WA 95 (10/2024): The 2021 Chardonnay Volpert Vineyard has a soft, detailed perfume of peach, nectarine and lemon verbena with accents of hazelnut cream and crème brûlée. The light-bodied palate is ethereal and precise, offering expressive savory and citrus flavors. It’s balanced by linear acidity and has a long, silky finish.
VM 95 (1/2024): The 2021 Chardonnay Frei Road Vineyard is an explosive, heady wine. It is also a terrific example of how much the Ferren style has shifted away from the outright opulence of the first years. Tangerine peel, passionfruit, white flowers and mint soar from the glass. A hint of reduction lingers on the steely finish. All this needs is time. Antonio Galloni. |

JD 97 (7/2025): The yellow-hued 2022 Chardonnay Frei Road Vineyard has a bit of flinty lift along with notes of vanilla, lime oils, crushed stones, and an appealing hint petrol. A distinctive white with a unique character, it has Riesling-like intensity, with dry extract and supple ripeness, as well as incredible focus and power. Drink 2025-2040. Audrey Frick.
VM 96 (3/2025): The 2022 Chardonnay Frei Road Vineyard boasts exceptional textural density and palate presence. Apricot, ripe pear, tangerine peel, chamomile and a kiss of French oak all build in the glass, filling out the layers effortlessly. Readers will find an expansive, generous Chardonnay that hits all the right notes. (Drink between 2026-2032) . Antonio Galloni.
WA 95 (8/2025): The 2022 Chardonnay Frei Road Vineyard has alluring scents of quince paste, peach, marshmallow, toast and brown sugar. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, flooding the senses with layers of lime, almond and matchstick. It has a silky texture, vibrant, shimmery acidity and a very long, dynamic finish. |

JD 98 (7/2025): Coming from a cooler and later ripening site, the 2022 Chardonnay Zephyr Farm Vineyard has such a sense of place with its coastal and vibrant feel. It has a savory touch that I love, with a fantastic freshness, and the palate is bright and focused, with a great, compact feel. And while it has the electricity I come to expect from this site, there’s just a touch more rounded opulence to even things out, so it isn’t austere, finishing with notes of delicate oak spice. WA 94 (8/2025): The 2022 Chardonnay Zephyr Vineyard is a rare new addition to the Ferren portfolio. It comes from Mt Eden and Old Wente selection vines that are around 20 years old, located between the towns of Freestone and Sebastopol. On the nose, a well of apple and peach is accented by nuances of elderflower, vanilla, meringue and roasted almonds. The light-bodied palate is bright and flinty with latent fruit at this early stage. It combines a soft, ethereal texture with vibrant acidity, and it has a long, dynamic finish. Give it 2-3 years in the cellar. |
