021 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Loups 1er Cru contains half Premier Crus (La Riotte and Clos Sorbé) and the other half from younger vines in Clos des Lambrays planted in 2000 that is likely to enter the Grant Vin next year. Including 50% whole bunches, it has an attractive dark berry fruit and subtle briny scents on the nose. Good intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins, a mixture of red and black fruit with a very precise finish enhanced by the stem addition. This is a much more serious wine than the Village Cru. | BH 90-92 (6/2022): A whiff of petrol can be found on the ripe aromas of white orchard fruit, especially white peach, citrus confit and a vaguely honeyed character. The succulent, round and delicious medium-bodied flavors exude a refreshing salinity on the clean and dry finale where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This should be approachable young but also be capable of rewarding 6 to 8 years of aging. Drink 2026+. |
